Well, I still have a hard time believing that they do not support
autoppp-- ie use NOT chat script at all. Just immediately start ppp
(using the PAP with no script in kppp) But as you do not seem to want to
try that, Iwill just comment that the expoect send pair always sends out
a carriage return at the end of the send sequence. Thus, send your 0,
expect whatever minicom shows you to expect(eg MTU) and then send and
empty string. That empty string will have a carriage return tacked on to
the end of it.
But again, have you tried to set up kppp with NO script at all? Just the
"use pap" button clicked?
Or have you tried following the step by step guide
www.theory.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
(and note, follow it step by step. Do not skip things.)

Thank you to all those response especially Dave for all the
helpful info. For everyone info, I did run lilo after modify lilo.conf
(please note that I got an "L" upon attemping reboot). I did
also verify that my BIOS can boot from a secondary IDE drive (with
DOS). However, I have to add:
disk = /dev/hdc
bios = 0x80
as Dave recommended to get my secondary IDE to boot linux.
Thanks again to all who response,

Hello,
at least /home/usename has to be chmod 750 (drwxr-x---) in order for other
user (same group) to be able
to cd into and read files, if those files allow it, of course.
For more info read:
man chmod
man chown
man chgrp
Good luck

mpg123 -s mpg_filename |sox -t .raw -s -w -c 2 - -t .wav output.wav
will I think do it. If all that comes out is static, also place the
option -x before the -s in the above line (this should not be necessary)
(Note that I have not tried this so cannot guarentee it will work, but
the combination of mpg123 and sox will work with the right options.)

The man page does not mention any -w option. for mpg123. Is this an

Okay, for some reason, when I reompiled with all the sound stuff in
modules, I got rid of the unresolved symbols. We'll just have to
wait until later to see whether it works right or not. PPP is a
higher priority.
I found, in README.linux included with ppp-2.4.0 that the 2.3 and
later kernels handle ppp differently than previous kernels
did(through /dev/ppp). Silly me, I guess I shoulda read the docs
first. I created the device file and now I can communicate with the
modem. Unfortunately, it is VERY slow in communicating and my
attempts to connect to my ISP all end up as follows:
$ ppp-on
$ Serial connection established
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS2
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
The connect script I am using reads as follows:
pppd asyncmap 0 -detach modem crtscts defaultroute user wilkinsc \
/dev/ttyS2 115200 \
connect 'chat -v "" ATZ^M OK ATDT9,7134900445 TIMEOUT 120 CONNECT' &
During my troubleshooting, I run tail -f /var/log/messages and I
notice that the 'OK' after sending ATZ^M is never received. I assume
chat times out waiting for it and continues to run it's script. The
'CONNECT' IS received after the dial string is sent, but the result
is **always** as above.
Please help as I am tired of having to reboot into Windoze to access
the 'net.
Regards,
ninewands

Well, I have complained to his ISP each time one of these spams comes
up. And he spams them to comp.mail.sendmail as well, so I complain to
his ISP about those, too. His isp does not seem to take this spamming
seriously. They send me a polite form letter in both English and French
saying they will take care of it. But they do not. So I started sending
my complaints to the next level above his ISP. They may have to cut off
the spammers ISP from the Internet to get their attention.

Well, that is good news that at least one person has this working.
I've already done everything that you suggest below. Still I
can't get this to play stereo from the CD. Could you let me know
what version of ALSA you're running? Here's a couple ways you
might find out:
1. [propmpt #1336] strings /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/snd.o | grep -i ALSA
alsa
alsa_sound_exit
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.10 emulation code)
Type 10: ALSA emulation
2. [prompt #1335] rpm -qa | grep alsa
alsa-lib-0.5.10-1mdk
alsa-utils-0.5.10-1mdk
alsa-driver-0.5.10-1mdk
Do you think you could also let me know what your ALSA mixer
settings are? Here's how to do this:
amixer gcontents
Many big thanks in advance!
Cheers....
