I'm trying to install jpilot on my debian system, which involves
having gtk+ 1.2.0 or greater and therefore glib 1.2.0 or greater. I
downloaded source for both and installed; glib seems to have
installed fine into /usr/local/lib, but when using configure gtk+
doesn't find it. If I force configure for gtk+ to assume it's there,
then the jpilot configuration doesn't find gtk+:

checking for gtk-config... /usr/local/bin/gtk-config

*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means

When you installed Windows 98 it overwrote the mbr (master boot record) from
lilo to the one Win98 uses. All you have to do is re-install lilo and you
should be fine. Not sure why Partition Magic doesn't see your linux
partition, either it reads the partitions by the mbr or it's too old to
recognize ext2 partitions?

You should be fine, just re-install lilo from a linux boot-disk.

Make clean remove all binary files that have been generated thus far, this
includes the ones you just produced in 'make dep'. This means that 'make
bzlilo' has to recompile them AGAIN. This will make kernel compilation take
a lot longer. In other words, clean is undoing your dep so bzlilo has to
redo it. Anyway, just an FYI,

Subject: Printing woes on RedHat 6.2
Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 19:33:37 GMT

Hi all,

I'm using RedHat 6.2 with the default kernel of 2.2.14-5.0, and have
constant problems with printing. The box is used as a samba server for
a company of 60+ people, and everything works great, except occasionally
one of the printers no longer accepts print jobs.

Users are attempting to print over Samba, but I get the same problem if
I attempt to print from the linux box its self. Basically, I call lpr
like this:

lpr -P hp1100 [filename]

which works for a week or so. But then it decides to quit, and it comes
back with this error:

lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon

The only way out of it, that I've found, is to reboot the box. I've
tried restarting lpd, but that doesn't make any difference. I remove
all the lock files and all of the queue files, but that doesn't help
either. Every new job I submit gives me that error until I reboot.

Obviously, rebooting the main file server for 60+ people is not
acceptable on a regular basis!

Can aybody help?

Thanks in advance!

Get an MS-DOS disk with the fdisk command on it.

The type fdisk /mbr

used IP-Masquerade for doing that, it works great with one small exception.

I can't sent email to certain accounts (I use my school email account)

anyway something like that. I believe it has something to do with
spaming, but that's all I know so far.

Does any of you have any idea of what's happening?

Make dependancies does have anything to do with binaries. All it does is
looks and makes sure all the files are available that are required to make
the build.

Making dependancies first is SOP with kernel building.

For a super-clean start, including and .config files lying around, use "make
mrproper".

You are very correct in your statement about taking much longer to do a
build after using the kernel source for earlier builds but it shouldn't
effect the first build because there should be no pre-existing binaries.

Why I was suggesting the first poster do a "make clean" is because it is my
recent experience that a fresh test7 kernel source will build a bad kernel
UNLESS it is first cleaned. I have not looked into what the problem is it's
just my experience to date.

You will need to reinstall linux since it will be on a new system. You
don't need to reformat the partitions before moving. Put the drive in the
new machine and let the bios find it. Then put the cdrom in and run install.
You should then see the list of available partitions. You can just use the
same partitions, but you should initialize them at that time to get the old
stuff off. If you have a separate /home directory, you should be able to
keep that, but I think it would be best to reinstall the rest.

Wow, that looks real bad!
Seems to be a page fault, maybe a pointer to a memory buffer which isn't
checked or so or an other memory fault, don;t know what could have caused
this :-(

Not that i know of, probably a shell script using find and awk or sed will
help you out here, i never really used the programs but i'm sure the man
page will explain how to create these difficult looking search strings for
these programs..

Subject: Apache/ipchains problem...

We are using ipchains to forward public.ip:80 requests to private.ip:9000
requests. This works most of the time, but on some occasions, the apache
running on private.ip:9000 sends a hardcoded "301 the object has moved" to
public.ip:9000 (where there is no server listening). It seems to be an
apache problem, but we're not sure.
Anyone have any ideas, or a better place to look for help.

Thanks,
Josh

Subject: Re: Can Linux be installed from a Compaq Backpack cdrom?
Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 22:58:23 +0200

I think you have to compile a kernel with backpack support build into it for
that if it isn't recognized as a module ( try 'lsmod' and/or 'dmesg')
(to recompile kernel do a cd /usr/src/linux; make menuconfig, after that a
make dep clean all modules modules_install install)
Reboot the build kernel to see if it is detected using the above methods, if
so boot that kernel instead of the installation one and start install.
Or you can create a network, share your cdrom drive and do a network install
on the thing and then worrying about the backpack support later.

If some of the letters appear LILO tries to tell you what went wrong by
letting you count the letters it displayed. You can look up the meaning of
the so formed numbers in the man page or howto.
