Installed? No. I just untarred it and ran it from the directory it was
untarred in. Running? Yes, on RedHat 6.2 without incident. It's a
pretty lame web browser though and doesn't do anything particularly well.
I think Mozilla has a much better jump on Opera that most people
originally thought. Opera is way too little, way too late.

Agreed, although I think we're doing okay right now. I mean, with the
popularity of the word "Linux", enough people can/will complain about
particular sites being inaccessible and if the site admin doesn't want to
remedy the problem, it's their loss, not ours.

You can increase the scroll buffer if you are using an X-term, see
`man xterm' on how to do that, or you can just log the output:
program > prog.log 2>&1
OR
program 2>&1 | tee prog.log

Do you have forwarding turned on? I think the command is something like:

echo "1" > /proc/something/ipv4/something
I don't have a Linux machine in front of me at the moment, so I can't look.
I'll post actual command here in morning from work.

Often, the more w's, the more width.

ps -auxwww

Hmm, something interesting on some of those command lines....

 Hello.

When I try to compile anything by doing

 $ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib gcc whatever.c

 all I get is

 gcc: /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib/libc.so.6: no version information
available (required by gcc)
gcc: error in loading shared libraries:
/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib/libc.so.6: undefined symbol:
_dl_global_scope_end

 (1) Is this the correct way to use compat-glibc?

 (2) Can anyone here tell me where the symbol `_dl_global_scope_end' is
defined?

 Thank you.

I don't think you can unless you start script before doing anything else.
(This saves a complete session log when you exit)

With linux, you really don't need an "uninstall" script for something like
wordperfect.

IF you installed it in /opt/wp, for example, just use

rm -r /opt/wp

Subject: How do I get console messages sent to a remote xterm?
Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 20:41:48 GMT

Hello.

I have a RH6.1, 2.2.16 kernel machine running mail, news and masquerading
internet services on my small home network.

There is no monitor on the Linux box and I talk to it over telnet or in a
remote X window.

Looking at the syslog.conf I see that any kernel messages are going to
/dev/console.

How can I get these messages redirected to one of my remote windows, say
pts/3 ? I won't know where to send them until I've logged on so it doesn't
look as though modifying the syslog.conf will help?

This all started when I tried to set up a firewall and switched on the
"log_martians" to catch any IP spoofing but failed to get any messages...

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham

Subject: Problems with fsck on new disk
Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 23:47:26 GMT

I am having problems adding a new harddrive to my system. It was working
fine in Windows. It is a Western Digital Caviar 34000
specs:
7752 Cylinders
16 heads
63 spt
4000.7 megabytes

I tried to fdisk it. It runs fine, but When I ran an fsck it complained
about not being able to find the superblock. I tried iterations of the
superblock backup. No luck. I finally ended up doing a mk2efs /dev/hdb

Now I can run fsck on it. I fdisk deleted all partitions. I then ran
fsck on it. If I run an "fsck -y /dev/hdb" it runs clean.

If I run a "fsck -y -c /dev/hdb" it fails. I get a ton of errors.
Here is what I see (small sample):

[root@sunflower ~]# fsck -c -y /dev/hdb

I then end up with a core file in the directory where I ran fsck from. I
run gdb on it and it is from fsck. I have rebooted a couple times
inbetween.

Do I need to worry about this? The regular fsck runs clean, it's just
when I use the -c flag that I get errors, but I would assume I'd want it
to run completely clean, yes?

Please help :)

I dont care about anything on the drive, as far as I am concerned, I
have wiped it out, but obviously not good enough.

Thank you in advance!!!

Subject: Can't access my /dev/hda1 partition
Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 23:53:07 GMT

I've been running a intel p3 box with windows and mandrake linux 7.0
side by side for a month or two now. It was missing the development
tools so I reinserted the CD and did an upgrade. But when that was done
and the computer rebooted, I couldn't find windows in my LILO boot. So
i went into my lilo.conf file and found out that it wasn't listed there.
So i typed in other = /dev/hda1 and all the other junk that goes along
with it. Saved the buffer. Then I typed in lilo and I got this error:
"first sector of /dev/hda1 doesn't have a valid boot signature". Then
if I click on my disk 0 icon on my desktop (an alias to the windows
drive) it says: "WARNING - mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/hda1 or too many mounted file systems". I did an
fdisk and the partution shows up under /dev/hda1. Now, when I do fdisk
is: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3328. There is
nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in
certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Next, I tried using my windows 98 boot disk and when I went into C:> and
did a "dir" it said couldn't read media type on drive c (or something
very similar to that). Did a fdisk /MBR, and restarted and now said
"Missing Operating System." So I rebuilt the linux master boot record
and I was at least able to once again go into linux which is what I am
using now. I'm not trying to bombard you with all my problems, but
hopefully the more info I give the easier it will be for someone to help
me with this problem. I really need access to my windows partition, and
if anyone can help me once again see my windows files....if even just to
be able to back them up on CD's or Jazz disks or whatever, please please
please lend a helping hand. I apprecaite your time with this lengthy
letter and can't wait to hear from someone;)

Thanks again!
