In the man pages for lilo.conf I only find:

       message=message-file
specifies a file containing a message that is dis
played before the boot prompt. No message is dis
played while waiting for a shifting key after
printing "LILO ". In the message, the FF character
([Ctrl L]) clears the local screen. The size of the
message file is limited to 65535 bytes. The map
file has to be rebuilt if the message file is
              changed or moved.

How can I use this for a graphical boot-menu like RedHat does in rh7?
What do I miss?

thx,
Rudi Sluijtman.

I use gnumeric for spreadsheets.
If you need something like powerpoint... *shrug*.
But with LaTeX you canproduce some nice slides...

My outgoing (smtp) server requires authentication with username and
password to control spam. So far Netscape is the only linux app that
I've found that will do that. Any others you know of?

Unfortunately the world uses Word, and since I coauthor papers, I have to
use it or something compatible.

I suspect what is happening is that the
typical compile is taking less time than
the refresh interval of top (glibc source
file tend to be small, one function per
file in general). You'll get lots of processes
which are not caught by top because they aren't
running at any of instants at which top queries
the kernel for process stats; so top knows
nothing about them.

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the Linux world that will 100 percent
emulate MSOffice. Nothing at all.

THe Linux toys are a joke. Try them for yourself and see how well your
presentations translate.

When the rest of the world is running Office, why should you run some
half assed wannabe?

Is your job worth it?

Pretty good don't cut it.

It sucks and is even more bloated than MSOffice.

Try "file xxx.sit" and see if it reports it as zip.
If yes then "unzip xxx.sit".

I just discovered this less than a week ago,
it worked for me :-)

I bet you run Slackware. I used to be getting the same error, until I
downloaded the glibc-*.rpm from RedHat, converted it to tgz (rpm2tgz)
and extracted the /usr/share/i18n and /usr/share/locale directories to
overwrite the old ones with the contents of these. After that, all
works fine (only the custom fonts in Gtk themes seem not to want to
work for some odd reason...).

Of course, I suppose I needn't mention you should back up the two
directories prior to attempting to do that...

Subject: Bru and cdrw

I am using the version of Bru that came with Corel linux. It works fine
except in one situation.

If I use this command line:

        bru -cvvvv -s 640M -f - /home/* | cdrecord dev=3,0 speed=4 -eject -

it winds it's way though till it gets around the 650 mark and then bru
says something to the effect that "-" is not a directory, shall we
backup "-" y/n

If I press n, it just asks the question again, if I press y cdrecord
aborts and ejects cause the disk is full.

I am under the impression that I should be able to feed it another one
but the script or whatever it is bumps me back to the command line. Any
ideas?

Well, then you probably want to take a look at
-abiword
-StarOffice (BLOATware)
-ApplixWare (payware)

Or you can just distribute your documents as pdf's...

I had that problem with I used the Mandrake Updates icon to update
Perl. That was solved by simply updating locale and locale-en.

However, I also had that problem in FreeBSD and I don't recall if
installing locale solved that completely. In that case it was something
about the C libs not having locale support.
