Subject: HELP!!! Problems using DAT-steamer
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 08:46:39 +0100
Dear all,
since a few days I'm trying to get a useable backup of our server. We have
Linux machine running SAMBA as file and print server for NT clients. The
ammount of storage that shoud be saved is about 25GB upt to 40GB.
As Backup device we use a DAT DDS3 Streamer from seagate, and we would like
to use a simple UNIX tar or GNUtar, in order to restore these tapes on another
UNIX machine, and beeing independent of the used backup-software.
Well, the DDS3-DAT format should (!) be able to store 20GB on each
125meter-DDS3-DAT tape... but I'm trying every day again and again...
I can't get a 15GB share backed up on such a tape, either using the available
/dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 devices...
I'm not an expert in devices, and I don't know which device is for data-
compression or not ?!?
PLEASE, can anyboby help me to get the backup working right ????
Thankx,
Joerg

Go to http://search.cpan.org/ and do a search for 'RPM'. You will find
what you want.

See if 'apropos mouse' shows any utilities for that.
For the console see 'man gpm' and maybe add commandline parameters in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm script.
For X edit /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Being a resident of the United States, I don't know where you can get these in
Europe. You might want to try eBay ( http://pages.ebay.de ), these are sold
there often. I know of some US companies that carry them; I don't know if they
do international shipping so I don't know if they would be any help:

Of course top needs a terminal, but I don't see why ps should. What are
you doing with the output when you get it? Maybe it is a PATH problem or
the current dir is not what you think it is. The following works for me
even as CGI:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
print "Content-type: text/plain\n\n";
my $ps = `/bin/ps ax`;
print $ps;
Or when I did a quick test from crontab:
38 * * * * /bin/ps ax > /home/efflandt/pscron.test

Check file ownership and permissions of ~/.netscape and any subdirectories
as a normal user. Maybe at some point in time you did 'su' instead of
'su -'. Without the - you were using the user's environment (and
.netscape files) instead of root's.

Subject: Ethernet card from Hell (H-P Pavilion 8665C, MPX en5038 card)
Date: 16 Jan 2001 09:21:11 GMT
I am trying to set up a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 8665C for
dual-boot with Red Hat Linux 6.2. This turns out to be much more
of a chore than I would like. Solved one problem with the wacko
video card. Then hit the wall on activating the Pavilion's
ethernet adapter card.
It's allegedly a RealTek 8139, but I have found that the rtl8139.o
driver doesn't work.
So I opened the box. Turns out that the ethernet card's chip
is prominently labelled "MPX EN5038A1". Thanks, Hewlett-Packard.
I then tried ne.o and ne2k-pci.o. Both fail to be loaded with
insmod due to a bunch of whiny "undefined values" that they seem to
have. Setting up ne.o or ne2k-pci.o as eth0 modules loaded into
the kernel doesn't help either.
Before I tear this bloody card out and replace it with something
adult, is there somebody out there who knows a silver bullet for this?
Thanks.

Thanks for the info, Steve, but I'm beginning to suspect either ignorance or
[Windows-based] malevolence from my ISP's part.
I've now switched to KRN, which can be used as an offline newsreader (the only
redeaming factor of what can only be described as "bugware"). If this post
doesn't make it, I'll have to start bugging them.

Well, it's here.
So it's not my ISP's fault then.
Frankly, I'm flabberghasted. I upgraded leafnode to 1.9.18, as suggested, but
it still refused to post my articles.
I'd stick with KRN, were it not for the fact that I utterly despise it; it's
the only program that manages to bring my entire system down (no network, so
telnetting is out of the question).
Oh well...

Onsite I'm trying to setup several linux boxs to print to xerox
docucenter 420st network printer using ipp/cups with little success.
I've tried several things, none of which seems to work.
So several questions:
1) Since it is it's own network node ( sorry can't think of a better
phrase ), how do I specify the URI. I've tried both socket:// and
http://.
2) The name of the printer is "xerox 420st". I suspect much of the
problem is the space in the name, how do I handle that?
I expect something like http://"xerox 420st" but that doesn't work.

I use a script in root's crontab for this. The script fires up
the connection, then does "su - blix" to become user blix, then
fires up fetchmail, and then logs off when it's done. You could
put a similar thing in your rc.local script to make it run at
boot.
