sorry for that newbie question:

Does there exist a list of all possible return codes used by tar with the
corresponding verbose description?

If I use tar from a shell script I'd like to react to teh various return
codes like 512 etc...

Funny, I have the opposite experience. My Linux-Mandrake 8.0 is faster
than
my RedHat 7.1 installation (on the average).

This kind of problem occurs when  the DNS does not answer, you should have the
same problem with Telnet. Check your DNS or /etc/resolv.conf. I got this
behavior with AIX, I suppose that it's the same with Linux.

Show us your /etc/printcap file and a log of your failed print attempt
(both the command you use, and the error msg that's returned).

You are assuming an X environment here.

vim can handle several windows:
do
vim file1
then
:new file2
and you get two windows.
Switching is done with ^w and up- or down-arrow.

A simple script to find next available gid?  We use LDAP browser, so we
must go to an Xterm and do a less on /etc/groups to find the next
available GID.  Shurely, a simple little script could do this for me!

   You're probably refering to the DVD ioctls, required for DVD key
negociation and decryption. UDF support isn't mandatory for DVD
playback, it is only required if you want to mount the disc.

Do this:
to ensure tape is rewound:

mt -f /dev/ht0 rewind

to ensure the tape is online, etc:

mt -f /dev/ht0 status

now look at the contents of the tape:

tar tf /dev/ht0

(if that doesn't work, insert your "-b 64" again).
then you can see the correct syntax to use for the restore filenames.

Someone suggested using the 'restore' command, but I don't think that
will work: 'restore' can only be used to restore backups peformed with
'dump' (not 'tar').

There is a Smart Media->PCMCIA adapter made by several companies. I just
purchased one made by Microtech from www.d-store.com for friends for use
with their C-2040 Olympus. My Linux box recognizes it as another drive just
as it did the Compact Flash Card.

Mjx2001, are you on crack!?  First of all, YES, Q3A DOES support dual
procs.  Check out this DOCUMENTED command-line option:
Flag   Description
----   ------------
r_smp  Setting this to "1" enables dual CPU support for the Quake3
       rendering/graphics engine. Note that your graphics card
       drivers and operating system must support smp.

Also, do a search for 'quake3 dual' or 'quake3 smp' on Deja.com.

Secondly, here are the MINIMUM system requirements for Q3A, as
published on lokigames.com:
                      Pentium 233 MHZ with 8 MB video card*, or
Processor/Video       Pentium II 266 MHz with 4 MB video card*, or
                      AMD K6-350 MHZ with 4 MB video card*

Okay, lets see, I have two PII 333MHz and a 16MB Voodoo3 3000.
I MORE than meet the minimum system requirements.
You best be doing some research before spreading FALSE information.

You still need to -b 64 when restoring 

e.g. 1 to compare tape with disk

tar --compare -b 64 --verbose --verbose --totals --file /dev/ht0

e.g. 2 to restore 

tar xvv -b 64 -f /dev/ht0 /home

You can't do anything with an OnStream and tar unless the -b 64 is
specified.

Weird...

Can you ping the Linux box from NT?

How are your routing tables? With a subnet mask wider than the canonical
255.255.255.0 the hosts are indeed in the same subnet.

With any (fine) cd-burn program. Assuming you don't have any linux-distribution
installed yet (but Windows) you can use Nero, WinOncd, etc.
Just select something like 'burn image'

Okay, here is my printcap. The device is an Apple ImageWriter II. 9600
baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, hardware flow control.

herr... the NT machine does not have a video connected, so it's
quite difficult to say, tomorrow morning I will try to connect
a video to it and see what's happening, but since I can ping from
here to there (here=Linux, there=NT), I think that I will be able
