After I upgraded my Linux to RH 6.1 I found that pdksh is broken in RH 6.1.

I have scripts that I run on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Unixware, Linux. At
the begining of the scripts I create readonly variables and assign them
values.

Example:

typeset -r ExeName=${0##*/}

This works on all Unix(s) and RH 6.0, in RH 6.1 I get error message that I
cannot assign value to readonly variables. My work around was to copy ksh
from RH 6.0 system.

Anyone else has same problem?

I reported the problem to RH and today (after few months) I got back following
reply:

I am looking for a good IMAP4 client for Linux. I tried Netscape, and it
seems it will do the job, but the problem is that I cannot cenrtally
configure the netscape client. I would like to use netscape for all
the users in our company, but it is absolutely necessary that I can configure
it from the central config file and lockdown the configuration so that the
users cannot change certain parameters.

Hrm, like what? I promptly took away everything except the navigation
toolbar (especially that sidebar; it takes up too much of my screen!). At
any rate, it doesn't seem to be running much faster on my computer; in
fact, it seems a bit slower. I wonder if it's because it's a debug
release.

Sure, Linux can be a good application server. IBM is offering DB2,
Domino and WebSphere Application Server for Linux. If you're a member
of the IBM Developer's program you can get these for free.
I don't think MS is going to have a SQL server for Linux anytime soon.

IMHO: anybody that uses the news-reader that comes with a www-client
*deserves* to loose.

I have never seen any web-browser/news-reader that could stand up to
slrn (my personal favorite). using Netscrape's news-reader or
M$ Lookout^WOutlook is comparable to using a microwave to dry your

It may be doable but it's no substitute for the real thing.

Yes, it does look like a web page: specifically, a cheesy, supercorporate
one, like (surprise) an AOL page. It's a lot like some of the slimier
modern magazines, where you can't tell the difference between the real
articles, the ads, and the "special advertising sections." You can't tell
where the browser stops and the page begins. Is that a button, or a link?
I don't know...

Fluff? It would be nice to have more of the genuinely useful features,
which are sorely lacking, compared to IE. How about a font size button, for
people who actually read stuff on the web? The "send a link" button? How
about a faster, easier way of selecting and managing bookmarks?

The browser does seem faster, especially in rendering tables. I've heard a
lot of hype about the new engine, how the whole thing is more intelligently
written, etc., and I have no reason to doubt it. But user-interface and
feature-wise, it offers nothing new. In fact, it's a step back. I think
this is intentional. As I alluded to above, I really do think the browser
is just a tool to steer users toward Netscape/AOL and partnered content. By
having the browser fade into the background, a user is more likely to click
on the links on the Netscape/AOL/partner page.

I feel like the industry has sunk to a new low, and that I've been slimed.

This is the kind of ignorance that's typical of Microsoft
customers. They see something bundled with the OS and they
think they are getting something for free.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. For example, people
see IE bundled with Windows and they think Microsoft is helping
them save money. In reality Microsoft indirectly charged you for
IE by cleverly hiding the charge in the form of an "upgrade" to
Windows 95. What people don't realize is that Windows 98 was
nothing but a way for Microsoft to recuperate the development
cost of IE.

Windows 98 is practically the same product as Windows 95, with
some bug fixes. In a competitive market Microsoft could never
have charged $90 for these bug fixes. Thanks to their monopoly
Microsoft was able to get away with this crime.

The bottom line is that unregulated monopolies are a bad idea.
When Microsoft bundles something with the OS it may look like
they are giving you something for free, but once Microsoft
drives the competition out of business they will raise prices
and freeze innovation, as Microsoft has done with their desktop
OS and productivity applications.

This will look like...

First, enable ppp dial-on-demand to your ISP
Next, ensure that the pppd "idle-disconnect" parameter is set to a
suitable value (say, 5 minutes idle will drop the connection)
Then, set up a cron job that runs your fetchmail at a suitable time
(I do it around 2:30 AM).

At the appointed time,
- cron runs fetchmail,
- fetchmail attempts to connect to your ISP's mail server,
- the TCP traffic generated by fetchmail causes dial-on-demand to
initiate the pppd call to your ISP
- pppd connects to your ISP
- fetchmail connects to your ISP's mail server
- fetchmail siphons your mail from the ISP to your system
- fetchmail terminates,
- there is no traffic over your PPP connection for the selected
  "idle-disconnect" time
- pppd disconnects the connection to your ISP, and hangs up the phone.
- All done!!

I usually have fetchmail and leafnode run at the same time (about 2:30
AM), with a five minute "idle disconnect" value, and dial-on-demand
enabled. Works great!

Having auto and user together doen't make much sense, as the partition
will be mounted automatically on startup, so a non-root user wont have
to mount it manually. That said, 'user' is useful if a non-root user
wants to unmount the partition and re-mount it later for whatever reason.

>Problem is that when i am logged on as a user I only have 'read' access

That's because (v)fat filesystems dont attach an owner or permissions
to files/inodes. By default, all files on a (v)fat filesystem will be
owned by root.root with permission of 755.

There's (at least) two ways to fix it, the quick way and the proper way.

The quick way is to add the option 'uid=xxx' to /etc/fstab, where xxx
is your userid. This will make the files on the filesystem owned by you.

The proper way (IMHO) is to add a group called 'fat', 'msdos' or whatever,
add the options 'gid=xxx,umask=002' to /etc/fstab (where xxx is the gid
of the group you created) and then add yourself to the new group. The
options here will set the group owner of the file to the new group
(gid=xxx) and file access permissions of rwx to the group.

This "proper" way allows you to give access to other users. You may
decide to set the umask to 007 so that anyone not in the proper group
will have no access to the files on the (v)fat filesystem.

I've heard of some Netscape versions unzipping files while they save it. You
might try and see if the files are already unzipped.
It is also possible that your files got corrupted during the download or a
network error occurred and Netscape stopped the download before it was
finished. Try downloading again and use the "save as" feature (right-click
on the link), this should eliminate both problems.

Perhaps the bootloader is not installed properly or corrupted. Try
installing LILO again.

This seems to be a problem only with the gnome terminal.

Hi Patrick.

I did just this:

backed up work
uninstalled SO
deleted directories (manually)
removed icons(manually)
        - in KDE, you just right click on the icon and select remove.
installing SO again, creates this icon again. So no worries. :-)

Hi.

I am unable to change my root password. Whatever I do, it still keeps the
old password. Could someone please help?

I did this:

I invoked 'passwd', typed in the new password twice and it reported
"Password Changed".

Now, when I exited root and tried to login again, I couldn't use the new
password. It still understood only the old one!

Suspecting that the minimum period when you can't change password has not
yet expired, I did this:

# passwd -n 0 root

And repeated the above procedure. No, it did not help either. Permissions
of the /etc/passwd are rw-r--r--. I suppose this is the way it should be,
right?

And yeah, /var/log/messages reported nothing unusual; just that root had
changed password and that it was successful.

Well, then what is wrong?

Rather perplexed,

No conversion is required. A file is a file.

Yup it means the kernel has not recognised your ethernet card. What type is
it? You could then run control-panel and manually insert the kernel module
for the card, then al should be well.

Cheers,

Steve

I'm not a Linux expert by a long shot, but what Windows stuff do you want
to convert? MS Word 2000? Text files? What stuff?
