Right now your system considers your IDE CDRW to be an IDE CD-ROM. This
is why it works. The CD-burning software insists on talking to a SCSI
device, which is why you have to recompile the kernel (the things you do
at this point will deceive the OS into thinking that your IDE CDRW is
really a SCSI CDRW, and you'll be able to make disks).
Follow the directions on the CD-Writing HOWTO from start to finish.
After you do all that stuff, you can either regenerate the system map
(so that it also sees that CDRW as a scsi device) or you can hand-edit
the lilo.conf file. If you go to dejanews and search the
comp.os.linux.misc archives, you'll find a ton of articles covering this
stuff.
Don't worry too much about the module names, if you follow the
directions in the HOWTO exactly, this will all be taken care of.

I am not in charge of my news server. This is Usenet news, not e-mail.
Furthermore, it does not go into a mailbox on my machine.
Like other noise, it is best controlled at the source. Since it is
illegal to assassinate the spammers, their ISPs must keep them in
solitary by cutting off their Internet access. Responsable ISPs do this.

You can use the -S parameter to ipchains (presuming I've understood your
problem and that you use ipchains and masquerading, of course). At any time
before or after you set up the masquerading rules, you can set the
masquerading timeouts for TCP sessions, for TCPFIN packets, and for UDP
packets. The values are specified in seconds.
To set the TCP timeout to one hour, the TCPFIN timeout to 15 minutes and the
UDP timeout to 30 minutes, use the command
ipchains -M -S 3600 900 1800
or, alternatively
ipchains --masquerading --set 3600 900 1800
I hope this'll help.

If you want to use a graphical interface for configuring a script that
will run a nice firewall, check out this site.
http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/
The author also has a book out called "Linux Firewalls" by New Riders.
Worth looking at if you want to set up a simple Linux box firewall
solution.
Hope that helps.

Subject: Any way to get a Linux system to do PPPOE?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martin McCormick)
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 21:30:04 GMT
I will be putting a Linux box on a line connected to a DSL
protocol converter and our ISP, who is SWBell.net uses PPPOE to
authenticate systems going on line. Of course there is a PPPOE client
for Windows, but do I have any chance of getting the Linux box to log
in?
I know other possibilities are buying a device such as the
Ugate or similar router/switches and running a private network on my
side, but the PPPOE solution would be the simplest and most direct.
The only thing that is not an option is to do anything that
causes a Linux system to rely on a Windows system for network
access.

Strange error. Go to www.proftpd.net (ProFTPD's home page) and search
through the documentation. Have a look at the FAQ, in case this is not
such an unusual error. Anyway, as far as I remember there are a couple of
ProFTPD-related mailing lists where you can get support directly from the

You can just change the type of hda4 from 05 to 0F (F), and the type

however should be done before hda6 is formatted.

Subject: cdrecord hangs my linux box when burning some audio tracks
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 22:50:33 GMT
Hi,
I try to burn some CDR with audio tracks with the cdrecord utility. The
problem I have is that with some wav files my whole machine blocks blocks
after writing the file on the cd. I must do a power off/on to reboot my
machine. My machine is a portable Dell latitude Cpi running with RedHat
7.0 updated and Helix Gnome. I use an HP 9210 external SCSI writer
connected to a adaptec PCMCIA SlimSCSI card.
I use xcdroast, gtoaster to blank CDRW and to burn CDR with data. I have
tried to burn audio tracks with gtoaster (in fact mp3 file transformed
into wav file with the mpg123 utility). Some of the wav files can be burn
completly without problem, but with some, the machine hangs. I tried to
convert mp3 files to wav with the plugin of xmms and then sometimes, the
wav file can be burned.
Here is the log file with the start of cardmgr following a cdrecord
-scanbus and then the command I use to burn audio track. This was a
example witch has worked. The following I tried bloks my machine. The last
line of cdrecord was then Track 01: 32 of 32 MB written (fifo 100%). I
just don't see the padding message. I just thinking that cdrecord block
when padding the last sector.
Have somebody the last symptom and how to resolv that ?
Cheers

Try Firestarter
http://firestarter.sourceforge.net
so easy to set up and use it should be illegal ;-)

Well, I've heard that building many programs from source allows them
to run faster, as they are optimized specifically for your computer's
architecture, rather than being "dumbed down" so as to be compatible
with anything from a 386 up.
Although the primary reason that I want to build X from source is cuz
it's fun to mess around with the guts of computers. :-)

Actually, I've never used Redhat in my life. I used to use Slackware
7.0, and now I use an "LFS" system. (See
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org if you're curious...)
Thanks for the help.
