Sorry flatfish, he wasn't asking for lame ass jokes -

The laptop no doubt came with windows, he is asking
for some info on getting the pcmcia ethernet card up
and running in Linux.

ifconfig won't load the drivers for the ethernet card
unless they have been made known to the system.
Check the file /etc/modules.conf and see if there is
a line containing the string "eth".

If not, the module has to be configured -

The Red Hat web site has excellent documentation
on this, as does the install guide that comes with RH.

If in doubt, consult one of the linux help groups -

exec executes a command and never returns. Therefore your login
terminates there. Is that really what you want to do?

1) Disconnect the system from the Internet.
2) Find out how the cracker got in. If you don't do this, any other
steps you may take may have no effect, since you'll just be
compromised again. Start your search by checking for exploits at
sites like http://www.cert.org and http://ciac.llnl.gov. You should
also check your distribution maintainer for information on security
updates to packages. Note that installing security updates is almost
always a good idea, but you shouldn't assume that installing a bunch
of security updates will necessarily fix the core problem. It could
be a bug that's fixed in some update you don't get, a
   misconfiguration, etc.
3) Back up your entire system. It's probably best to make a separate
backup of the user data files, since you'll end up restoring them but
   not the other files.
4) Completely erase the hard disk.
5) Re-install the system, either from a backup made before you were
cracked or from original installation CD-ROMs.
6) Fix the problems identified in step #2.
7) Install a firewall, if you don't have one already. Yes, sendmail can
be made to work behind a firewall, but depending upon the TYPE of
firewall, you may need to explicitly configure it.
8) Install an intrusion detection tool like Tripwire.
9) Restore user data files.
10) Restore the system's Internet connection.

Yes, this is all a pain. You may be tempted to take a less
labor-intensive approach, but there really is no way to be sure you've
eliminated all trace of the intruder until you completely wipe the
system and re-install it from scratch. You'll help yourself immensely
by reading up on security issues, at the above or various other Web
sites or in books on security. (I've got a few security book
suggestions at http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/books-network.html.)

I'm not a big sendmail fan myself, but it does have one big advantage
for most Linux users: It comes with most Linux distributions. (A couple
of notable exceptions: Debian and its derivatives ship with Exim, and
Mandrake ships with Postfix.) This means that sendmail is up and running
with little or no effort on most systems. If the mail server
configuration needs serious changes, then it might be worth the hassle
of removing sendmail and installing and configuring qmail, Exim,
Postfix, or possibly something else. OTOH, if you've got all the tools
to modify the sendmail m4 scripts and recompile them, sendmail
configuration isn't too tricky, either. The trouble is that some
distributions omit this stuff from a basic installation, so you've got
to track it all down -- which isn't really all that difficult, but it's
a lot of stuff for a newbie to figure out.

The standard kernel drivers for the VIA sound chip are pretty weak, in
my experience, although I've not tried the ones from 2.4.x kernels. (I
have tried them in some 2.3.x kernels, though, as well as 2.2.x
kernels.) In my experience, the ALSA drivers
(http://www.alsa-project.org) work much better. The main drawback is
that the ALSA drivers are a pain to compile, install, and get working.
Be sure to read the instructions, and pay attention to details like
enabling sound after loading the drivers (the mixer defaults to a muted
setting).

You can't easily put "hdparm" into the kernel; it's a user-space
program. The standard place to put such commands is in
/sbin/init.d/boot.local (SuSE) or /etc/rc.d/rc.local (RedHat, derived)
or create a new script that executes the command(s) and put that script
into the SysV or BSD init script layout (Slack, Debian).

You should also consider -c1 , -u1 , and -m16 for your hdparm command.
With nothing, I get 7M/sec, with (c1, u1, m16), I get 12M/sec, with (c1,
u1, m16, d1) I get 20M/sec. So it's probably worth it. HTH,

Although, the suid bit is typically ignored for scripts, you can use:

#!/usr/bin/suidperl

in the first line of a Perl script to honor the suid. However, it is very
security concious so you will have to make sure that any input is
untainted. If you edit the script at all you will need to reset the suid
on the script.

To change to another user other than the suid effective user ($>) or real
user ($<), it would have to be running suid root.

For more about untainting see: perldoc perlsec

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: First impressions of RH7.1 beta
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 03:57:20 GMT

I got a hold of the $4 Cd's for RH7.1 beta from LSL.com and put them
on an extra partition over the weekend. I did a straightforward
"Gnome Workstation" install. (I still prefer text mode for the
install) Just a few observations:

1. Gnome

With RH6.2 I would install Helix Gnome to get the latest-greatest
desktop stuff, but the Gnome packages that come with RH7.1 is very
complete, and I really don't feel like I need to get Helix(Ximian) for
it. The Raleigh/Crux combo looks great. I've read that this may
become the default look for the next version of Gnome... and I agree
it should!

2. JDK

Supposedly JDK1.3 works with kernel 2.4, but I'm having problems.
I'm using the same Jdk1.3 rpm file I was using on my 6.2 setup (and
same classpath) but when I just try to compile Helloworld, I get:

% javac Helloworld.java
/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin/javac: /usr/bin/cut: No such file or directory
/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin/i386/native_threads/javac: error while loading
shared libraries: libjvm.so: cannot load shared object file: No such
file or directory

..and yet if I do: "which javac"
I get: /usr/java/jdk1.3/bin/javac

Any suggestions?

3. ppp

Weird. I used the RH Dialup Config tool (frontend to WvDial) the same
as before. It connects.... and a check of /var/lib/messages shows
that it's connecting to my ISP, but Mozilla just waits after putting
in a URL, and trying to telnet to my shell account from the Terminal
just waits until it eventually gives back: "Host name lookup failure"
It's as if it's connected, but nothing will go through. The last 2
lines in /var/lib/messages shows this:

Feb 13 21:36:57 localhost pppd[1568]: Exit.
Feb 13 21:36:57 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0

Any suggestions here too? (I'm just using the default kernel... I
guess I gotta compile it in?)

4. MySQL

MySQL is now included with RH, and I gave it a try for the first time.
I installed just the main MySQL rpm and the MySQLclient rpm, but the
command to install " mysql_install_db " gave back a strange message to
include this with "make install" (don't remember exactly, and can't
find a log message) and safe_mysqld wasn't even there! I removed
these RH-compiled packages and then downloaded the same ones from the
mirrors on MySQL.com... which worked just fine. Better to use the
rpm's from MySQL.com instead of the ones on the RH Cd's.

5. Iomega PP zip drive.

I used the same lines as before in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
   insmod parport
   insmod parport_pc
   insmod ppa
as well as made a /mnt/zip as before, but I'm getting "mount:
/dev/sda4: unknown device". Checking DejaNews (just before it was
Googlized) it seems others are having problems with their PP zips too.
(Suggestions?)

Oh well... I guess that's why it's called "beta" :)

One suggestion for RH: I think mozilla is supposed to release version
0.8 any day. Maybe it's time retire NS4.x and make Mozilla the
default browser now. That's all for tonite.

Compile a command into the kernel? Put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
(preferably with full path to hdparm in case it is not in the PATH).

Hi all,
I just purchased a new 60GB Western Digital HD. It's an ATA/100 IDE drive
and
I want to run it on my motherboards (Tyan Trinity S2380 and a Athlon 650)
ATA/66 controller - is this possible? I know an older drive can run on a
newer controller but I'm unsure about it the other way.

Also, will SuSE 7.0/7.1 Pro have a problem with it? I plan on having it set
up to have SuSE, FreeBSD, and Peanut Linux running on it to start and then I
plan on adding Slackware and Debian in a couple of months.

I guess I will be surprised if the answer is no with the backward
compatibility issue. I do have a CMD ATA/100 PCI Card but I don't believe it
has any Linux drivers at this point. At least not that I have found.
Thanks,
Mordak

It's certainly not my business, however, I rarely, if ever, login as root.
su usually does all the work I need. With that said, something sounds
seriously broke if you can't use useradd to create additional accounts.

In any case, it's not really that hard to create a user account without
these canned measures. A few changes to /etc/passwd and /etc/group, create
the home directory, some permission changes, and you should be done...

As far as only being able to run netscape as root - I've never heard that
- not saying it hasn't been said, but the whole idea seems preposterous
to me.

Again, just my $0.02...

You should have no problem. The HDD will just run a ATA/66 speed. I
run a ATA/66 HDD on a ATA/33 controler and have no problem. Also an
interestng side note is that, according to Anandtech.com there is all
most no speed difference between and ATA/100 and ATA/66 drives and

Hi,

I'm new to Linux and am trying to compile 2.4.1, but keep getting the
message:

"In file included from /usr/local/linux/include/linux/raid/md.h:51,
                 from init/main.c:25:

/usr/local/linux/include/linux/raid/md_k.h:39: warning: control reaches
end of non-void function make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1"

and the compile keeps crashing. If I comment out the body of the
function 'pers_to_level', compile goes a little longer, but then crashes
on another warning. Shouldn't the compile complete, regardless of
"warnings"? Any suggestions?

I'm on an Athlon/K7 system, running Red Hat 7.0.

Thanks for any help!

Subject: Damian's talk next week -- at AMNH!

We have gotten very lucky all of a sudden.

The American Museum of Natural History has been good enough to give us the
use of one of their theatres for Damian's talk next wednesday.

Details:

Damian Conway speaks on Lingua::Romana::Perligata
AMNH - Linder Theatre
7-9pm, Wednesday the 14th of February.

I suggest everyone try to show up on time, as damian tends to do a good
deal of talking and we'll want to get as much of that in before they throw
us out. :-)

Directions and information about the museum can be found at
http://www.amnh.org/welcome/admission.html
(although there is no admission for this event).

Everyone will have to come in the security entrance, on the first floor,
Central Park West side, down the driveway UNDER the main stairway. The
Linder Theater is on the same floor.

Fortunately the museum is located within reach of food and such, to which
we should be adjourning to afterwards.

Many thanks to the Museum for allowing us to use their facilities, and a
particular thank you to Rachel Rawlings for making this happen.

See you all there!
