Look into using the Sudo package. sudo allows a user to run certain
commands as root, without knowing root's password. They'll need to
know their OWN password, but that's usually not too big off a problem.
;)
And of course, you can set it up however you'd like, allowing certain
users to use only one command is a simple task.
Good luck.

Using an image file doubles the expense on disk access.
The request has to go through additional layers in the kernel.

Hi,
I would like to add some commandline options to the httpd startup call
during boot. I searched all the startup scripts in init.d and finally
found a call to apache, which is a binary file.
Can't I modify the startup of httpd? Do I have to recompile and
reinstall apache just to add some options to the startup commandline? I
am using SuSE 6.3.
Thanks for any hints,

Hi,
I am running Red Hat Linux 6.1 and samba version 2.0.5a.
All the other machines in the network are running WinNT.
It is a common practise among us here to send each other
WinPopup messages (they do it by "net send"). Now I can
send message to other machines by "smbclient -M" but
whatever they send I can't see (no window pops up). I've
put message command = /bin/bash -c 'xmessage -file %s;
rm %s' & in my /etc/smb.conf still it doesn't work. What
is wrong, any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

Well, you may use cdda2wav (or something like this), cdparanoia and
bladeenc (I don't know whether I spelt them correctly). There is a wrapper
available (RipEnc). Search for them in

I have the same problem (and a Win background - with Corel Linux the old
Linuxers will have to get used to us ;-) ).
I found that a utility called realpath fails ("it segfaults"). I did a
search for "realpath" on deja and there are a few posts that propose
solutions.
Juergen Kreileder postet that the JDK from SUN needs a glibc-2.1 system
or better. You can download different versions of the JDK for glibc-2.0
and glibc-2.1 from Blackdown (http://www.blackdown.org/).
(I would have thought Corel Linux would come with the latest and
shiniest parts :-( )
Another suggestion (Johan Vromans) was to simply change the java script
(.java_wrapper I think) and fill in the filenames, eliminating the calls
to realpath .
I haven't tried any of these yet so I don't know if they work
(especially No 2 - it would save another 20M download).

In only know this for a redhat system, it that probably does not help
you. On redhat systems the mc and m4 files are found in the package
sendmail-cf and if this package is installed go to /usr/lib/sendmail-cf.
Of cours, if you get the sendmail source directly from sendmail.org
then the mc config files will be included with the sources.

This might be a bug in RH6.1, but I already had MAGIC_SYSRQ=no in my
init file. Solved the "problem" by commenting the three lines after
'#turn off sysrq' in rc.sysinit.

ISPs have ISDN (usually several PRIs), so that their modems at the their
end are in fact ISDN cards i.e. fully digital. Two 'analog' 56K modems
will not communicate at 56K: you need ISDN one end which supports analog
dial up for transmit at 56K and ISDN either end for full duplex @ 56k.
Connecting 2 computers locally is best done with ethernet or direct serial
cable connection: 2 computers far away from each other will only
communicate full duplex at 56K if both have ISDN. However, with
compression etc. 2 56K v90s should run at higher speeds than 33.6, if you
have all the latest drivers and firmware upgrade. They transmit at 33.6
but the actual throughput machine to machine should be higher.

Take a look at your kernel configuration. It must support IP forwarding. The
SuSE distribution offers a configuration line like
# runtime-configurable parameter: forward IP packets.
IP_FORWARD=yes
in /etc/rc.config. In order to announce the reachable destinations within
both
networks, you may probably want to enable dynamic routing (when supported
by all combuters in both networks) like RIP (routed) or OSPF (gated). This
should updated the routing tables of all computer in an appropriate way.

/var/log/messages file that reports:

I am unable to fing the char-major-108.
I don't know what it is
I don't know where to get it
I don't know how to install it if I had it.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you

I do not know whether this is what your looking for, but untarring a tar file
does not install anything in the sense you mean: a tar file is an archive of
files, and untarring just extracts the files from the archive (as winzip or
pkunzip on windows), usually creating a directory called as the tar file,
but without the .tar suffix.
At this point you should go in the directory that has been
created, and there will be most likely files called README or INSTALL, or
both. Read those (e.g.: "more README").
It is different from windows, I hope you will enjoy it!

Somewhat related, I'm trying to set up a firewall machine on an old
486, but first I have to get ppp going. RH6.1, kernel 2.2.12, all
the current updates installed, mouse on ttyS0, 3Com 57.6K V.90
modem (a real one, works great on my RH5.2 box) on ttyS1. setserial
says UART: 16750, port: 0x028f, IRQ: 3, minicom can talk to the
modem just fine, etc. BUT...
the basic connection gets made just fine, although I do get the
same modprobe:can't locate module char-major-108 report in
/var/log/messages, but things hang at the point where I should be
getting a (DHCP) IP number back from the server. My /etc/ppp/options
has
lock
defaultroute
noipdefault
modem
crtscts
lcp-max-terminate 60
kdebug 25
asyncmap 0
user "myserverloginname"
remotename *
As you see, kernel debug is turned on. I get as far as
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco pppd[963]: Serial connection established.
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco pppd[963]: Using interface ppp0
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco pppd[963]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_ioctl: set dbg flags to 190000
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_ioctl: set flags to 190000
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_tty_ioctl: set xasyncmap
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_tty_ioctl: set xmit asyncmap ffffffff
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_ioctl: set flags to 190000
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_ioctl: set mru to 5dc
Mar 24 03:34:14 poco kernel: ppp_tty_ioctl: set rcv asyncmap ffffffff
then nothing until the connection times out.
I think 2.2.x kernels support 16750 UARTs out of the box. The pppd
is 2.3.10.
I'm stuck. If someone can help, please do.
