I have tried synch-ing SO 5.1 with my Palm and SO keeps crashing on
me. Either it locks up on me completely or my box starts thrashing.
After a crash, when I try to start it up again, my disk will access
for about 10 seconds then stop and I get -- nothing! Any suggestions
on how to fix the latter problem? Any suggestions on a better place
to post this message?

I'm running RH6.1 on a PII 233 with 64 MB RAM and 128 MB swap.

Thanks! I ask because I also tried building XFree86 4.0 from source
using gcc-2.95.2 and that 03/20 snapshot and *both* hang during the
"makedepend" in the "xterm" directory. Did you have to do anything
special to get it to build? I got XFree86 3.3.6 to build ok, but not
4.0.

Works fine for me. I suspect your problem might be .rhosts /

Try "rpm -e --nodeps filename-1.1.rpm" where filename-1.1.rpm is the
correct rpm name that you need to erase. I have found on occasion that
this will correct the problem. Not sure why. Also you may want to see if
any config files were left by the old version of the program. I know
linuxconf doesn't remove all of it's files when you do an rpm -e on
it.

I had the same problem with files.tar.gz being incorrectly converted
into files.tar.tar by Netscape. First I discovered that if I renamed
them back to files.tar.gz again and moved them to my Linux box (by
whatever means - usually dos formatted floppies) and ran tar -xzvf on
them, everything worked as it was supposed to.

But then I discovered an even easier way: in Netscape if you click on a
link while holding down shift-key it doesn't convert it, it just saves
it as it finds it. Much less work.

HELLO:All you really need to do is mount the windows drive and then open
it in kde and drag the files into linux. To do this read my howto on
directly mounting drives in linux. Its just a matter of putting an entry in
the etc/fstab file and making a directory for it.For windows its going to
be type vfat. Another way is to call up linuxconf which is a graphical
tool you can use to mount the drive. The entry may be something
like /dev/hda1 /mnt/cdrive vfat user,noauto.nosuid,rw, 0 0 and then
bring up a typing console and type mkdir /mnt/cdrive (hit enter)You will
then find it under /etc/mnt/cdrive This is just a basic entry. My site also
tells how to make a desktop icon for it too.
My site is http://www.geocities.com/wrattz/linux1.html

another problem exist when I attempt to re-compile rxvt with pixmap

packages in tar.gz format )

3) my ld.so.conf have good path for libXpm

could you help me to find xpm-devel in tar.gz format ?

Maybe an easier way if you are familiar with DOS, is to make up a system
disk with DOS, a cdrom driver, MSCDEX.EXE, and suitable autoexec.bat and
config.sys files , so you can select the CDROM drive in DOS; then cd to
"dosutils" directory on the cd and run "autoboot.bat". You'll probably need
HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE on the floppy as well.

The system.map question has been answered so I will address the error

MAGIC_SYSRQ=no or you can recompile to turn that option off.

I have my RH5.1 setup with only two partitions, (root and swap). I now
understand that this is not a great thing to do. I should have created
different partitions for the likes of /tmp, /usr, /home, etc etc. My
questions are:

Should I change the partitions at this point? Pros? Cons?

Does Corel's painless installation create more than two partitions? Do
you get to choose how Corel's installation partitions the drives?

And finally, speaking of Corel, I was told that, "Corel makes a great
workstation, but a poor server platform." Any thoughts on this? I was
toying with the idea of switching to Corel Deluxe, from RH5.1. Is Corel
Deluxe for the power user?

Thanks.

On RedHat 6.1, I am short of memory, and want to minimize the background

Is it just a matter of removing the S85httpd link in /etc/rc5.d? Is that
the accepted way, or is there a better way? Maybe renaming it to xS85httpd?

Thanks for any advice. If there other standard processes that aren't
totally necessary, please mention them. I obviously want cron and stuff

Unless you are having problems with what you have setup or are upgrading
to a newer version or flavor, yes add some of the other partitions such
as /home /usr /var to name a few.

But if you are thinking of reinstalling just to add the partitions the
choice is yours.
