When I did this to run WABI (it required an 8-bit display and my other
apps wanted 16), I found I also had to create another "startx" that
selected a different window manager because kwm refused to run twice.
Your mileage may vary.

I'm not quite sure if I got your point.
It's obvious that one does not want to crete a backup by hardlink.
Rahter one wants to be "foo" and "foo.bak" to be to *completely*
different files that just *happen* to be in the same directory (if so)
and of the same size. Now when M$'s "new" linking-system goes through
the file-hirarchy, it is my understanding that it replaces "foo.bak"
with a sym-link to "foo".
This does not make any sense, as I (the user) might want to keep a (one,
tow, or maybe a zillion) copy(ies) of this particular file and do not
want the system to decide wheather this is supposed to be a link or not.
Your whole scenario dos not change anything about that.

Wait.... hold that last response.
I put the MAILTO thing in the crontab file, rather than in the "crontab"
file. this might be working after all, but it's a mission-critical box,
so i'll have to go slowly in testing.... more to follow

The line "TX packets:3 errors:178 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:534"
means that most of the data you're transmitting is lost due to errors.
TCP/IP isn't robust when the error rate isn't small, and won't work
at all with an error rate like the above. If your hardware is known
good (eg, works in another op sys) then you might have the wrong
driver. If it isn't known good, try a different ethernet card or a
different 10BT RJ45 cable or a different cablemodem. :)

Sorry for the confusion. I was talking in Microsoft centric terms.
AFAIK, if you use operating systems from Redmond the boot sector in the
MBR will always be a chainloader that loads the boot sector from the
active partition.

Good point. But it is useless in this case if the drive was not partitionned
with MSDOS fdisk. If partitionned with Linux fdisk the MBR boot sector will be
blank (or at least not in a state to boot anything).
Hope this is clear now,

Okay, that's not the issue. The issue is that when I set a file to
belong to a group and then assign users to that group, those users are
not allowed to make modifications to those files even if the
permissions were set to 777. Something doesn't seem to be working
correctly and I cannot figure out what. root seems to be the only user
that can do anything, even if the owner and group are set correctly.

I have PM 4.0, but haven't really been able to play with it. It claims
my partition table is corrupted. Yet both MS fdisk and Linux fdisk are
able to work with it. Any suggestions as to how to make my partition
table acceptable to PM?
Also, I've been curious about how PM can resize an ext2 partition, i.e.,
shrink it. Since ext2fs does not necessarily stuff files in data blocks
near the beginning of the partition (as I understand it, it looks for a
data-block-group(s) which have enough contiguous data blocks to store
the file without fragmentation). But that could mean that cylinders
toward the end of the partition are being used, even on a lightly
filled partition. Does PM relocate used data blocks toward the
beginning of the partition? I don't know of a Linux utility that does.

Except that if the sectors that are on the HD fail it would only fail on
one /COPY/ in the non-hardlinked version where it would corrupt /ALL/ copies
of the hardlinked version. Therefore, the MS automagic it less robust and
causes problems because of that.
You /DID/ think of that, right? I thought not.

Here in Spain, if you have just finished your career and ask for a
salary starting at 7M pesetas ($45K) you will probably end in a mental
institution.
I finished my career in telco's less than a year ago, and what I've been

Hello folks,
I have an IBM Thinkpad 760LD and somewhat successfully installed
Mandrake 6.1 (I wanted to do Redhat 6.1 but it would not recognize my
video card and subsequently bombed before the installation even began).
Anyway Mandrake 6.1 takes a SVGA 680x400 Trident Cyber9320 8-bit fine.
It fills out the screen, and I'm learning to live with it. Windows 3.11
uses an IBM supplied Trident Cyber9320 16-bit at 800x 600 fine. Does
anyone know of another video driver that I can at least 8-bit that would
go at 800x600 resolution on a Linux system for this Thinkpad?
Also soundblaster works almost fine for the soundcard except it
interfers with the IRQ of cua1 (com2). When I switch to ESS which also
works except no wav, at least my modem works. Does anyone know how to
tweek the soundblaster settings so I can both get sound and use com port
cua1?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Best regards,
Terrio Echavez
