No, it's a DVD-RAM.

How would you create a filesystem on a DVD-RAM? UDF doesn't seem
ready yet, so I'm using either ext2 or fat32.

Hi,

I am very new to linux and have installed RedHat 7.1. I've gotten quite a
bit accomplished so far (got my NIC working, Samba, configured apache, even
got httpd moved into the right runlevel so it starts when I boot..)

I want to set up the ftp server so that is starts when my machine starts (in
runlevel 5).

The problem is, when I run ntsysv I do not see ftpd in the list. Does it
have a different name, or do I need to somehow add ftpd so that ntsysv knows
about it? What is the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance..

You have to use */sbin/chkconfig*.

Dear Sir:

I use the Escalade cards in several _heavily_ loaded servers with great
success. I would strongly reccomend these cards to anyone - and their
support is very good. I haven't tried their new 7000 series yet, but am
looking forward to it.

Subject: Compile kernel in rescue mode

It looks like I will recompiling a new kernel (2.4.5) sometime, from Redhat
2.4.2 which came with Redhat 7.1. This should fix a problem I've been
having with my VT82C686B southbridge controller and the kernel. I can't
boot into Linux, unless I use the Redhat rescue mode. This mode
automatically mounts my hard drive to /mnt/sysimage. I'm planning on
burning the Linux Kernel source to a CD-R disk in Windows, and then grabbing
the kernel from there, and re-compiling in Linux.

When I re-compile in Linux, what extra things do I need to be careful about
since I am not in the regular form on Linux (whatever that means). Do I
need to do anything with chroot?

I mean, compiling the kernel sounds easy if you can boot into your system.
But I'm guessing I'll have to do something different in rescue mode. I've
already found some limitations of Redhat's rescue mode. For one, I can't
see man pages.

OK Seems I have found the problem.

When you put hosts files in service.switch sendmail either

a) fails to find your host in the /etc/hosts file or
b) does the reverse DNS lookup anyway.

I discovered this by installing named on my Linux box and then setting up forward
and reverse zone files for my internal network (My client machine was the only
host in it - everything else pointed to the Linux box itself), altering
resolv.conf to
look at the local hosts as the name server and then finaly putting: hosts dns
files in the service.switch file.

After that no more delay and nslookup works fine. So either way it seems the
solution is to have the reverse DNS done anyway with either

a) a valid record for your client ip address in the in-addr.arpa on the dns server
for your zone (which is what I did)

OR

b) a really fast timeout on the DNS when it can't find the IP address.

Thanks, it looks like "Small Linux" is what I am looking for. Looks like
the distribution that can run on least RAM and only needs one floppy for
the base system and two extra for X.

If this doesn't work, then maybe Peanut Linux as it looks very robust and
professional, but it is quite a bit heavier.

I'm trying to set up a killfile for suck. I can download messages
quite happily, but there are some I now want to reject.

I want to kill articles based on the From header, an example
being:

From: A. User <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I've tried copying this line exactly as it appears in the headers,
into suckkillfile and suckxover, as well as trying variations like

From:A. User<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: A. User

and so on. But I'm still getting these articles. My suck invocation is

suck news.btinternet.com \
    -hl localhost \
    -n -f -p $SUCK_GROUPS \
    -dd $SUCK_DIR/etc -dm $SUCK_DIR/articles -dt $SUCK_DIR/tmp \
    -W 5 100 \
    -HF /var/lib/news/history -bp -c

Am I missing something?

hi NG!

i have a 98/2000/RH7 triple boot puter. for internet i use doze since i cant
dial-up from RH7... for now. running lspci as root tells me i have a
winmodem US Robotics/3Com. do i stand any chance of making this work in RH7?
what i read in linmodem FAQ is not very encouraging. i tried setting up my
modem in kppp in KDE but no chance. it just shows the dial-up prompt "modem
is ready... connecting" or something like that. then it does nothing. in the
configuration it did query the modem but there are no values in the AT to
AT7 fields. has anyone EVER got successful with this modem in RH7?

my other problem is my screen corruption i havent solve til now. my video is
S3 Savage4 32MB version 1.02 and this is working great in doze. the
corruption is in the Xwindows especially when i move the horizontal/vertical
scrollbars. as a workaround i click refresh desktop in KDE right mouse click
menu. i stay away from Gnome since the corruption there is terrible. in KDE
it is tolerable. i want to download XFree86 4.0.2 then patch this with 4.0.3
or maybe 4.1.0 binaries. to do this would mean to download the driver files
to my dos drives. now how do i access them from Linux? im just a F*!@#
newbie but i know how to cd to my mnt directory and select floppy or cdrom.
kewl. i have an inkling the command is mount then specify the hdx
directories. i need help here guys. i know i must be su to do this. this is
no problem. im having a hard time understanding the mount man page. can
anyone spell this out in plain english?

im thinking of capturing the corruption display in my KDE desktop and saving
this in png and post this in the web. the print screen key in the keyboard,
will this work in Linux? there is a graphics program in KDE but it doesnt
capture the corruption display. anyone can give me tip on this?

whoa, sorry for this long story. but i need all the help i can get. i really
am serious to make Linux my no.1 OS and no. 2 for the rest. TIA.

Subject: Re: Writing an OS from scratch
Date: 12 Jun 2001 20:25:07 GMT

I've found that even the basic concepts that's used in practice is hard
to come by. For example, here's some issues that are bugging me:
        1. When the machine boots up on say a floppy, it's told to automatically
to read the first sector (boot sector) for instructions and load them
into memory and then execute it. Is this correct? If so, what are the
requirements for the instructions and what kind of tools are available
to compile and put it on the floppy? (Small wonder how the FIRST
OS gets started without any existing OS..)

        2. After executing the above instructions, it goes to the "IPL", what is
it exactly? Could it be a program that say loads up a commandline
interpreter?

        3. What must be done for example, just to print a Hello World on the
screen? (I suppose that means some kind of manipulation with the video
           memory to form the text)

        4. I am guessing that the bootloader part is the only thing that must be done
in assembly, but I am thorougly confused on when OS developmenet crosses
over
to C. Given it's a higher language, where does its compiler come from in the
first place? Does one simply get a compiled version for the targe machine
and
load it on? What exactly happens?

confused and curious...

Go to linuxdoc.org and see the font section.
Couple things you can do to deal with Netscape font explained there.
1. You can put some lines into your .Xdefaults, that will increase the font
size in NS.
2. You can configure to make True Type Fonts works w/ Linux... (I prefer
