As root, run 'ntsysv' and you can unselect it from running again. This will work
with RH and I guess Mandrake too.

This probably because your version won't support parameters passed via lilo
unless ....... UNLESS support is compiled into the kernel. Try installing
the driver as a module.

/etc/conf.modules

man insmod will provide some details

here is my conf.modules:

alias scsi_hostadapter BusLogic
alias eth0 3c503

yours will most likely be different. :^) Otherwise you can compile a new
kernel with support for your NIC then pass parameters via LILO.

BTW a search on dejanews would have turned up at least 50 similar

It seems that youve already got the X server, so no need to build one.
The reason why you got "no such file or directory" is not the server
binary didn't exist, but the required libaries could not be found. You
need the glibc2.1 libraries, which are not included in Slackware 3.5.
You'll have to install these libraries or stick with the X servers from
Slackware 3.5 (at least XF86_VGA16 should work).

I have a problem regarding this too.

everything works fine as long as I do " insmod ide-scsi" when I am root.

I am able write CDs etc. but I am not able to have this ide-scsi module
loaded automatically.

I am using Mandrake 7.1 and GRUB is my boot loader,
I have specified hdd=ide-scsi in GRUB config file. but I am not really sure
how to handle the /etc/conf.modules file
I would prefer to have a solution where I don't have to recompile my kernel
right now,

Any suggestions are appreciated ,,

Thanks

Can't see the menu text, you say? Does the text just look like a bunch of
black blocks? If so, I had a similar problem with my SiS 5597/5598
video card. Looking at the README.SiS in the XFree86 documentation, it
says:

     This driver was primarily written for the SiS86c201. It also
     works on the 202, 205 and 5597/5598 chips. Support for 6326,
     530 and 620 has been added since.

It's the same driver, so it might be the same problem. I've seen this
text-rendering problem on XFree86 3.3.4 and after, though I haven't tried
the new 4.0 version yet. The only solution I have found is to go back
to using XFree86 3.3.3.x, which I got off of my Slackware 4.0 disk.

Hrm, I thought the Uk used NET3? At least, that's what my Cisco router thinks

Edit /etc/conf.modules with your favorite text editor, and find the line
that says "scsi_hostadapter". Remove that line, and replace it with this
line:
   alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
This will force loading of the ide-scsi module whenever a "SCSI" device is
accessed, which is what you want unless you have a real SCSI bus
somewhere.

Information of the conf.modules file can be found by doing "man
conf.modules", naturally.

Seems logical...

Where can I get the glibc2.1 files? I'd rather upgrade.

The older servers don't recognise my VGA card, and go into
320X200 mode (ugh!).

This still doesn't explain why the three files of source code
(45meg+!!) have not actually built a new XF86_... server. Anywhere.
(remember, the older one has the old date on it, circa 1998)

Subject: I/O flushing on small files
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 23:38:46 GMT

I have a problem with programs not seeing data in files, and I wonder if
anyone might have the best solution (I have a workaround, but it doesn't
make much sense).

Take, for example the following scenario (sourcecode included)...

A program is constantly writing to the same position in a file (of
length 40 bytes).
A server is constantly reading from the same position in the same file.

Even though the client is flushing after every write, the server does
not see the updated data.
However, if the server itself flushes after the read, it does.

It doesn't make sense. Any ideas?

Notes: if the buffersize is changed to be over 4K, then the problem
disappears (which seems to make some kind of sense as it looks like a
buffering problem).

Compiler:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.66/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)

Linux Redhat 6.2.

Client Sourcecode...

// cc -o client client.c
#include <stdio.h>
main()
{
  FILE *fd;
#define SZ 40
  char str[SZ];
  int counter = 0;

  fd = fopen("FLUSH_TEST", "w+b");
  if (fd == NULL) exit(2);

  bzero(str, SZ);
  while (1) {
    sprintf(str, "Counter: %ld", counter++);

    (void)fseek(fd, 0L, SEEK_SET);
    fwrite(str, sizeof(char), SZ, fd);
    fflush(fd);
    printf("Client: %s\n", str);
    sleep(1);
  }
}

Server sourcecode:

// cc -o server server.c
#include <stdio.h>
main()
{
  FILE *fd;
#define SZ 40
  char str[SZ];

  fd = fopen("FLUSH_TEST", "w+b");
  if (fd == NULL) exit(2);

  bzero(str, SZ);
  while (1) {
    (void)fseek(fd, 0L, SEEK_SET);
    fread(str, sizeof(char), SZ, fd);
    // Putting in this flush is my workaround. WHY??
    //    fflush(fd);
    printf("Server: %s\n", str);
    sleep(1);
  }
}

Subject: Dealing with power failures and building a new computer
From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 23:59:58 GMT

I want to build a computer that will run Linux and do low volume
webserving. It will need to be able to deal gracefully with power
failures.

Some UPSs can connect to the computer in some way to tell the computer
to shutdown when the UPS is getting low. Can they bring the computer
back up again? If so, what Are the top three brands and models I
should be looking at? I only need about 20 minutes worth of backup
power for an ATX based system. No monitor will be on.

Also, can anyone recomend the best brand and source for a Linux
compatible motherboard? I only need a single CPU, 128MB of RAM should
be enough, CPU should be at least as good as a PII 300. If networking
and video can be included on the board, that will be fine. The
machine will be a server, so cheapest possible video and a good 100BT
NIC is desired. I know SCSI is prefered for servers, but I know I can
get away with an IDE drive and IDE CD-ROM. It doesn't take much to
service a fraction of a T1. And IDE is a lot cheaper.

I would like to put the whole works in a compact ATX case with
adequate power supply that is reliable.

If there are inexpensive complete systems that can match the quality
and price of something I build from parts, I would like to know about
them. I am looking for a sub $1000 system. This will not be a
mission critical box that requires hot swapping the motherboard or
anything along those lines. A desktop PC type system will handle the
load just fine.

Administration will be over LAN or SSH once the machine is configured,
so I would like something that won't complain about a missing keyboard
when it powers up.

Think low volume, inexpensive web server with lots of disk space and
reasonable memory + CPU and you have a picture of what I am looking
for.

Thanks.

PS.  If you don't like cross-posting, I follow comp.os.linux.misc.
