Keep in mind how Linux (and its accompanying documentation) comes into

Not defending its weaknesses, just saying that they are probably to be
expected at this point.

Please, is this the best you can come up with? And su'ing from a telnet
connection with plain text traffic is better how? Both of them suck, anything
done in super user mode should be done over ssh2, at the very least.

Regardless, Slack is many times more secure than RH. RH has a habit of
including many more suid root apps than anyone else. Let's count the number
of RH CERT alerts compared to strictly Slack, shall we?

Does anyone have any ideas why I cannot get either Red Hat 5.1 or FreeBSD
2.2.6 to detect my CD-ROM drive during setup? I have created boot-disks for
both and when selecting CD-ROM as the install medium, the CD-ROM cannot be
found.
This is a supported device. The only thing I can think that would present a
problem is that the drive is plugged into my Soundblaster soundcard. I would
plug it in as a secondary IDE had it not been for the fact that the drive is
34 pin.
Any answers?

First let me tell you what I have: Redhat 5.2 installed on a partition of my
6.4gb IBM drive with a K6 233, Maxtech 33.6 modem, Diamond Stealth II video,
and sound blaster card. I have downloaded the rpms necessary for X-windows
to function with my video card. I have configured my sound card to work. But
I still haven't been able to dial my ISP while in Linux. I am new to Linux
and Unix in general. If you reply to me, please don't assume any knowledge
on my part. I have received some replies, and I sincerely appreciate them,
but some have been entirely over my head.

Question 1. : Why does "GPM Mouse services" hang when I shutdown
(shutdown -h -t secs now)?

Question 2. : Where can I get some definitive help on connecting to my ISP?
My modem works: it initializes and I can dial my ISP in minicom. It connects
and then disconnects without doing anything. No login prompt, no jibberish.
It just diconnects after about 5 secs. Now I don't want to use minicom to
connect to my ISP. I was just trying to verify that my modem was working in
Linux. I want to be able to use pppd and a chat script. I've read this and
that and everything says this file (etc/ppp/options, ..., and others) should
have some certain strings. Please enlighten me on which files require
altering in order to connect and what modification need to be done.

Subject: getting inode information
Date: 16 Feb 1999 05:10:07 GMT

Hi,

        I am trying to get the inode number given a file name. I need to
 implement a system call the finds it.

        I looked into the system calls like open, stat and they are using a
 kernel function namei() for getting the inode for a given file name.

        I wrote a system call that looks like,

asmlinkage unsigned long assoc(void)
{

        struct inode *in;
        unsigned long i;
        int j;

        j = namei("/root/junk", &in);
        if (j >= 0){
                i = in->i_ino;
                return i;
        }
        else{
                return -1000;
        }
}

        I dont know why my system call is not working when I almost
 replicated the code from functions like stat and open.. Is there any
 special condition that I need to take care of?

        I would greatly appreciate any help that you can do..

        Thanks a lot for your time and effort.

You have to realize that Windoze load program faster, but benchmarks
are slower. The only reason Windoze load programs faster is that it
loads a segment of that program into memory before you decided you
wanted to use it (ie MSWord).

there a current standard for such a condition?

or is shell scripting (and communicating with shell scripts) limited to

I've heard this reason for having IE on Linux/other *nix before. Frankly, I
think it's stupid. I am a web developer, too, and what I've noticed (and
apparently too few others haven't) is that *no web browser works the same when
ported to a new platform.* Netscape on Windows and Netscape on Linux can look
completely different, especially if you use the default font settings. Porting
IE to Linux is only going to make things *worse*, because Linux IE isn't going
to look exactly like Windows IE, neither of which will look/act like MacOS IE.
In the end, you'll end up having to have both browsers set up on yet another
platform to test on.

Now, having said all this, Mozilla, with the new XPFE might help fix some of
this nonsense.  Maybe.

And, as far as this Alex guy saying Netscape doesn't support full JavaScript,
that's bull. Netscape _invented_ JavaScript, and even though they turned the
specs over to the ECMA for maintenance, Netscape _continues_ to set the standard
in JavaScript support. IE's JScript is exactly what it sounds like: a cheap
knock-off.

How do I go about compiling support for it into the kernel?
I heard that I need SCSI support. Then I also heard about compiling

I have Slackware 3.6 with a 2.0.36 kernel. Seems it comes with ftape-2.08.
Should I download a 4.x ftape? Can I unpack that into the Linux source tree
or should I keep it separately? Can someone please tell me how to configure
it?
I'm really at a loss. I spent lots of time setting this Linux box up

and I don't dare to play around with it too much before backing it up.
Could some nice soul please help me out?

Ah. You should have mentioned this. Your problems are much beyond just
recognizing dynamic libs.

I have a K6-2/3D that had problems like these, but they were fixed by
disabling the external cache and it sounds like you already tried that.
Check out the file /usr/doc/FAQ/txt/GCC-SIG11-FAQ for more ideas, though
some of its advice might be pretty dated. Also try a dejanews search on
comp.os.linux.hardware for "K6 memory", or something like that.

BTW, make sure you can get through two complete kernel compilations before
concuding it's fixed. And before that, don't install any software compiled
on the K6 even if it looks like the compilation was successful. Though
you probably already know this.

Good luck,
-Tom

Hi. I am trying to get an ethernet network up and running on my two

SMC 'EZ Card 10/100' Fast Ethernet PCI Card and
SMC 'EZ Card 10' Ethernet ISA Card

I got the two different ones because one machine does not have PCI slots.

ANyway, I cannot seem to locate an appropriate driver for either of them.
None of the SMC drivers work (the card is never even recognized at boot
time). I looked at the www site: cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/ and could
not find anything for these cards, even though I think it said all major
cards released through 1/1999 were supported. The ISA card claims to be
NE2000 compatible, but that did not work either.

Has anyone else gotten these to work, or should I try to find different
cards?
