If it's cron, then just locate the responsible script and delete it/edit
it.
You should check roots crontab and /etc/cron.monthly/

I use Loadlin for the same reason. I have a multi-boot windows menu
which allows me to select either DOS, Windows or Linux during the boot
process (you can also boot to multiple versions of Linux if you are into
that sort of thing). It currently defaults to Linux after five seconds,
but this is easily modifiable.

There is a very nice loadlin manual written by Hans Lermen
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) which describes the use of DOS batch files
as well as windows start menus under config.sys. I would be happy to
forward it, if you are unable to find it (it is included on my SuSE
CDs).

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,
I just recently bought a modem that was advertised to be a Zoomtelephonics
Hayes Optima 56K business external modem;however, I can't tell if it is the
old Hayes company or if it is the "new" Zommtelephonics modem.

Here are my ATI7 and ATI9 commands

ATI7
   OPTIMA 56K, Model 5362US/HK, Version 7.00
   Copyright 1998 Hayes Corporation

ATI9
  (1.00HAY532\\MODEM\\Hayes OPTIMA 56K, 5362US/HK 6A)

ATI4 gives checksums I believe
  a125843FA848D70EF0810700

  bC60004000

  r102111115111200C0

  r30001111FF7000000

QUESTIONS:
a). Is this the old Hayes OPtima 56k business external modem D/F/V
or the new Zoom one? The box did have a sticker saying Y2K compliant
so I assume this was just manufactured recently.

b). If Hayes or Zoom(hayes), is this the latest and greatest
       version #/update?

c). When doing an "ATZ" or "ATDTtelephone#" the modem does two clicks
through the speaker. Is this happening with anybody else's
56K Optima? If the voice/data button is pushed, I also get the
clicks too. Is this present on the old Hayes or the new Zoom/Hayes?
Any s/w patches to fix it?

TIA.

Couple o' options.

a) If it's a single file (say, a .tar.gz archive), you can use
'split', which you likely already have. You can do something like

   split -b1380k foo.tar.gz foo.tgz.

and get filenames like foo.tgz.aa, foo.tgz.ab, etc, no one of which
would exceed 1380k (which should be enough even if you've got an
ext2 filesystem w/ reserved blocks on the floppy, with some bad
   sectors marked. It's probably conservative.)

b) tar, with -M for multi-volume.

I have a user who is unable to use "/bin/mail" on RedHat 6.0; it was
working fine until recently, when she opened her mail with "elm" once.
Since that time, when she tries to use mail, she gets a segmentation fault.
elm, mutt and pine open the mail spool normally. /bin/mail from root
also seg faults.

/bin/mail is part of mailx-8.1.1-8.
Under gdb, I get:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I'm out of ideas. Anyone know what's going on here? There's plenty of

The power supply theory is interesting - never thought of that. The computer
is allready stuffed with tape drive, CDRom, Zip drive etc - I'll look into
that.

However, as a test, I took the new IDE disk (/dev/hdc) home this weekend and
tried to run fdisk and mke2fs on it on my own PC (running Slackware 7) which
has much less hardware on it. Got the same errors when running mke2fs on it
there - so I have to assume that the brand new unused drive is toast...? And
that it's just a coincidence that this new drive was broken at the same time
as I found out about the problems with the other, older drives (/dev/sda and
/dev/hda)....?

Or am I doing something wrong setting up the disk?

Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 17:08:47 -0400

I've been trying to install the Linux 2.3.99-pre3 so that I can use a
USB wheel mouse. The installation seemed okay. Make menuconfig went
beautifully. Make dep presented no problems. Make bzImage, likewise no
problems. Make modules, make modules_install, both great. The kernel
is /vmlinuz, lilo is in /sbin and /etc/lilo.conf agrees with that. I
copied the bzImage into /vmlinuz. I reran lilo.

It wouldn't boot. The message is :

ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq + 3) is a 16550a
request_module[block-major-3]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device "342" or 03:42
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:42

Additionally items such as initrd still reference the old 2.12-20 kernel
which was installed by RedHat 6.1

Is this problem to do with it being on a RedHat 6.1 version of Linux? Or
should I be looking at something else?

I have that same video card under redhat 6.1... try using the SVGA server...
i am able to get 32 bit color at 1024x768 with my card, so it is definitly
supported... try using Xconfigurator.. that is probably the easiest way to
reconfigure your card without actually editing the XF86Config file.

Isn't this a misunderstanding? I've seen strong recommendations
to use gcc 2.7.2.3 (which dates from _before_ the egcs/gcc
divergence)
for building the kernel. But egcs? I would assume that any
warnings associated with gcc-2.95* would apply a fortiori to
egcs, which was sort of a "pre" version of 2.95.

I have my Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT with an active matrix LCD for
sale. The CPU is a Pentium running at 120mhz, it has the CD-ROM
attachment and the Floppy Disk attachment. The condition is fair because
of a small crack near one of the hinges (I think this a common problem)
and there are a couple of stickers on the case (a CRYSTAL METHOD and a
SWITCH BLADE SYMPHONY). I still have the original manuals as I'm the
original owner. Also included is a PC-Card FaxModem rated at 56k Flex. I
will not erase the HD which has MS OFFICE 97 PRO, MS MONEY 99 and more!
You will be responsible to delete those Apps. I will include a very nice
laptop bag which the Satellite Pro fits very well in and an external mouse
(when you don't want to use the trackpoint) PRICE $520
E-mail me for more info or if you wish to buy the laptop at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanx

it sounds like you compiled devfs into your kernel - recompilewithout it changes the
behaviour of bootup quite abit

This is presently a thorn up my backside.

I would love to see a good analog of X for audio. Esound is supposed
to be an audio server, but I have not yet had the opertunity to try it
out. Better would be to incorporate audio into X. I think there
would be some measure of convenience having both video and audio in
the same libs and header files. It would go a long way towards making
multimedia application development easier.

xFree 4 does this you have to go bavck through xf86config and you should have a
working x

As regards the original problem I am afraid RH does this - agaoin quickest way is to
run xf86config again.

There's a program called 'split'. Check the manpage for details.
