CPU coolers are generally not software controlled, and thus NOT OS

I think what Fung Wai Keung is on about is some sort of software to put the
CPU to sleep when not in use, similar to Waterfall on the Windows platform.
This slows the system and puts the CPU to sleep as much as possible while
nothing else is going on. The problem with windows, as I seem to remember
having been told, is that there are a lot of busy-waiting loops in it -
hence, when it's supposedly idle the processor is actually using a lot of
power anyway.
I don't much like the idea of software-based cooling solutions. They're
really only going to be of benefit in machines with inadequate cooling anyway
- like overclocked machines - and even then, they'll really only improve the
stability while the machine isn't doing much. Give it a real hammering for an
extended period (games, anyone? :-) and the poor CPU is worked constantly -
and getting no benefit at the time it most needs extra cooling.
That said, there may be some merit to these programs on portable machines,
where reduced power consumption equals extended battery life.
I don't know whether there is anything exactly like this for Linux - I assume
there probably isn't., but the apm support might allow for changing how
rapidly the machine goes into suspend mode.
Mark.

That's the way it's supposed to work.
When you run a shell script it starts another shell to execute
the commands in the file. That new shell is a child process
of your login shell. A child process can not modify the environment
of its parent process (your login shell). If you want to
do such a thing you'll have to downgrade your OS to MS-DOS.
Alternatively you could use your login shell to execute the
script like this:
If your login shell is bash, ksh, sh:
. your_script
(that dot is the command)
If your login shell is csh, tcsh:
source your_script
This executes the file without starting a child process.

I've installed RH 6.0 and used PRINTTOOL to setup the printer, an HP
DeskJet. When I try to print though (even the ASCII test page), nothing
happens. It's like it's not really even trying to send anything to the
printer.
When I setup the printer in PRINTTOOL, it detects my parallel port as lp0.
Anything I can try to see what might be causing the problem?

I think "insmod -f" will work up to 2.2.14, but not 2.2.15 and beyond. However,
PCtel drivers (based on serial.c) will work for all of 2.2 as well as 2.4 kernels.
They have released enough codes to compile on newer kernels (2.2.10 to 2.2.16
and 2.4.0). If you really need to have a software modem, get a PCtel modem. I
got several of them because they are cheap and doesn't draw much power when not in
use (most of the time). You can download the driver modules at http://linnix.com.

It is attempting to perform a DNS lookup and waiting for it to time
out. On this machine it triggers a demand-dial on an ISDN line and the
lookup completes. You can suppress this by arranging that it gets an
immediate "network unreachable" error to the lookup attempt. Basically
if you do an
ifdown <interface>
then it will get an immediate error as the DNS query cannot be routed
and your troubles will softly and suddenly vanish away. Doing an ifup on
the same interface will restore normal service.

You can usually delete files with funny names by using wildcards.
The simplest way is probably:
rm -i *
This will ask you for a yes/no response to delete each
file in the current directory. Just answer no to all the
files except the one you want to delete. Of course this is
a tad dangerous as a slip of the finger can remove something
you didn't intend.
If your file is really called AAAA/ then you can
narrow it down a bit with something like:
rm -i AAAA*
OR
rm -i AAAA?

The Linux kernel does this already. See arch/i386/kernel/process.c

Hi,
My home system has been the following RedHat versions
3.0.3 -> 4.2 -> 5.0 -> 5.1 -> 6.1
All you do is use the install floppy (or boot off the CD if your BIOS
lets you) and type 'upgrade' (or IIRC 'upgrade text' to avoid the GUI)
The opening screen tells you what to do.
Sit back, relax and appreciate the power of the package managed
system... ;-)
It writes a log file to /tmp which will show any conflicts and creation
of saved config files - you may need to merge config files in this case
- it saves the old one as <file>.rpmsave.

Hi,
How I can find bare.i image? This maybe the only possible to me,
in fact "timeout" in lilo.conf seem to be set equal to zero.
On the Slackware site is possible to create this diskette via network
for Slack 4.0, 3.9 or less (I'm not
sure for the version number I have, however my kernel is
2.2.4 ?
Can I create a boot bar.i image from any kernel or distribution as for
example from Slack 7.0? My experience with in linux is limitted
Thank You,
Ould

I - just out of curiousity - downloaded
http-analyze2.01-base.tar.gz and
http-analyze2.01-linux.tar.gz
from their site and it installed like a charm on my FreeBSD (4.0) system
(NB: FreeBSD runs linux ELF binaries) . I ran the test like
./http-analyze -vm3f -o testd /var/log/httpd-access.log
and got a nice statistics directory.
I can only imagine that your PATH and environment is screwed or some
binary is missing. What does echo $PATH give?
I'm getting this error when I do e.g. unsetenv $PATH , like:
# echo $PATH
/usr/local/jdk1.2/bin:.:/home/kuku/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/samba/bin:/usr/local/jdk1.1.8/bin
# unsetenv PATH
# echo $PATH
PATH: Undefined variable.
# ./http-analyze
./http-analyze: Command not found.
#
(yes, I have . in path when root, so what - and don't look at my path too
critical :-).
