Yes, this is unfortunate. Especially for those of us who like to=20
segregate our work onto different desktops by task. But SO is so far=20
the best option for those us us who like to work via a task based=20

to a task or topic, and then everything is launched from there=20
(related documents, sreadsheets, etc...). I really haven't found=20
another desktop environment that allows this to be done efficiently.

Ok, maybe this is not a good way to do it but I do not know any better
way.
Go to all directories in /etc/ld.so.conf and do a "fuser" to all files
in each directory.
At least you will see what library-files are being used.
Hope this help.

My system is an i486 Linux RH6.0 Kernel 2.2.9, and will like to
install the rhide (Borland TC++3.1 IDE clone) package.

The .rpm archives all arround the mirrors I've found are 0bytes,
and only the source form are available.

I've placed and configured the gdb 4.18-10 sources with ./configure
also placed the GDB_SRC environment pointing to them, the
TV2_ZIP to the turbovision sources, and the linux sources are
in place. (I've recompiled the kernel a lot of times).

I can't understand the error generated, that seems that are looking
for the gpr2mak executable but still haven't been compiled.

I've searched the web and the usenet archives without luck. Please
could someone point me to the right way?

I've done some thoughts myself along the same lines, just haven't gotten to the
point were I'm going to do it yet..
a couple of things (ok, so the list grew to more than a couple):
-probably the biggestest challenge is going to be having clean/reliable power
(especially if the system tries booting up while your starting your car or
something?)
-as far as transfering new files to it, what I would do if toss a cheap
($20ish) network car in the system, you can mount a jack for it under one of
the seats or something, so it's hidden yet easily accesable, and then ftp new
mp3s to your car (don't have to worry much about security because no-one will
have access to the machine being in your trunk. or even a network that uses
radiofrequency, or even IR (if you park in a garage)
-on mine I also want to be able to hotsync my palm to it.. :)
-they make car stereo headunits with a small color lcd tvscreen built into
them, if you use a video-output card (and want to spend $1,000 for the
headunit) you can actually have a real display for it.. ...mabie someday, but
that's ALOT of money, unless you get an internet connection from your car as
well..
  - possibly use an ir-port with a remote control to control it (I've seen
other people have hacked telephone keypads too...) or mabie something like the
original gravis gamepad :)
-SHOCK PROTECT THE HARDDRIVE ("Opps, hit a pothole....hey, why'd the music
stop, and what's that grinding noise coming from the computer?")
-why do you need to disable the login?
-probably want to glue the audio-out cable so it doesn't pop-out.. and
protect it so if somehow it gets banged it doesn't break (headphone style jacks
suck, I've gone through a few portable cd players just because the headphone
jack stopped working)
-one you've got the computer in the car you can make it do other stuff as
well.. security system for example.. you could even make it so you "log-in
to your car" to start the engine, and if you hook-up a keyless entry system as
well you could totally do without keys (although I'd want to keep the option of
using keys as well). use some temperature sensors at let it control your heat
and a/c in the car, and so forth.. might as well do more than just play music
since the computer will already be there.. of course if your going to do
stuff that requires the computer to be on all the time your going to want to
make it draw as little power as possible with powersaving and so-forth, and
also probably get a bigger, or second car battery, and mabie even buy a
"battery tender" type charger (not a tricklecharger that'll boil your battery
dry) so you don't run out of juice.. :)

let me know what you do for your power supply needs, this is probably the
biggest thing stopping me from doing this myself.. I already have the spare
processor/motherboard/soundcard/hard drive/etc....
hope my wacky ideas helped, and good luck..

Hi,

I have updated kernel, compile and everything. But I don't know how to make
Linux to boot into the new kernel. I have compiled a new kernel in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage. I have a /boot partition. Do I just
copy the bzImage into /boot? Every time I boot my system, Redhat still says
2.2.12-20. But I have updated to 2.2.14. Please help. TIA.

Actually, I've had no problems at all using my own ATAPI Iomega Zip drive on my
Linux box. You just need to have IDE/ATAPI floppy support compiled into the
kernel or running as a module, and to mount it, use "mount -t vfat /dev/hdx4
/mnt", where x is the drive specification and /mnt is the directory you'd like
to mount it at. For some reason, Zip disks ALWAYS use the fourth partition.
Go figure.

Hope this helps...

If I'm not mistaken, the Toshiba laptop line uses Lucent software modems.
There are drivers for this; check at http://www.linmodems.org. I got the
one that came on my Compaq Presario 1200-XL106 working without too much
difficulty.

KMail is an email client similar in nature to what you are used to in
the windows world. It will allow you to have several accounts with
different servers. You can set up differnet inboxes for eact account to
keep the mail separate and different folders for your read mail. I hope
this is of somehelp.

There are several others that will do this also.

Redhat 6.0 and Mandrake 6.1 are the versions I had tested.
I had to play around with a number of settings before the
generic scsi was enabled and ATAPI support was enabled
and I see the the cd drive with cdrecord. If the kernels
were built with generic scsi, then I would have expected
cdrecord to see the drives out of the box.
