Hi,

which is the best way to backup a [running] system on a big hd (8GB, with
1GB used)
to a smaller hd (2GB) to use it in a other system ?

dd will not work, of course.
cp will fail with core dump, dont know why.

any idea ?

Bye,
Stefan

Hmm dunno why it didn't work for you- worked for me. But I didn't like
it too much - it ate up almost all my CPU and is still not able to
display DHTML correctly (or at all).
I'll wait a little longer before I start thinking about making it my
default browser...

(though a very nice small download)

I had a problem with the parallel port when I tried to get the printer
to work with RH6.1

On the red hat web page there's a FAQ and somewhere in there was a
solution to my printing problem. I think I had to download an rpm and
run it. Anyway it might hold the solution to your problem.

comp.os.linux.announce is a -moderated- newsgroup. That means only
articles that the moderator allows are posted. Apparently the moderator

Linux implements threading by allowing a fork() to not really copy
everything. This allows a "mostly" complete implementation of pthreads.
But rest assured that the figures you are seeing are not memory usage per
thread. That's the memory usage of the entire process; it just shows up
several times. With some kernel modification in place, 'ps' could probably
recognize this and do something about it to make it clearer, but that
doesn't exist right now. I tried writing some patches to implement
complete POSIX threads on Linux... there's quite a bit of opposition to the
idea among Linux developers who never got past UNIX as of mid 80's, and I
eventually gave up on ever getting such stuff included in the kernel.

What you've got now is a ps that essentially just lists all threads in the
system. Some of the numbers it lists are process specific, so it's
reporting them the same for each thread in the process. It has no way of
finding out which threads belong to which processes.

The problem with installing to your large h/d is probably a bios issue
with your drive geometry. See the Large Disk Mini HOWTO for a
technical explanation: http://www.linux.org/help/ldp/mini/Large-Disk-
4.html#ss4.1

You should be able to install your /boot partition to the second h/d
(hdb) and your /usr /var and whatever other partitions you like to the
large drive (hda).

Hello...

I dont read this group regulary, so please, if you have an answer for
me, reply by e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks in advance!

This is probably a RTFM question, but I dont know where to find
the correct FM... ;-)

I have both Windows and Red Hat 6.1 installed. I also have a SCSI tape
(HP 1588A) attached.

Now Windows stubbornly refuses to make a 100% backup of itself while
running; so I tried to use Linux for making a backup of the Windows
partition for "worst case" scenarios. I had some success with:

cat /dev/hda1 | bzip2 >/winbak.bzip
bzcat /winbak.zip >/dev/hda1

But this puts a lot of stress on the hard drive. I would prefer to make the
backup directly to the tape (/dev/st0), but I dont know how. The "tar"
mans and info files didnt really help either. Can anyone help me?

(I know this kind of backup wouldnt be of much help when the HD is
killed completely, since it will only restore to the exact same /dev/hda1.
But I cannot think of another way for backing up the strange stuff Windows
does with links and absolute file positions...!?)

I have a similar problem. I have the same maxtor drive.
My BIOS doesn't recognize it. Linux does, sort of.
(I have just obtained a flashable version of the latest BIOS
that I intend to try out tonight.)

I can use fdisk to set CHS to 79406/16/63 and make a single
partition that covers the entire disk and then run mke2fs.
However when I mount this partition, I get many errors.

A fsck will claim to have fixed the problems, but then a
subsequent remount will give the same error messages.

If I use fdisk with CHS set identically, but partition into
a 3.xG partition and three 12G partitions and then run mke2fs
I get no problems when I mount the resulting partitions.

The kernel in question is 2.2.9, the ext tools are fairly recent
(but the machine is not here so I can't quote the version).

Muahahaha!

I think that the problem with books about Linux is that the subject is
changing far to fast for most books being useful for more than one or
two years. At least newbies should read first the users' guide and
then most howtos and then they should ask around to borrow some really
good books which will last for twenty years or more. They are
recommended in various reading lists which are floating around.

But from someone who doesn't respect the basic rules for the usenet I
wouldn't even dream to expect that he has grasped enough Unix and
network culture to sell ONE good book about Linux.

It might be easier to use this instead:
cp -r /home/john/ftp/current /home/john/ftp/backup/

The -r argument says to copy recursively, so everything in current,
even any subdirectories and their contents will be copied.

Hope this helps,

I don't have anything to add to the discussion except the
comment that your monitor's failure almost certainly wasn't
caused by anything you were doing. It was probably on the
brink of failure and almost any major change would have put
it over the edge.

One cause of this could be that the lilo boot loader did not get
installed properly for some reason during the installation. That
error message definitely indicates something is wrong with it.

Try booting from the installation meda, i.e. either the installation
floppy or the CD, and at the boot prompt at the bottom of the
screen use
vmlinuz root=/dev/XXXX
where XXXX is your root partition. After doing this, check that
you have an /etc/lilo.conf file and as root run the program
/sbin/lilo
If you don't know what your root partition is, give us some
more details about your disk. Likely possibilities might
be /dev/hdaN where N = 1,2,3,5,6,7. It can't hurt to experiment.
If that still doesn't work, there are other things to try, but
let's first see if that does work.

The fips2 utility on the Linux release CD can resize a Windows
partition after it has been defragged PROVIDED it is possible
to move all the files on the partition to the first part of
the disk by defrag. But some vendors put unmovable files
at the end of the windows partition. You can see that during
defrag by clicking on the right button to show details. Also,
if the disk has not been dfragged, fips will fail.

In that case, the easiest thing to do would be to use Partition
Magic which can handle the resizing. It is best to make a
PM mergency disk from Windows during installation and not actually
install PM in Windows. Then run PM from that floppy. PM
will also tell you when you have resized your windows partition
so it lies below cylinder 1024. In most cases you need
10 or 20 MB free below cylinder 1024 to be able to use lilo
to boot Linux from your hard disk. If you use fips, you have
to make sure of that manually.

serial cable from a pc running windoze to a loptop running linux.

Thanks,

I'm running slackware v.3.5, kernel v. 2.2.9.

I haven't been able to get my printer, an HP Paintjet, to print the accents
accompanying the text. They appear on the screen when I run pine, vim, or
in x-windows. They just won't print. Instead, strange characters print in
place of the accents.

I inserted a line in my printcap filter file that contains an escape
sequence for a foreign language symbol set. Although another escape
sequence in the same file worked for generating CF LF, this sequence didn't
work. The output was different from before, but the characters weren't what
I was hoping to see printed. The same thing happened when I inserted the
roman-8 symbol set escape sequence.

Does anyone have a clue as to how to do this? And I've already read the
Printing-Howto and Printing-Usage-Howto. Are there any other documents I
could read about this, and where are they?
