yes. at work i let gnus do the sending. i haven't tried the pop3
fetching, but i reckon it works.

Forget that. You're not meant to TeX it, so it doesn't work. It's for
example only.

In doing this, they are not any different from commercial Unices.
Some commercial Unix vendors (Sun, Digital, HP, ...) have agreed on
supporting an official, certified, standard Unix, but the standard
is just a subset of their features and most of it is present in Linux
as well.
If you want to learn Solaris, get yourself a Solaris account, for instance,
by installing Solaris on your PC. The list of differences between Solaris
and some Linux distribution is really too long and detailed to allow a
useful summary.
>It would help me learn *nix in general more quickly if, for example, I dont

That's Unix for you. There is simply no consistency here.
There's also a thread on this in comp.unix.admin if you're interested.
>So I was wondering which distro comes closest to a generic commercial *nix ?
Having administered SuSE, RedHat, SunOS 4 and Solaris, I can say that
as a general rule, the difference between Linux and Linux, or between
SunOS 4 and Solaris, aren't any bigger than the differences between Linux
and Solaris. On each platform, there are so many choices between
components (delivered with the vendor or obtained elsewhere) that
the inherent differences between the platforms are comparatively
unimportant. For example, for printing, there's 'SysV style' printing
for Solaris, but due to popular demand, 'BSD style printing' is also
supported, and you can always choose to install the third party product
that also runs on your Linux box. This is basically the story for *any*
component on your system.
>Any and all suggestions are more than welcome.
My suggestion, if you want to be a sysadmin, is that learning how to
efficiently administer 100 Redhat boxes (or SuSE boxes, or Debian boxes)
is much more valuable than knowing your way around on 1 Redhat box,
1 Debian box, 1 Solaris box, and 1 IRIX box. The priniples remain the
same, the details will always vary.

Subject: Deadly crash with SuSE 7.0 if screen saver enabled.
Date: 18 Oct 2000 17:46:23 -0500
A few weeks ago I installed SuSE 7.0 with gnome. My son likes
screen savers so he put one. Sometime during the night it crashed,
not just gnome but X and apparently the mouse and keyboard. At the
time I thought that the OS was crashed so I pressed on the reset
switch which made it recover, after 30G of fsck.
Suspecting the screen saver from previous experience with Winblows NT 4.0
I disabled it. Yesterday afternoon my son put the screensaver back for
some reason, I had forgotten to tell him about my suspicions.
Sometime last night it crashed again. As in the previous case there
was a display of lines across the screen. The difference this time
is that I have another computer connected to the ethernet card and
I was able to log on. I could kill all the apps that I could see but
was not able to kill the xserver which must have left a ghost somewhere.
I could not give a soft reboot but could do a shutdown -n which got
me 30G of fsck.

Subject: IPmasq, cable modem and intranet 100mb fail
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 22:44:25 GMT
Hi ! I have a problem with IPmasquerade like Vinson Armstead have. The
problem are that the Internet connection are slow after my Linux box.
My Setup are curently like that:
cable modem
|
ETH0 Ne2k-pci DHCP 10baseT
Pentium2-300MHz 128meg RAMM
RedHat 7.0
ETH1 rtl8129 192.168.0.1 100baseT
|
Fast Ethernet switch 10/100
|
Ethernet 100mb
Workstations with linux and Win98
Recently I upgrade My networking speed to Fast Ethernet 100, before I used
the same configuration except ETH1 of the Firewall for a 10baseT and hub at
10mb. All worked find, the Internet speed in the workstation was 100k/s.
Now, the speed of Internet in my workstation are at 3k/s, but, in the
firewall box I can download at up to 100k/s. I changed the switch for my old
hub 10mb, the intranet pass to 10mb, oups... the internet speed goes up at
30k/s, good, but I loose the speed of my intranet traffic.
I installed Internet sharing in Win98SE in the same box , surprise ! All work
find. The Internet speed are good at my workstation.
Conclusion :
the probleme are in Linux, but where ?
What I think : IPmasquerade run with IPchains correctly if I use two 10mb
cards in the Linux box. Maybe it's a mis-compatibility between 10mb traffic
and 100mb in Linux ? Or what I'm more sure, IPCHAIN !!? I don't know ! :-(
I search in howto : IPmasquerade,net-3,ethernet. I saw nothing about that
problem!
Questions : I have almost the same hardware setup than Vinson Armstead, and
probably the same probleme differently explained.
If someone have the solution please tell it ! I'm sure that I'm not the only
one to have this problem ! thanks a lot !

Time has passed since the HOWTO was written. Look for version 1.4.
Or just drill down through applications, sound, players until you
find the current version. That's what I did.

Hi, just a thought. Try looking for .Xdefaults. That file contains
window geometries for different applications. This is how I set up my
windows in RH6.2/gnome:
!
! geometry resources
!
XPaint.geometry: 230x355+70+0
XPaint.brush.geometry: 230x140+70+400
XPaint.tfill.geometry: 230x140+70+400
Canvas.geometry: +325+0
emacs.geometry: 80x25+5+30
emacs.font: 7x14
emacs.foreground: gray32
emacs.background: LightPink2
netscape.geometry: 445x615+7+6
See if you can figure out what to do from here. Let me know if you
need help, and I'll try. -- d

Hi everybody,
The advice of Paul Kimoto worked.
Thanks Paul
I did :
[acizmeli@seawifs acizmeli]$ strings
/usr/local/matlab5/etc/lnx86/lmhostid | egrep "\.so\."
/lib/ld-linux.so.1
libc.so.5
and saw that these two libraries were missing in my RedHat 7.0.
Replacing them solved the problem.
Now another problem :
I try to run matlab but it would not:
acizmeli@seawifs acizmeli]$ matlab
/usr/local/matlab5/bin/lnx86/matlab: can't load library 'libXt.so.6'
To run matlab, the following libraries
libdl.so.1 => /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14
libXt.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.1
libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6.0
libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6.3
are needed. I checked my system :
[root@seawifs acizmeli]# ls /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14
ls: /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14: No such file or directory
[root@seawifs acizmeli]# ls /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0
[root@seawifs acizmeli]# ls /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.1
[root@seawifs acizmeli]# ls /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6.0
/usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6.0
[root@seawifs acizmeli]# ls /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6.3
/usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6.3
I will find and download /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14 from internet however I do
not know what to do with the three other libraries which are there but
not visible to Matlab. How to make Matlab to find these libraries?
thank you for your help

Well, fwiw, even though lsattr shows nothing, just for kicks, did you try
'chattr -i '? Maybe someone fooled w/ the lsattr binary? Just a guess.
