Hi.
I am trying to get fortune to work in a startup script.
Before putting it in a script, I thought I would run it from the command
line.
When I ran it in Bash, I got the error message that "command not found".

I went to the directory where the fortune command was (it is marked
executable), and still got the same error when I ran it.

I re-installed the RPM from Redhat 6.2 (had to force reinstall it
because it said it was already present).
Still the same answer.

If I go to the directory where thefortunes are kept (which is different
from where the fortune executable is (by default, I didn't change it) ,
and double-click one of them, the fortune comes up.

Any ideas? I know I will have to put it in the profile script (i think),
but it should run from the command line.

That is an excellent point, and I guess I should clarify myself.

If my job is "self-contained", then that leaves me free time outside of
work to fiddle and prod and tinker (and perhaps even fiddle, prod and
tinker with stuff I'm working on at work). That's actually what is
happening with my job now: work stays at work, home becomes playtime.

But I do agree that a person should be continually challenged, even at
work. That's what makes the work fun.

Stephen.

Slackware Linux (http://www.slackware.com/) _used to_ provide an
install that would run directly from the CD. Since I never used it, I
cant tell you either how well it ran, or if the latest Slackware
releases support it. I can tell you that I last saw it on Slackware
3.3 (I've since upgraded to Slackware 7.0).

Put /usr/games in your PATH variable or execute /usr/games/fortune
If you have any spare time, read an introduction to UNIX shells. ;-)

If the lilo boot loader was put in the master boot record, lilo
should boot from the hard disk and of course lilo.conf can be
set so one has a choice. It sounds as if the lilo boot loader
was put instead in /dev/hda3. In that case, that partition would
have to be made the active partition.

You can uninstall windows 98. The uninstall program will reset the mbr to
what it was when the installation started.

Or , you will have to change things so that you have a /boot paritition with
the linux kernel and lilo in it.
Set it to active, and lilo will work.
Then put in another primary partition, make it as active and put in dos on
that. Install win 98 on this one. when all is done, set the /boot partition
as active, and edit lilo.conf to include the win98 partition.

hope this helps.

To actually delete Linux from the disk, you will have to use
fdisk. You may have to call it with the had drive device,
e.g., /dev/hda, as argument. Then use the enclosed help to
figure out how to delete the Linux partitions.

/sbin/lilo -u
is normally used to remove the lilo boot loader from the master
boot record. If it doesn't work for some reason, try booting
from a DOS/Windows startup floppy disk and running
fdisk/mbr
This is an undocumented feature of the DOS fdisk command which
should restore the master boot record (without changing the
partition table).

Strange.
I had a 500 MB drive slowly filling up . So I moved everything onto a 2.5
GIG drive using cp. For the first 2 minutes, I was hand copying files and
changing the user and group ID's . Then I got tired of it and checked the
man pages.

I moved all of it into new partitions using cp , and all I had to do was
a) /etc/fstab had to be changed .
b) Rerun lilo for the new drive.

Of course, the computer was in *single user* mode while all this was done.

Hi Linux users!
Was browsing through Award BIOS setup on motherboard that I intended to
buy when I came to "Ctrl+Alt+ +/-" as a way to
change the "Turbo" status.
OK I know this from past, but to find it on mobo which boasts 112M bus
clock was a little odd.
Anyway, how would this affect the changing of resolution in X-windows
and what will respond to it - mobo speed or screen or both?
Thanks for answers...

HardcoreLinux [ http://www.hardcorelinux.com ] has a new internet
promotional tool called Linux Website War! It's designed to promote
small Linux and geek sites.

Webmasters of small and new Linux/geek websites with little or no
public visibility to go head-to-head in a fun elimination style battle,
pitting their own promotion and marketing skills against other small
Linux and geek sites! Here's the skinny:
Every week each site's traffic and votes are tallied, and the site with
the least points is out! This process of elimination continues, week by
week, until only one site is left standing. The webmaster who manages
to collect enough visitors and votes and stave off elimination is the
winner and has his/her site's banner shown on every competing site's
front page.

Linux Website War provides an environment for website alliances and
healthy competition between webmasters while promoting their sites and

Hello all,

I recently upgraded from RH 6.0 to 6.2 and am tying to recompile the
kernel. The reason is that I had been having printing problems and
learned thatinexplicably
printer support had been disabled in the kernel. Once I re-enabled it, I
attempted to recompile but got the following error:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.2.14/include -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2

init/main.c: In function "start_kernel':
init/main.c:1273: too few arguments to functon 'dcache_init'
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1

This is the first "step" in the compilation process, but doesn't get
past it. I run a pentium 120 w/ 64 megs of RAM and a relatively full 1.2
Gig HD. I would imagine that something else was changed in the kernel
configuration that I'm not aware of that's bringing this on. On a
separate note, I was also wondering how to clean up my HD so that I can
get rid of unneeded stuff that may have been left over since the
upgrade. I have virtually NO data on the HD besides what's been put
there by the RH
installation CD's, but instead of taking up only ~ 800 MB of space, the
system now takes up around a GB or so. I would appreciate any
ideas.Thanks in advance.

First you need to add a machine account to your /etc/passwd file and after
this, you need to add the machine account also to your smbpasswd file. If
you are using samba 2.07, the samba book is readable via swat utility. There
are all informations that you need. A good idea is man smbpasswd :-)

try to set the security to user in your smb.conf file.
