You have installed Linux in an extended partition:
hda1: First HD, primary partition
hda2: First HD, extended partition
hda5: First HD, first logical partition in the extended p. (hda2)
hda6: First HD, second logical partition in the extended p. (hda2)

Scribbling furiously, Marcm managed to write....
: If a filename.tar.gz is commonly referred to as a Tarball, then is a
: filename.tar also commonly referred to as a Tarball?, (or is it just the gz
: compressed tar file that is the Tarball?).
TYPICALLY SPEAKING, .tar.gz file are referred to as tarballs; however,
as it is just simple convention, there is no real "right" or "wrong".
Additionally, it's relatively rare that a file that is tar'ed won't be
gzip'ed. That is not to say you won't come across that, but I'd say in
>95% of the time, a .tar file will also be gzip'ed if it is made
available on the web.

Subject: how to redirect serial port
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 13:16:01 GMT
Hi,
I have a stream of text alarm, with hex chars imbedded, data which is
sent, like or not, to the serial port.
I would like (very much) to capture this output and send it to a file.
So for testing i have this:
#!/usr/bin/ksh -x
while [ 1 ];
do
echo "fredXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXi\n" > /dev/ttyS0
sleep 1
done
This fredXX data is visible on the serial port..
cat /dev/ttyS0 > /tmp/alarm.log
But alarm.log stays firmly at zero length.
I was wondering why?
Any suggestions?
TIA
Tony

Subject: Sawfish, and rows and columns in workspaces
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 14:30:40 +0000
I am rather confused about the way Sawfish handles virtual workspaces.
In general, I use 4 virtual desktops. Now what is the difference between
specifying 4 as the minimum number of workspaces that may exist, and
setting the number of columns and rows of each virtual workspace to 1,
versus setting the minimum number of workspaces that may exist to 1 and
setting the number of columns and rows in each virtual workspace to 2?
Basically I don't understand what the difference is between having 4
virual workspaces with 1 row and column, and having 1 virtual workspace
with 2 rows and columns. Is there any difference in memory overhead, or
performace?
Thanks in advance,
Darren

Hi. I'm running a Linux nfs server, using
knfsd 1.2.2
kernel 2.2.5
The nfs server crashes randomly, and it seems that
it needs to be restarted when this happens ( probably because it's
not a userland program ... which would be OK if it wasn't such a POS )
Is there a maintained userland version available ? I'd rather not
pollute the kernel space with this kind of trash.
Any ideas about what I should do to get NFS working well enough that
I don't have to check up on it to see if it's still running every
few minutes ? ( OK, I'm exaggerating. It only crashes a few times
a week )

Looks to me like you upgraded an old system? Are there any other entries
in the lilo.conf have you rerun lilo to make it aware of any changes?
What exactly fails when you try insmod?
The fact that lsmod reports nothing isn't uncommon. I hardly ever use
modules. I compile most stuff into the kernel.

For some reason, you appear to have the default Red Hat 6.0 kernel
installed as well as the Red Hat 6.2 one. Have you performed an
upgrade, rather than a fresh installation? If you do
`rpm -qa | grep kernel'
what output do you get?
The PCMCIA modules are in the kernel-pcmcia-cs package, and they will
only work with a kernel of the same version. If the 2.2.14-5 kernel
is installed, then check whether there is an entry for it in
/etc/lilo.conf (and chech that the kernel really is there in /boot ).
Run /sbin/lilo, and you should be able to boot from it form the LILO:
prompt by choosing the appropriate label (type TAB to get a list of
the options). You will now be able to use your PCMCIA modules.
If the kernel is not installed, or if you're concerned about security
(and you should be), you should upgrade to the latest kernel. Have a
look at the Red Hat support pages under security updates.

Subject: Choppy IDE performance with 2.4.test1
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 13:30:10 GMT
I'm using the 2.4-test1 kernel and have noticed that my IDE performance
is pretty poor.
When I do an operation that reads and writes quite a bit to the disk
(l3dec), I'm seeing some lag. It's actually to the point where the
performance of the entire machine is getting affected. The mouse
doesn't respond like it should, and when I move in and out of windows
the slowness is quite noticable.
As l3dec is decoding a MP3, it pauses after every couple hundred
frames. The pause directly relates to when the rest of the system slows
considerably.
In 2.2.16, l3dec does not pause at all (on a 30,000+ frame song).
Are there any issues regarding the new 2.4 series of kernels with IDE
perforamnce?
Thanks.

What vintage motherboard? Does it support so large a hard drive? Have you
got it working in Windows? Did you have to load a BIOS extension file in
the MBR?

And why on earth should in.ftpd (or wu. or pro. for that matter) run as
root? It's relatively normal for them to run the normal user who called
them. That way user johndoe can't do nasty things like overwrite
/etc/shadow.
As root,
chmod 644 /etc/ftpaccess
to fix at least that problem.

Hi,
I'm trying to set up tcpdump so that a non root user can run it. The man
page indicates that "Under Linux: You must be root or it must be installed
setuid to root." I've done the following to install it setuid:
su root
chown root:root /usr/sbin/tcpdump
chmod a+s /usr/sbin/tcpdump
So the file looks like this:
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 197232 Jul 6 14:28 tcpdump
However, when I try to run it as a non-root user, I get:
tcpdump: socket: Operation not permitted
Suggestions?

Maybe some of these disks I have, have previously been formatted in some
perverse way that confuses imm or some other driver. They all work fine
under dos98, though.

Well, to appease you and my computer, I'm going to try reformatting all
my disks under dos98 and see what happens ;)
Incidentally, you should have seen the problems I had a few months ago
when I tried to use a SCSI zip drive. Worked fine under windows, under
linux the filesystems on my hard disks (!!) started to become corrupted!
(They did share the same SCSI controller mind you, but still..)
thanks, and if you don't hear from me again, that means low-level reformatting
under dos98 did the trick...
