it's worlds easier to use gcc to cross-compile from linux for win32
than the other way around. for one, builds are incredibly slow under
nt. using linux on an identical machine is nearly an order of
magnitude faster. i suspect that the cygwin32/win32/posix layer is
not all that lightweight when it comes to file handling. number
crunching is about the same between linux and winnt.

On the contrary my friend.

Check out Explore2fs Windows 95 file browser like interface for Linux
parititions , write enable is "experimental" but seems to work alright

(Mike: quoted material goes at the TOP of a followup.)

What does Lose3.1 mean by "32-bit disk access"? Does it mean "use a
protected mode driver", or "enable a few IDE options, including the use of
32-bit I/O between chipset and CPU"? Linux doesn't use nasty limited
unsafe real mode code for anything except loading the kernel and maybe
shutting down the machine, so its disk access is always "32-bit" in the
sense of being done under protected mode. (In the Lose3.1 era,
"32-bit" was often a synonym for "protected mode code".)

As for the IDE options, it's actually chipset dependent. Some motherboard
chipsets will allow you to independently set drive parameters on master
and slave drives, some won't. My Thinkpad 380D has its hard drive on
/dev/hda and its CD-ROM on /dev/hdb --the master/slave config you
mentioned. Using hdparm in Linux, I can enable multisector reads, 32-bit
I/O support, and unmasking interrupts on /dev/hda. I can't do any of
those things for the CD-ROM drive, but the hard disk goes a bit faster
once I've enabled all those things. (3.8 M/s instead of 3.2... whoopee.)
The chipset is an Intel PIIX chipset; YMMV. HTH,

Yes - many of the M$ support sites use that crap .asp style of web

entirely blank in Netscape. I guess this is why they "have" to bundle

Well, have you tried actually going to a search engine and searching for
the keywords "parallel ZIP Linux"? I'll give you a hint:
  http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/ZIP-Drive.html
Remember ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that part of the URL and go there when you
have questions. It will probably get you what you want faster than
posting to Usenet. If you still have questions after reading the

You have enabled the 'burst page'. This makes sense if you have lots of
users sending lots of stuff to the printer -- it helps people find their
own printouts. In this case, it is telling you that this printout is
for the user justierd (you), it was from stdin (you did '<some command>
| lpr'), from a machine called 'localhost'. And you submitted it on
Tuesday, June 13 at 36 minutes after noon.

Fire up printtool as root, select the print queue and select Edit.
Select 'Suppress Headers' and select OK. Select 'restart lpd' on the
lpd menu (probably not needed, but can't hurt). Then exit from
printtool.

You should be all set.

I was hoping that maybe someone could tell me what that error means?
I'm
using a DELL Inspiron 7500 laptop computer with Redhat Linux v6.2.
Like I mentioned earlier, it did work for me a couple times before.
Same system - I don't know what changed. Perhaps it's a
hardware problem?

I've used about 4 CDRs and two different CDRWs and get the same results.

Thanks for your input.

A Matrox would be nice if all the features work under Linux. Even better
is the fact that ATI has commited to bringing their entire software and
driver package to Linux so their All in Wonder 128 should work nicely. as
for a Processor grab the AMD Duron 500 that should be as fast as a P3 500
for less money. As for the XFree86 4.0 not many cards support that yet so
wait a bit on that it'll have more cards within a few months although I
believe Nvidia and 3Dfx drivers already for xf4.

Subject: Getting sound to work on Suse linux 6.3
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 19:30:04 GMT

I have a Gateway g6-400pentium II that I have installed Suse linux 6.3 on.
It's on my secondary hard disk(6.4gig), and coexists beside win98 & win2k.
I have it set up so that I have to use a floppy disk to boot linux. Well
my problem is that I have no sound. I contacted Suse, but their technician
was just to "technical". He said something about using a text editor to
edit a module or something, and I have no idea how to do anything other
than point and click. I really want to learn how to use linux, but I need
someone to just take time to teach me the basics. I don't know how to do
anything text oriented! I know my system has either a Ensoniq audioPCI 64,
(which Suse needs module es1371) or a Ensoniq Audio PCI,(in which Suse
needs module es1371), but I don't have a clue as to how to get to, and
edit this module, or modules. Can you please help? I appreciate anything
you can do.

Subject: fax under Linux
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 14:26:30 -0500

I just had an occasion to try to send a fax. I have a US Robotics
56 K modem which is supposed to be a fax modem. But I couldn't
get the program fax to work. The problem may have been that
I don't have a level 2 fax modem, but it is only about three or
four years old. Can anyone direct me to appropriate documentation?
Also which fax program is the most convenient to use?

P.S. I also tried to send the fax using the MS Fax under
Windows without success.

Where on the first disk did you put /boot? Also do you have
a link from /boot in the root file system (mounted from
/dev/hdb2 to that location? The lilo boot loader has to
be able to find the kernel. When you run /sbin/lilo, it
uses the information in /etc/lilo.conf to determine the absolute
disk address of the kernel and the associated files. It seems
plausible that you haven't set things up properly so that can
be done.

You had to repost the entire ad, eh?

ObOnTopicality:

Pointy-haired Boss (PHB): There's a typo in the user manual. The support
number actually goes to a phone sex line.

PHB: The number of complaints is down.

Customer (after calling the wrong number): Ummm, are you sure that'll work?
Operator: No complaints so far.
