Don't think it makes sense to make more than one partition bootable.
This flag tels the MSDOS MBR loader where the next stage loader is.
If this happens to be a MSDOS partition, that partition will also be
marked as the C: drive, otherwise the first MSDOS partition will be the
C: drive.
Therefore you can keep the MSDOS MBR loader intact and mark the first
linux partition as (the only) bootable partition and install lilo there.
This will still allow lilo to load the MSDOS partition, even when this is
not marked as bootable. LILO don't care of the partition it is booting
is marked bootable or not.
All this was designed by Microsoft to enable multiboot MSDOS and Xenix
systems. Remember that Xenix was a Microsoft product, before it became
an SCO product.

Subject: Pseudo terminals and PPP
Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 18:33:46 +1000
Hello all,
I'm trying to setup a server which will be accepting data from a
network. This data will consist of packets in a protocol designed for a
special modem we have. These packets will contain PPP packets. We wish
to be able to maintain hundreds of thousands of PPP links to different
devices. I have been looking for a PPP server which can make lots of
connections on one port but havn't been able to find one.
Does anyone know of a PPP server which can be pointed to a
Pseudo terminal and accept packets from lots of PPP sessions all from
the same terminal. I have had a look at putting an application on the
terminal which de-multiplexes all these PPP sessions to a single Pseudo
terminal each but I cannot figure out how to have more than 256 pseudo
terminals under linux - and it doesn't seem feasable to have so many
active pppd processes each with a pseudo terminal pair open. I would
really like to avoid having to write a PPP server myself as we are
pushing a deadline.
If anyone can offer some suggestions it would be a great help.
Thanks for your advice

Any suggestion?

Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 10:20:24 +0000
Hi,
I have a Redhat 6.1 system here at work and a Mandrake 6.1 system at home
both of which seem to have the same problem related to the changing of
passwords. If I have a user who's password filed contains :*: and I try and
change the password using the standard passwd program it all apperears to
work ok, but when I go back and check the file, the password is still :*:
and the user cannot log in. If there is already an encrypted password in
the field then the password is changed as expected and the new password is
inserted into the password field. Plesae note I am *NOT* running shadow
passwords, well I told it not to install shadow passwords at install time.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know what the soultion is.
Thanks,
Phill.

Depending on what extactly you'vedone with the partitions, it may
be a simple matter of re-running lilo after booting linux from a
floppy (if all you did was change the location of the partition
that holds the kernel). If you've added or deleted partitions,
you may also need to edit /etc/lilo.conf to reflect changes in
the number of the boot partition and running rdev to change the
hard-coded locations for the "/" partition and swap partition.

Yeah, but really now... these extra steps should pose no
difficulty to the kind of hardware he's talking about.
I've run linux on a lot of low powered systems (ever tried
running X on a 486 laptop? :>). Never have I see big
lags/freezes assocated with loading up man pages. This is
most definately not "business as usual."
Out of curiosity, what happens when you jump to a console? Do
you have your /etc/inittab configured to have getty's sitting on
tty1...6? Do you get the same lags when you load up man pages
from console?
cheers,

Today, I was trying to install Phat linux,I encountered some problems.
Why is it than when I clicked on the file linuxsys.IMG(which is all that
is in the folder for Phat linux), nothing happened. The documentation at
the site said to unzip the file to a folder named '/phat/'.
In windows how do you go about doing that?Windows will not let you name
files with special characters. So how do I set this up then.If this totally
sounds confusing, it is.The specs on my system are that I have a compaq
7360 with 64 mb memory, 8 for video,and a k6-2 amd 500 mhz processor,so
Linux should run fine on my system. Is there anything that I can do?Also
when I try to unzip the file I receive the message from aladdin expander
that it has detected a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) mismatch. And it
says that the file may be encrypted or corrupted.I really would welcome
any and all help wth this, thanks:)

I am not sure of the relationship between the X system and networking, but
there is *some* relationship - afaik you need Networking defined in the
kernel for X to work at all.
Any delay of 60+ seconds is going to be a timeout of some description. I
would expect this to be something really arcane like the '127.0.0.0
localhost' line not being your /etc/hosts.
There are newsgroups specifically aimed at X11, and I would tend to try this
one there if you don't get a sensible answer here in the next day or so.

If you overwrote your Win98 partition, then it is gone.
If you can't even boot from diskette, it looks as though this is what you did.
All flavours of 'fdisk' (including the Windoze versions) are extremely dangerous if
you do not know exactly what you are
doing with them, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
sorry.
(to see if there really are no windoze partitions, go in as root and do a 'fdisk -l'.
If all of your partitions are
described as 'Linux xxxxx' in the System column, you are out of luck).

That is a very complicated question. A 600MHZ alpha should be faster
than a 1200mhz Pentium, just because of the bus width. An Alpha system
also has better I/O characteristics, and floating point.
That's just speed. There are a host of other issues involved. It is not
an easy this or that.
If you have access to both, setup both and do some benchmarks. Check
reliability. Check front side bus speeds, Check the disk subsystem. PCI
32/64? Memory? etc.

Pay attention to any error messages that you see. Often, packages depend

Feature? Most of the default accounts that are created with *s in the
password field are things like "news", "lp", and "daemon", which you
shouldn't be logging in as anyway. There's a workaround; merely edit the
password file using vipw and remove the * for the user(s) you wish to
change passwords on before running passwd.

This wasn't a good idea. man pwconv so you can get shadow passwords
up and running if you care at all about security. Shadow passwords will
probably also fix the problem with the passwd command....

/sbin/init.d/boot.local or /etc/rc.d/rc.local is the right location for

Why use minicom when you can do full networking?
You can do it with ethernet via dhcp. Much faster as well.
