I also have this problem. The machine can freeze at any time (haven't
had it happen while the screensaver is running, though), rendering it
unresponsive to any key combination. If something happens to be running
where I can see it, I can watch it run -- I'm just helpless to affect it
in any way. I'm finding RH7 much less reliable than Windoze!
The only other problem I've had is that my MB uses a "Compaq Audio
Device", the ac'97, which is not supported by RH -- it's designed for
Windows. I disabled this at the startup screen and improved reliability
a smidgen -- but I have a sense that the freezes occur when the audio
device is trying to be found (for instance, when new mail comes in).
I'm relatively new at this -- but would recompiling the kernel so as to
leave out all sound modules perhaps help?
Thanks!

If you have ZipSlack working, why bother with RedHat? Slack was
designed to be very customizable, so that you can pare the system down
small enough to fit on a ZIP disk. Just try to fit RH 7.0 on 250M. I
dare you :-) .
You want to install RH 7.0 on a disk using the standard install
utilities? Bloody heck. There should be a couple of disk images on the
RH install CD, one of them called "modules" and another one called
"boot" or "eide" or something. Boot from the bootdisk, insert the
modules disk and mount it, then get to a console and cd to where the
modules are and execute the following commands:
modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc
modprobe lp
modprobe imm
(insert ZIP disk)
fdisk -l /dev/sda
If you get something valid from the fdisk command, you should be able to
just partition and install on the ZIP disk (probably using "expert mode"
as the default will do brain-damaged things) as normal. Booting will be
trickier; you must compile a kernel with all the stuff mentioned above
(and SCSI support, and SCSI disk support) directly in the kernel, not as
modules, put that kernel on a floppy, then have it set the root device
to /dev/sda? . And even then, it might not work.
This isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world. The performance will
suck since I/O is so slow on parport drives. Good luck anyway, HTH.

Which options are you passing to mkisofs, and what is the hardware
that's playing the MP3-CD? mkisofs has the -r and -J options, for Rock
Ridge and Joliet extensions, which allow long file names. However, if
your MP3-CD player only reads the 8+3 ISO9660 filenames, you may be
screwed. Or you can try the -l option to allow 31-character filenames,
but I assume you've already tried that from what you wrote below.
>Does anybody know how to fix this trouble? (I cannot change all the

>31 characters, and contains spaces).
When you say "I cannot..." you're really saying "I'm too lazy to do it."
If your player only keys off the 8+3 filenames, you're going to have to
bite the bullet and write a script to rename your mp3s to 8+3 names
which alphabetize in the order you wish to have the songs played. If
your player can understand Rock Ridge or Joliet, use those options to
mkisofs. HTH,

Probably not. I would suspect somekind of X server problem. RH7 comes
with both 4.01 and 3.3.6. Just guessing you are using 4.01, I would try
3.3.6. You might also look for IRQ conflicts (cat /proc/interrupts).

Win98 (or is it just 98se) comes with internet connection sharing (ICS),
but for Win95 you would need some sort of proxy or NAT32. I have also
used NAT32 to dial into a network through Win95. I am not familiar with
proxies, but http://www.nat32.com/ to check that out.

This seems to be a perfect situation for popen (see `man

In short, popen allows you to run a process and read its
results just like a filestream.

~/.rhosts (600 permission in your home dir) is a list of allowed hostnames
remote_usernames that can rlogin or use other r commands as that user.

In /etc/inetd.conf (not sure how to do it with xinetd) you need to have
the 'shell' line uncommented to use rsh and other r commands and/or
'login' line uncommented to use rlogin or rsh interactively.

See 'man 5 hosts_access'. At the very least you should limit in.rshd and
in.rlogind (and probably in teletd) to your LAN or directly connected
known hosts only (since passwords are passed as plain text).
If you want to remotely access your box from the internet (sshd must be
running), use ssh or to copy files use related scp.

There is a "zero cost" aspect that _tends_ to attach itself to
software licensed under GPL, BSDL, and such, namely the fact that
since no licensing fees accrue to people, there is a pretty strong
tendancy for prices to lean towards $0.
If you charge what people regard as "too much" for your "boxed set,"
then I may have the ability to undercut your price seeing as how
neither of us are paying anyone royalties.
That is exactly why vendors like CheapBytes and LinuxCentral are out
there with "$2 CDs;" that provides a downwards tendancy on pricing.
An interesting bit is that the GPL specifically does _NOT_ preclude
"sale" of softwaer

This is true.

For the most part, the point of a "boxed set," is providing some
'service', such as technical support or a printed manual. There are
lots of people who find it worth spending the $50-$80 for the "boxed
set", for the *service* aspect side, above and beyond the download time
savings (read 30+ hours of download). The local software stores seem to
be doing OK selling "boxed sets", so there *must* be a market for these
boxes.

Of course. Those of us who can sit down at a 'virgin' box, drop in a
Linux CD and perform a proper Linux install, totally without bothering to
look at any docs, aside from looking at the monitor's freq. specs, can
use one of these CDs. Or if we have a CDR and a high-speed InterNet
connection (such as at a large corporation or a large university), can
just download an ISO image and burn our own CDs.
