Because for years MS software (the OS's in particular) have been the
best thing available. IMO, they still are, though there is some
argument that it's changing. Linux isn't ready for the masses. It
doesn't have nearly the variety/quality of software, it isn't nearly
as easy to use.

Regardless, when MS took over the market, they weren't competing with
linux.

Hi ,

i am a newby in Linux. I just installed Suse Linux 7.0 professional and want
to install an ICQ version for Linux.
I found several ICQ-Clones in the internet, but since i don't have any
experience, i am not able to install one of them.
Can anybody tell me a good version for ICQ, which should have nearly the
same appearance and the same functions like the windows version. And could
anybody also give me Installsupport for that ?

thanx in advance!

Got it. In case anyone is interested, it's in /etc/wvdial.conf

You have to set interupt manualy in conf.modules file. This problem accure
when you have the same card in the computer. You always have to set them
manualy, but it will be enaugh if will set manualy only one card.

Or just use an i (case Insensitive) for sed.

$ echo -e "abc\naBc"
abc
aBc
$ echo -e "abc\naBc" | sed 's/b/x/';
axc
aBc
$ echo -e "abc\naBc" | sed 's/b/x/i';
axc
axc
$

However, maybe even nicer would be to get rid of everything after
and including the first space. This is what my previous awk "script"
did, and here is the same for sed.

$ echo "hello world" | sed 's/ .*//'
hello
$

Re: PLIP
I think you are suffering from changes made in the way parallel ports are
handled in the 6.2 release. You might check bugzilla for printer problems
-I submitted one when 6.2 first came out and the details in the response
there are accurate, but the fix is to add a line to /etc/conf.modules.
Seems in the rush to make parallel I/O independent of devices, someone
forgot to put in a filter to tie the lowest level to the PC hardware or
forgot what name to use.

I think the line goes: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

You also need to take note that they have Microsofted the port naming - the
first port found is lp0, second lp1 etc. It is no longer tied to I/O
address!

Thanks for the posting. In my case, I downloaded the .iso images from trusted
sources - in the case of a Redhat 6.2 installation .iso, from Redhat's own ftp
site. I have sent a few emails to the respective parties to shed a little light
on this mystery - maybe these md5sum differences are because of the reasons you
outlined, maybe packages are being updated, etc. More experimenting required!

Cheers,

Daniel

It will improve it in the sense that your total virtual
memory is the sum of real memory plus swap- while you would
be much better off with an extra 128 MB of real memory, this
at leasrt will let you function, albeit painfully at times.

When this happened to me I learned that anything in /etc/ppp/options (in my
case, your paths may vary) will override command line parameters. My options

static
one for my local network, I saw exactly the same error you see. Rename or

... but perhaps it's in order to note that the printer's performance
as a Samba printer for Windows clients has zilch do to with the Linux

it will cat to the printer exactly the binary image which was produced

bah. common-lisp is often compiled to machine code (franz' allegro
and cmucl) and does not suffer from the buffer overflow problem. all
you need is memory management performed by the language infrastructure
instead of doing it manually a la C.

But they were competing with other things: CP/M and TRSDOS
being the most significant. Actually, at the time the word
processors, databases and such for TRSDOS were pretty darn
good- Microsoft's crapola wasn't near as good for quite a
few years. Spreadsheets too- was it Multilink??- anyway, it
had features that were far more advanced than Lotus for a
long time. None of it mattered. Back in 1981-83 I was a
Customer Support Rep at a very profitable Tandy Computer
Center. When IBM's PC came out, we went to the floor-
literally in the case of the manager who passed out from
stress one day after both sales and profits had been
bleeding vigorously away for several months..

The various CP/M vendors and Tandy made their own dumb
mistakes, but don't think for a moment that their expulsion
from the market was entirely their own stupidity-
Microsoft's extreme business practices helped them along
then just as they do now.

Don't ever underestimate them. They take no prisoners, give
no quarter and remain a threat to Linux no matter how good
it gets. The one advantage Linux has is the same advantage
it has on the development side: it isn't a dumb corporate
entity driven by greed and controlled by moron middle
managers who probably never even understood what Msoft was
doing to them until it was way too late- if even then.

I don't think you lose that capability by virtue of going to the newer
release, but you will probably have to do some aditional configuration
because of the changes in the way the parallel ports are handled in 6.2.
Check bugzilla for printer problems - which is where this first showed up.
A line needs to be added to /etc/conf.modules to enable the PC parallel
ports to be found. I believe it is: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
Note that the port naming has been Microsofted - the first port found is
lp0, second lp1 etc. The port names are not tied to addresses!

Once you get this taken care of, you should be able to get the zip drive
set up as under 5.2. Also, 6.2 is the current release and has this problem
fixed. And if you want to experiment, the beta for the upcoming release,
pinstripe, is at Red Hat's ftp site.

Subject: Re: Need help with dump/restore on Linux - Getting broken pipe.

I believe you can get the "Broken pipe" warning when the listener
on a pipe closes the pipe before the talker is finished talking.
I'd guess that restore is closing the pipe after it recovers the
file you want, but before the end of the archive is read.

Anyone want to confirm this?

Cheers....
