Does "bindkey -e" fix it?

It could be that zsh thinks you want vi mode. The environment
variables EDITOR and/or VISUAL affect this (described in zshzle(1)).
There's a zsh users' mailing list, available from

By default, RedHat powered off the computer on the shutdown command. I
upgraded to 2.2.15 kernel, and now the shutdown doesn't end up in the
power-off. I've enabled APMS, but it didn't help. Is there a kernel
option I need to turn on or something else?

other ways of going about this?

NFS is evil. You have many NFS exploits on the net. This may be cleared
up with NFS v3, but not currently.
Lookup RSYNC.

It hasn't been too long since this was posted - but I'm having a hard time
following your explanation as to which hard-drive is which... and if you are
swapping hard-drives, removing them... or what's going on above.
It would be helpful if you could explain in terms of primary IDE
master/slave... hda, hdb when you talk about the problem.
Maybe I'm just lazy... but I get confused reading your explanation.
---
In other words... leave the drives in a certain configuration (the one you
hope to get working?)... and explain where everything is and what
does/doesn't work. Granted... Old HD, New HD are valid identifiers... but
it's hard to follow where you actually 'put' them.
---
My first guess is that you end up trying to boot DOS/Win 98 from your second
hard-drive... which won't normally work without some deliberate magic to
virtually 'swap' the drive identitites in lilo.conf.

Make sure you run "xdm" as root (see man page). It will run forever
unless you kill it ro reboot. I will give you your graphical
login when running exceed in single window mode. It's
how I access my Linux (RH 6.1) box at home. No options on
xdm should be necessary.
You may also need to check some files under /etc/X11.
One of the directories under their will have I believe
a file called "Xaccess". It may need to be modified to
allow your PC w/Exeed access to your Linux box.

The hwclock --adjust switch is trying to solve a different problem, i.e.
correcting drift in the hardware clock [assuming an accurate system clock].
I was dealing with a system clock that was drifting badly, so in my case the
hardware clock was much more accurate than the system clock.

Thanks for the reply. :)
I'm still in trouble, however. When I boot with the CDROM and then type:
vmlinuz root=/dev/sdbX, where X was either 1,5,6 or 8 (all of the non-swap
partitions on the drive). I get a scary sounding message from the kernel
that says "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:11 (or 15 or 16
or 18, depending on the partition)".
Do you have any idea what this is all about?

The egcs stream of gcc development has been superceded by gcc-2.95.
Development of the egcs line has now stopped. This measn the gcc-2.95
is both more up-to-date wrt the ANSI standards as well as being the
one which is most likely to meet the standard a t some time in the
future.

Ignored.
[1]+ Bus error netscape -mail
fsneppe@minas-tirith:~ >
Using netscape navigator and surfing does not cause any problems but as
soon as I start Messenger, Netscape downloads a couple of mails from my
ISPs POP server and then exits.
After searching the web i stumbled upon a lot of info on how there are
incompatibilities between netscape and libc.so.5, but i have been using
netscape on suse 6.3 for a fairly long time without any problems, so I
don't suspect any incompatibilities. Also, what the hell is libc.so.5 ?
I started KDE as root and immediately got a "A new version of KDE has
been installed. Would you like me to create the shortcuts ?" message.
However I was able to startup netscape messenger, configure it to
download mail from a POP3 server etc.
I proceeded to delete the ~/.netscape directory (took a backup copy
first) of my normal user account.
This actually appeared to work : I had to reconfigure a couple of things
but was able to read and send mail without any problems. Netscape still
gave a libc.so.5 error upon startup though...
I wanted to investigate this a little further tonight but guess what. I
wasn't able to get into Netscape Messenger again. It opens Messenger,
downloads a couple of messages from my ISP and then crashes. It also
appears to crash when I am changing preferences in Navigator.
I removed and reinstalled Netscape but this didn't help.
Then I renamed ~/nsmail/Inbox and hooray, now everything *appears* to be
working again. Don't know what will happen tomorrow though...
Does anyone have the slightest idea what is going on here ? Could this
be corruption in a mailbox file or something ? Also, how do I fix this
libc.so.5 error message ? Any help would be greatly appreciated because
I don't intend to keep on deleting netscape related files in my home
folder every 24 hours...
strace just gives a segmentation fault - if anyone wants the last lines
of the trace I can post them...
this message is crossposted to alt.netscape and comp.os.linux.misc. if
you flame me for this, please realize i may not be able to read your

If your /dev/sdb is still functional as you left it, then you can
rerun LILO using its /etc/lilo.conf. Boot linux (you can use /dev/sda
or get a disk version from http://www.toms.net/rb), mount your root
partition on /dev/sdb by typing:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt (replacing /dev/sdb1 with your root partition)
and then type
cd /mnt
chroot /mnt /sbin/lilo
which should restore it.

I don't know exactly, it sounds still difficult to do all that in
Linux. But I would think that most the lacking things can be done
using a virtual WinPC running under vmware on top of Linux. This would
give you a smoother switch also. I think vmware costs about thirty
dollars.
If not, wait a year and have a look again. Perhaps all that stuff is
Linux-ready then. Anyone expects enormous advances in end user
applications in the next months. If one estimates that in two years 20
percent of desktop users might choose Linux as primary OS, this can't
be all wrong.
Good luck,

when communicating with my Linux host, I get enormus collision rate even
with only 2 hosts active.
I believe im having a problem with parity but I don't have any idea how
or where to research this and see if changing the parity will solve my
problem. I would normally expect to get about 800Kbps between 2 local
machines through an idle hub when both are 10bT, but im getting about
100-200 at best. Between other hosts on my hub, (a windows box and a
Ultra 1), I have reasonable communications at rates approaching 800kbps.
Can anyone please give me some advice on what to do ???
