My tape drive (HP Colorado 8G) works fine under everything since
2.1.128 under SCSI emulation -- although taper had some other errors,
which other software wasn't bothered by. Using IDE-tape directly
also worked, but was plagued by some strange bugs (SMP-linked) the last
time I tried it.

The error you received (about the device not being supported) is what
you should see under 2.0.x kernels, so far as I know.

What's the best tool to use to copy a partition?

I have my Linux root partition set up as a 1G primary, and I have a 1G
extended partition on another drive that I want to use for a backup of
the root partition. Norton Ghost will copy the primary into the
extended, but doesn't want to copy the extended back to the primary.
Besides, I'd rather use a native tool. tia. -steve

yep, that's it. bash uses the 'export VARIBLE=whatever' syntax, so you
should change the line in /etc/profile to

export BLENDERDIR=/dnload/blenderLinux_i386_libc6-dynamic_1.5

(I would recommend to move the blender files to somewhere under
/usr/local, e.g /usr/local/blender and set the variable to point there
instead, since /usr/local is the 'standard' location for applications
intalled manually (at least that's the way debian recommends))

and to run blender, run it with /usr/local/blender/blender, or add the
blender dir to your PATH variable, or make a symlink to blender from a
directory already in your path (e.g /us/local/bin or /usr/bin)

I have just installed the S-Plus clone R in my system (Redhat 5.1). It is
not quite as much a finished product as S-Plus (I am told) but is
regularly used in Stat Depts and people who know tell me it is good.

If you use emacs you may also want to install the emacs-R/S lisp interface
ESS (standing for Emacs Speaks Statistics). This allows you to run R
through emacs and this can be nice. Here is some info about R
that I got off a stat newsgroup. Get back to me if you want to know more.
Or one of the stat newsgroups would be a good source.

Hi.

OK, so I installed SuSE.

I have a question...

With Linux (more specifically SuSE Linux) is there anything similar to
the AIX function 'export EDITOR=vi' where the command line will respond
to 'vi' commands looking at a .history file?

I updated to the new 4.5 Netscape with libc6 (128 bits encription) and the
brit time is gone, it's back to displaying the time correctly like everything
else.

It seems much less buggy than 4.08 or 4.5 libc5

Neither of these is in the plugin files or timidity directories.

Around 1993 or so a guy named Andrew M. Schmid wrote a program called
"tapemaker" which will generate PostScript to produce tape inserts for
a variety of tape formats (cassette, QIC, etc.) and for CD jewel boxes.
The program reads a simple ASCII text file to decide what gets put on
the insert.

I've been using this for quite awhile now to make inserts for both
cassettes and the CD-Rs I burn.

Try doing a search on "tapemaker" through any of the various search
engines.

Actually it should be /dev/hdd4. Iomega formats them with multiple
partitions for compatibility with various OSs, but the one you want is the
fourth partition.

Hi all!

I have 2 box:

1) 486, RedHat 5.1, Kernel 2.0.36
2) K6-2, RedHat 5.2, Kernel 2.0.36

I have installed ssh 1.2.26 on both boxes. The 486 works fine:

#########################################
Feb 7 17:30:33 garfield sshd[742]: log: Connection from 127.0.0.1

Feb 7 17:30:42 garfield sshd[742]: log: Password authentication for

Feb 7 17:30:42 garfield sshd[742]: log: ROOT LOGIN as 'root' from

However, the K6-2 doesn't...

Feb 7 17:27:02 odie sshd[14637]: refused connect from 192.168.0.4
#########################################

I'm only using the default sshd config on both boxes. I've also
verified that "ListenAddress 0.0.0.0" are in both config files.

Any idea why it works on my 486, but not my K6-2? Is that coz of
different RedHat version? Or is it coz of different CPU?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a problem with my WIN95 PC and installing Linux.

There is a nice tool for resizing my old partions on my LINUX CD called
fips. But in order to do any ersizing, I need to sort all blocks on my
harddisk in front of the partition. Unfortunatly I have run Norton
Utilities3.0 to defrag my partition. This program optimized my partition by
moving all my files that are not used very often to the end of my disk. Now
I can't use fips. Unfortunatly I have no CD-Writer or ZIP drive and my
partition is 2.1GB large with 600MB free.
Having a seperate 400MB harddisk I would like to have the full 1GB for Linux
while keeping my original WIN95 partition.

Can anybody give me any hint of what I can do or tell me of a program that
can reshuffel my blocks?

Best regards,

Sebastian

Is it just me, or is everybody always talking about RedHat and SuSE,
and nobody ever seems to mention Debian? I'd recommend it to anybody
wanting to install Linux for the first time. It's the dist I used, and
so far, I haven't found a thing to complain about. Well, not quite. The
front end to their package installation isn't great, but if you skip
the front end and use the command line, it's excellent. (Command line is
"dpkg -i <package name>", which is about as easy as it gets!)

Debian includes a great selection of apps, a really easy-to-configure
X interface, and my absolute favourite window manager (again, why does
no one ever talk about this one?), icewm. And, for whatever it's worth,
Debian scatters its files in more or less the same places as RedHat,
and even comes with a utility for installing RedHat packages.

You are correct but as far as the general public is concerned the internet came
long after compuserve. Most of us had only access to compuserve or bbs. The internet
is very recent for the average citizen of this planet.

Compuserve sucked but this was all we had. It would cost me around $20-$30 an hour
