Redhat 5.2 isn't all that great. You will have alot less problems by
upgrading to 6.2
It seems you have programs that are not getting terminated and that are
still keeping your drives mounted. umount still as of today does not support
force unmounting. It's best if you manually attempt to unmount your drives
before rebooting. I'm guessing you're mounted drives other then your root
/ ) drive.

Well, the good news is that, as an ISA hardware modem, the USR 5687 is
certainly configurable. The bad news is tht you probably have it set up
for PNP. Your options are to look in the manual that came with the modem
and set the jumpers to specific IRQ settings [which is what I did], or
you can look into isapnptools to configure it as PNP. I've never done
that, but you can check out the isapnptools web site at
http://www.roestock.demon.co.uk/isapnptools/index.html for details.
It's been a while since I've actually USED a modem, not to mention
installed one. However, IRQs 3 and 4 are usually open if you don't
already have a modem. IRQ 5 is uaually used by your sound card.

This is a mini-HowTo to get really high transfer rates :
- backup everything;
- Kick your IDE hard-disk big time;
- go to the nearest computer dealer;
- buy SCSI.
do this and you'll never again bother about transfer rates.

I run a small shell service and now after about a week and always after cron
jobs by my users, I'm getting this error (which pretty much makes the
machine not usable): "grow inodes: inode-max limit reached". It looks like a
person's crontab job is opening up WAY too many files or soemthing over the
course of time. How do I prevent this from happening?

For manual backups CD-R(W) are fine up to 650 megs. But for real backups
(automated and larger sizes), you'll want either a tape drive or a very
large HD that you can put multiple backups on. Also if you go with the large
HD method, be sure to get 2 of them and run linear raid. That way if one
dies the other picks up the slack.

And here's another one:
daVinci is a universal, generic visualization system for automatic
generation of high-quality drawings of directed graphs. Graphs are
frequently used in computer applications as a general data structure to
represent objects and relationships between them. They are used to
implement hierarchies, dependency structures, networks, configurations,
dataflows, and so on. In despite of this manifold demand, techniques to
visualize such graphs are not common in today's computer applications. So
frequently a user has to deal with uncomfortable textual interfaces or poor
ad-hoc drawings of graphs, because high-quality graph layout is difficult
to implement and reusable tools for graph visualization are often hard to
find.
This fact was the motivation for developing the interactive graph
visualization system daVinci. The primary objective is to provide a
universal layout tool for directed graphs. This way any application program
can be equiped with a comfortable daVinci graph user interface in a very
short time, and the application programmer does not need to deal with
layout algorithms and computer graphics. Instead, the application is able
to send its graphs to daVinci's API (Application Programmer Interface) and
let daVinci do the visualization.

GNU tar (the standard with Linux) is perfectaly capable of saving
and restoring your whole system. I prefer to copy each
filesystem separately by cd-ing to the mount points and using
the --one-file-system option. To restore this you will need
tools on your boot floppy to partition and make the file
systems (or boot the install CD for these steps) but this
allows you to make a different layout on the new machine.

I can't help you with your punctuation/capitalization, but...
Either you'll have to boot of the CD (have you tried this?) or boot of
a floppy you made. What's the error message rawrite gives you? It
won't work in a DOS box, you need to go to MS-DOS mode.
If not, you can get a boot disk from www.toms.net/rb and use that to
write the floppy.

It sounds like there might be a problem with the shared libraries;
try typing (as root):
ldconfig
and try again, although I don't know why a fresh (is it fresh?) install
would have this problem.

i am installing Linux Mandrake 7 on my PC.
when i get to the last step of the install (X Config)after i have

About 10 seconds after that the HardDrive stops responding.
If i reboot and go into Linux i have access to the textBased Shell, but if
i type "startx" at the prompt, i get an error loading KDE message.
I have re-installed 3 times now choosing different monitors. But get the
same problem. Is there a monitor setting that works well with most SVGA
screens?
I cannot try the expert install because this is my first time on Linux.
I have a P-II 200MHz with 48Mb Ram. The Linux install was done via
HardDisk w/ a bootdisk. LInux is installed on my secondary SCSI drive (D:
in windows) and the drive was partitionned usuing DiskDrak (in the
install) with a 96Mb SWAP partitition. The drive is a 1Gb SCSI drive.
I have a feeling it is a monitor problem any suggestions?

The best way is to just write normal LaTeX and instead of typing
"latex fred.tex" type "pdflatex fred.tex". With the use of the hyperef
package you get all the links etc. This is by far the best way.
If you don't want to use latex, and can get a PostScript file then you
can use GhostScript to do the job. However make sure you are using at
least version 6.0 as with earlier versions the output is horrible if
you use fonts other than Times, Helvetica and Courier.

I don't know for certain, but it could be due to Microsoft using
Joliet extensions instead of Rock Ridge. You need to explicitly
compile your kernel to support Joliet. I believe that most distros
will support Joliet out of the box, but I'm not sure on this.

Subject: Cable Modem???
Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 20:30:03 GMT
I have Comcast Cable Modem service, and use a network card to connect to
the internet. My card was supported in Redhat, but I switched to Suse,
and now I have no idea how to connect to the internet. HELP!
