I'll give you an objective opinion, short and sweet, KDE 2.0 is flat out
superior to GNOME as a desktop environment (from a user's perspective). I
honestly would like to say otherwise, because GNOME is the direct offspring
of the FSF, whose philosophy I admire and support, but that is the simple
truth.

Unfortunately, neither desktop yet has a decent office suite. KDE does
come with an excellent email client that supports mulitple email accounts,
filtering, etc., a very good newsreader, and an excellent browser--all with
a unified look and feel. Very fast, with good stability. Once GNOME
becomes equipped with stable versions of Evolution and Nautilus, I may
change my mind, though it will still be missing a good browser.

I encountered the same problem when I installed Apache a few days ago... and I
did the same: look through httpd.conf and find nothing.

The solution was very simple: The access rights. That's what the error message
means.

All folders along the path from root (/) to your index.html file must be set to
755 in order that everybody can read in them. Check also the access rights of
the files.

Hope it helps.

Subject: No sound card...
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 03:18:49 +0100

Hi everybody,

I just bought a SoundBlaster128 to put in my Linux-box. In order to let it make
some noise, I dig deep in the ALSA docs and I ended up in modifying my
/etc/modules.conf. I changed the ALSA section to looks like:

===========================================================
alias char-major-14 es1370
options es1370 joystick=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1370
options snd-card-ens1370 snd_index=0 snd_id=card0

(Followed by some garbage.)
===========================================================

Then, as said in the docs:

# depmod -a
# rcalsasound restart

All I succeeded to obtain so far is a frustrating error message:

===========================================================
Starting sound driver: snd-card-ens1370
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd-card-end1370.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy

Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect modules parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd-card-end1370.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd-card-end1370.o failed

/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/snd-card-end1370.o: insmod snd-card-end1370 failed
                                                                        done
===========================================================

What did I do wrong? I spent the whole day on this for no result... :'-(

See ya,

Well, that is what the original poster asked. I assumed that by
"running" she meant that it had an entry in the process table, and
pstree shows that. If she meant something that (one of) the
Program-Counter(s) was pointing at, that would have been a different
question, I think.

> Not sure
> how to catch everythingm running or not.

If you think she meant every executable thing in the machine, that would
be tough. A subset would be available on Red Hat - like installations by
running rpm -qa. Another approach might be to do a find for all files
with an x-permission-bit set.

Fair enough. Waiting, that is. It's just for I like to know what is going
on and why and since as root a simple rm can do much more damage if run
"right" ...

Minor side note .. do not remove libdb-2.1.3 and symbolic links to it as
glibc-2.2.x does not provide one anymore and you cannot just plug in a
self compiled version if you do not want to break all applications that
require the shared libdb.

Cheers,
Juergen

Yeah ya know I do like pan... except too many times it just sits there
with like 5 tasks to do... I've let it sit there for an hour once and
it didn't complete it's tasks. I kill it and restart it and it
completes the tasks right away. It's like when the connection times
out or something it just gives up but doesn't inform the user. Wierd.

So I now have given up on pan and am trying to make the move to
xemacs/gnus. Although I also want to try slrn... I heard that is
pretty good. We'll see.

Thanks for your input!

Beware the i840 chipset, it has a broken IO-APIC (with it disabled
responsiveness is badly hurt). Most anything else runs nicely. Lately I
have considered the ServerWorks chipsets the choice if you need 64-bit
PCI; otherwise, there are a lot of good boards out there (BX chipset has
been quite solid for a long time). FYI, a valid reason for SMP is to
maintain responsiveness under load; this can be a problem for web
servers, and SMP does help there. Often a concern is hard drive access
speed, since multiple persons may be reading web pages at nearly the
same time. In which case you should definitely consider SCSI, especially
ultra-160.

If you haven't already tried, go to rpmfind.net and do a search on libc.

HP7200e is external
CD burner which uses linux sg driver for scsi emulation. I use following
modules for this
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod parport

bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod pcd

when I try to scanbus I get the following error.

Forgot to mention, I also have a K6-III/450 (@500) and they are really sweet
proc's.

Subject: Log File Security and Rotation

I'm trying to set up secure logging. What I want to do is set up my
logs with the append only attribute via chattr. When I rotate the logs
I want to set change them to immutable with chattr. How have people
handled logfile rotation. Is there something currently available that
documents how to do this? I'm thinking that somewhere in my
logrotations scripts I will have to run a pre and postrotate scripts to
perform the chattr command. Can anyone provide examples of how
they've accomplished this?

Also how does msyslogd compare to syslog-ng?

Something can only be owned by a username on the system. User names are
8 letters or fewer. I suspect there is no user on your system called
andrew.chan.
Note that the file ownership is NOT by name, but by user number. Ie, if
you are user number 174, then
chown 174 filename
will change it to the owner who's number is 174.
