Subject: PPP needs 2 tries for session

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? I give the command:
"ifup ppp0", the phone rings, a connection is apparently established
momentarily, then PPP hangs up, dials again, and the second time
I get a continuous connection until I terminate it with: "ifdown ppp0".
Here's an example from /var/log/messages:

Thanks, Bob, for the latex suggestion. I'm taking a look at it but I
think I may follow Brian's approach-- I don't know why I didn't
think of doing plain text! Probably because when I did the previous
postcards I had to figure out how to print in "landscape" mode and
enscript did the job...

So thanks for the reply, Brian. (though I may end up using my
current preferred scripting language instead... you know, the other
one that starts with P. OK, so python rules, there, I said it.)

IMHO yes.

And it is supported, at least I have tested it under SuSE Linux
(IIRC)...

It used to work nicely on my box about one year ago.

Now it is giving me very dark images. Does
anyone know what the problem is? I am still
using the same system; red hat 6.0.

Hi!

I have problems using my internal iomega ZIP-Drive
(250MB, ATAPI)

When mounting a just newly (DOS-)formatted Zip-Disk in my ZIP-drive
the contents of the previosly mounted Zip-Disk shows up, and I have no
chance,
to get something on the Disk ....
... in other words: Linux remembers the content of the first Zip-Disk
ever mounted on
the box ... and does not refresh :-(((

my entry in /etc/fstab:

/dev/hdb4 /zip-drive vfat

Anyone got similar problem anfd has a solution??

There is also ~/.xsession, which is used instead of .xinitrc if you
are logging in with xdm (i guess).

I have symlinked it to ~/.xinitrc

I guess this is very difficult to handle in X because of the various IDs.

But try "http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/" for a fake x server

Subject: Backup tools / old bru ?
Date: 6 Mar 2000 03:35 PST

I've been using bru for backups, but after updating libraries it stopped
working (segfault). I see that my copy is dated from the original Redhat
5.1 install, and hasn't been updated. Seems I've been caught in the
closed-source trap! Without sources I can't recompile.

Is bru really commercial/closed source? Does anyone have experience
keeping an old version running? I tried installing old libraries
in parallel, and had to boot from a rescue disk to recover.

How about recommendations for a replacement? Am I stuck with tar
and dump?

With the sudo command you can give certain users permission to run certain
commands, both specified in the /etc/sudoers file. This is much more save than
use the setuid bit for the shutdown program, and in my opinion more elegant
than using ctrl+alt+delete. (Y can assign button to it in your window manager
if you want).

When I compile and install some packages myself, rpm does not know about them,
so when I delete the older versions (with rpm), rpm complains about missing
depencies. Is there a way to let rpm know about the new packages, for
instance, make the rpm database be rebuild?

Thanks,

Martijn
