If autoboot.bat method fails, and I am assuming that you downloaded Mandrake
here; it might be possible that the iso image you downloaded could be
corrupt. I've had similar problems with Redhat Linux 6.2 for the Alpha
having corrupted python scripts. So I bought a copy of the Install CD, and I
haven't encountered any of the earlier problems since :o)

You need to start the 'postgresql' service at boot time, or run
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql start
as root to start it manually.

Subject: How to make a useful backup of the /boot partition?
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 23:23:19 -0400

I have two SCSI hard drives, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Since I have
lots of space on each, the first partition on /dev/sda is /boot.
The first partition on /dev/sdb is /boot2, to which I have
copied all the files from /boot. Thus, in principle I could boot
from there if the /boot partition were trashed (and /dev/sda5,
which is /, is left intact).

But my /etc/lilo.conf reads:

boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
linear
timeout=50
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-0.1smp
 label=linux
 root=/dev/sda5
 read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-0.1
 label=linux-up
 root=/dev/sda5
 read-only

image=/boot2/vmlinuz-2.2.12-0.1smp
 label=linux2
 root=/dev/sda5
 read-only
image=/boot2/vmlinuz-2.2.12-0.1
 label=linux-up2
 root=/dev/sda5
 read-only

>From this, I infer that Lilo will try to get the map from /boot
instead of /boot2, and likewise for boot.b. I infer that I am
getting much less backup protection than I originally though
when I set this up. (Of course, I should also copy / over to the
other drive as well, but I begrudge the space. If it is crashed
that bad, I should buy a new drive right away and restore from
tape.)

Has anyone else tried to do anything along this line? Can Lilo
be instructed on an image basis which boot, map, and install to
use instead of globally? Is there any point to this? If the
/boot partition is messed up, perhaps I should just give it up
and use a boot floppy with a new hard drive. Any ideas?

Hmm... are you sure your card index is 10? The way bttv.c is written
very many people mistake by one (one of descriptions occupies 2 lines).
Try to use autodetect. I have 401 too and it autodetects perfectly
by stock RH 6.2 and all custom 2.2.16 kernels that I had built.

Hmm... If you are sure that your card is 10 (or use autodetect),
then make sure norm is set right. I saw what you describe trying
to capture NTSC signal while in PAL norm.

> Does ANYBODY have this beast working under Mandrake?

Mandrake is known to ship broken compilers sometimes (even pgcc!!).
It is highly unlikely, but try to find a friend with RH 6.2,
compile a kernel with modules and xawtv there, then try it.

If you're looking for a job where you can utilize your skills in Linux
or open source software, check out http://www.mojolin.com?usenet

Mojolin is FREE. For everyone. Period. Because of this, you will see a
greater number of the small, growing Linux companies posting their jobs
here. Yes, you will also see recruiters searching for the big firms.
My thought was, "Why penalize a company for trying to get me a job" ?
You can post resumes and open
positions if you're registered. You can search either without being
registered. I will be adding more features like email notification and
international job postings in the near future.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

thanks,

Is there an "export PATH" in there after the PATH=$PATH... statement?

You must log out and log back in for .bash_profile to be re-applied (this is
not the whole truth).

There is only one implementation of perl for all unix-like systems -
ActiveState
just deals with the quirks of Win32. Any version around 5.005_03 or above
should be fine.

The normal way to handle perl module installation is to first configure
the CPAN module. Just run 'perl -MCPAN -eshell' and the first time
it will prompt for config info or you can let it autoconfigure if you don't
have to deal with firewalls. Then you can run the same command anytime
and type 'install module' and it will pull the latest version from the
internet and install it for you. The 'r' command will tell you what
modules currently installed are out of date, and 'i /pattern/ will list
modules that match the pattern.

Install from CPAN if they are missing.

Yes, but you will probably want to use mod_perl with apache if your
server is busy enough that starting a copy of perl for each cgi run is
a problem. A dynamic-loadable module comes with RedHat that
may or may not work. In earlier releases people have had trouble
mixing the stock rpm installed programs with custom compiled
components. If you have any trouble with the distribution versions
you can always grab source for perl and apache and build them from
scratch. There is a mailing list for mod_perl if you need additional
help.

I honestly believe that most of the problems with the speed of Linux comes from
not having your HD optimised. I run RAID 0 striped and everything flys on just
a K6-III/450 with 128MB RAM. Look into hdparm.

No that's pretty much it, after unpacking the tar file cd to the
directory it created and './ns-install'. If you are using the RH rpm of
