There are a couple of possibilities.
a) IPX/SPX is not being correctly passed through the tunnel.
b) IP multicast (used by SLP, which in turn is used by NetWare 5.x) is
not being passed across the tunnel.
If multicast is the problem, you might be able to get around it by pointing
the NetWare client at a hard-coded IP address (NWHOSTS file or the equiv.
config file in Linux; my apologies but I haven't looked at the Linux NetWare
stuff in a couple of years).
Hope that help!

I have almost the exact same configuration you have. I am told by the
Linux tech who saved my butt that I needed to run Samba to provide the
Windows-to-Linux interface. You might start there.

I am able to connect to my ISP but the info from the modem port is not
reaching any of my browsers. I have tried Lynx, Arena network utilities like
pinging and others but there is no response, like all these programs are
looking at the etho port and not the modem port for the internet.

Maybe, but only in work situations. Linux is too secure for
home and informal, shared, noncommercial uses.
Under Win95, my kids just turn on the PC, wait until
Win95's user login dialog appears (my wife and I have
separate 'profiles'), hit the Escape key, then insert
Windows game CDs and away they go.
Until Linux becomes easy enough for the average 4-year-old
to use, don't kid yourself that consumer versions of
Windows (95 and 98) will be dying off any time soon - not
unless Mac and Be systems do the killing.
Actually, the Win95 login dialog represents a possibility
for Linux. If a stand alone machine is configured to boot
directly into X, provide a button in the GUI login dialog
for _shared_ use. A user would click on that button to
completely bypass entering login name and password and
would instead be logged in under a shared and perhaps
restricted ID. Just a thought - though that still doesn't
address CD automount/autorun.

This distribution apparently is aimed at allowing
choice of schedulers. You might have to compile your own
kernel at least once, but thereafter might be able to just
substitute modules.

I've just upgraded my XFree86 installation to v4.0, and now DPMS has stopped
working!
I had it set to switch to standby after 5 minutes, and turn the monitor 'off'
after 10, but now it won't work no matter what I try. I've even tried;
xset dpms force standby +dpms
xset dpms force standby
xset dpms force off
and nothing happens.
Considering I find myself called away from my computer for 'a few minutes'
and end up being away for multitudes of hours, I *NEED* DPMS if I ever intend
to pay my Hydro bill. {smile}
Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Subject: Linux Raw Print Server with HP722C for Win98 Client
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 00:33:49 GMT
What I am Trying To Accomplish:
Use my Linux Box with an HP722C Deskjet printer as a print server for my
Windows 98 clients.
Setup:
I have a Linux Box running 4.0 Slakware running kernel 2.2.6 with Samba
2.0.3 configured to run a "raw" printer share. I want to have the
Windows 98 client do all of the print formatting before sending it to
the Linux Box, which would then pass it to the HP Deskjet 722C without
modifying the print job. The smb.conf is as follows:
# Global parameters
log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
printcap name = etc/printcap
domain master = Yes
wins support = Yes
lock dir = /var/lock/samba
print command = lpr -b -P%p %s
[lp]
path = /tmp
print ok = Yes
print command = lpr -b P%p %s
and my printcap file looks like this:
# Generic printer:
lp:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd:sh:fx=flp
Problem:
The Linux Box passes the print job to the printer, and the job begins to
print. However, when it reaches the last line of the document, the
printer stops printing and the receive light on the printer continues to
blink as if it is still receiving information and the last page gets
"stuck" in the printer. If you press the on/off key the printer ejects
the last page, but it fails to print the last one or two lines of the
document. Likewise if you send another print job behind it, the printer
looses the last line (or two) of the document and never prints them, but
it ejects the last page and begins printing the new print job (which
subsequently gets stuck on the last page again).
I have tried every configuration in the lpr and printcap man pages. I
have also set the Windows 98 client machines to print directly to the
printer with no result. Any information would greatly be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Darrell

Ditto for me; I never forgave any of the distributions for dropping xview
(the "obsolete" Sun effort). It's light, reliable, functional, and simple
enough to suit my use across an Xterm at work as well as two desktops and
and a laptop at home. One of the desktops was a 486 with 12 MB RAM and 50
MB of swap, and yes, it swapped occasionally, but it was *not* in any way
a burden for me to use effectively. KDE (etc.) wouldn't even *load* on as
limited a system as that, much less run. It ain't for everybody, but it's
representative of a heckuva lot more choice and flexibility than anything
out of The Evil Empire, IMNSHO.

Subject: Re: Remote terminal

The Text-Terminal HOWTO has a quick install section that is quite
good.
The process you are looking for is started by getty. Make sure you
get the right package: I wasted endless amounts of time trying to do
what you're doing because I was using the wrong getty. I use the
getty provided by getty_ps-2_0_7j-8_i386.rpm. getty monitors the port
on your linux box to which the dos box is attached. It looks for
attempts to login through the port, and it controls the communications
parameters (line speed etc) and terminal type that will be used to
communicate with your dos box once an attempt is made. You start the
getty by using a line like the following in /etc/inittab
s1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 DT19200 vt102
Having a text terminal available can be quite useful: just the other
day, StarOffice locked up my main box's keyboard completely, so my
machine had effectively crashed. I logged in as root through my
terminal (a 386 running minicom over an old linux distro) and
terminated StarOffice with extreme prejudice. Everything went back to
normal on the main box right away.

Not *strictly* true. Lilo can boot NT, but only if NT's C: drive is a
FAT filesystem, not NTFS. If the NTFS option was chosen for NT's C:
drive, then you need to use NT's boot loader.

Subject: Newly installed RH6.1 - no network
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 00:23:53 GMT
I installed RH6.1 this evening (this is my first glimpse of Linux by the
way), and now I am trying to configure my network connection. I have a pci
10baset card (with realtech? chip according to windows) but i have no idea
how to make the thing work. I have tried to ping other machines on the
network, but get an error something like 'network is unreachable'. Can't
even ping my own ip, but I think that is because I haven't actually set it
yet (although i thought i'd typed it in somewhere).
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't say it did anything at compile time Paul.
I was offering an additional related bit of info.
If someone posts on usenet to get a compiler
option, then I figure they can use the help. :->
