Subject: minimum shell for ssh/procmail
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 23:34:22 GMT
We have running a NT-network with a sambaserver running under linux. Users
dont need to mess around on the server so they have their shell set to
/bin/false.
But now we want to do some remote-file-access using ssh-win and we want
special mailfiltering for each user using fetchmail/procmail.
I had to recognize that this is not possible with the false-shell. I dont
want to give the users access to a full shell, but they need to perform
the above actions. Anybody knows what this minimalshell needs to do ?
At the moment Ive written a minimal-shell that only reckognizes a exit
and ignores all the other commands. This is sifficient for ssh-
portforwarding (to access the mailserver on the server) but not for
fileaccess or procmail.
thanx,
peter

To remove a file you must have permission to modify the directory
that points to the file. So, check the perms of /usr/bin to see
that you can delete from there.

Hiya-
I have a problem with logging in to the KDE desktop with a RH6.2
-> RH7.0 upgrade.
The KDE login dialog box comes up, and I can enter my username,
but when I am in the password box, it will not accept any input.
At one point I switchdesk'd to GNOME and was able to get past its
login dialog. switchdesk no longer seems to work, but anyhow,
I'm more used to KDE and prefer it, so I'd like to solve this.
(Sorry, GNOME lovers!)
Any one having this particular problem?
Cheers,
Bob L.

I frequently get praise and "how DID you do that?" comments from

A better way may be to use run-parts(8).
run-parts will let you put all your scripts in one directory and have
run-parts execute them one at a time. Doing things this way means you'd
only need a single crontab entry (I'm assuming you run them all at the
same time), and also stops all the scripts running at once.
On my debian system, run-parts is part of the base system (in package
debianutils). Can't help you for other distros.

The closest thing I have experienced is a file which has the "immutable"
attribute set. The error when you try to delete the file is different
then:
root@zaphod# touch foo
root@zaphod# chattr +i foo
root@zaphod# lsattr foo
----i--- foo
root@zaphod# rm -f foo
rm: cannot unlink `foo': Operation not permitted
root@zaphod# chattr -i foo
root@zaphod# rm -f foo

Subject: Need help with dual boot install Win 98/Red Hat 6.2
Date: 17 Oct 2000 00:26:16 GMT
Completely new to Linux, just bought a book with RH 6.2. Followed the
instructions, used FIPs to free up space on my hard drive and then went through
the graphical install on the CD. Linux works fine after the install, but my
Windows partition is unaccessable. Even a DOS boot disk does nothing, a blank
black screen comes up with a flashing curser that does not accept input.
The only way to get back to Windows is to reinstall Linux using the
"partitionless install" feature. After that Win 98 comes up perfectly. The
only problem is that I want to have Linux and Windows on seperate partitions.
I have tried reinstalling Linux with and without LILO and using different
numbers of Linux partitions, the result is always the same, if Linux is
installed on a seperate partition from Windows I am completely unable to boot
to Windows, but as soon as I move Linux back to the Windows partition things
work fine.
It makes no sense to me that I can't even boot from a DOS rescue floppy after
Linux is installed to a seperate partition (I know the rescue floppy is good
because if I unplug my hard drive it will boot the machine to DOS, but with the
hard drive plugged in, I get the same blank screen).
Please Help, this is driving me crazy!

I's not using XMMS on my work system. I'd prefer a solution that
doesn't rely on the player anyways since I don't know where I'm going to
be or what player I'm going to be using.
Hmmm.. here's an idea: could something like this be built-in to shout?
A per-file +/- gain adjustment as a command-line option would work for
me. (I use shout->icecast to stream my tunes out.)

One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be disagreement on how to
handle graphics in rtf. Word 97 puts out one big rtf file with the
graphics embedded in it. StarOffice 5.2 puts out a much smaller rtf
file plus the graphics files as jpg (iirc). The text then has links to
the graphic files. Which means that you lose the graphics when going
between these two products.

I just did the same thing using LaTex and CVS. Only we didn't have to do
the e-mail bit. It was nice being able to merge 3 separate edits at one
time. End result was a camera ready copy. Once up the learning curve,
LaTex is easier to use than Word. It does what you want, not what some
burnt out programmer decided you want to do.

More properly LaTex is typesetting, not word processing. But you can go
directly to press from LaTex. You can only do that with Word if you
don't care what people think of your work.

I have RedHat with Linux kernel 2.2.12. I had installed the kernel which
comes precompiled, but I tried to compile my own.
I have chosen E2FS, chosen APM but not at startup, made bzImage, made
modules, made modules_install, copied bzImage over the old vmlinuz
(after saving a copy), and reran lilo.
At startup, Linux dies with the message,
apm: BIOS not found
request_module[block-major-3]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device 03:02
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02
Does this error message signify anything to anyone?

Because the referees will make nicer comments if your paper looks
professional, i.e. you sent in a typeset copy rather than a cheesy
Word/Powerpoint amateur looking paper. If it looks like you care, then
others assume you do and cut you some slack. They will still go over the
technical content, but the comments will be more helpful and positive.
Such as "Would you consider adding a reference here?" instead of
"Insufficient references, rewrite".

If that is the case the just do the simplest most straight forward
layout you can. Everything will be lost in the translation so any fancy
formatting is a waste of time. Keep it simple and use whatever comes to
hand. All the mentioned wordprocessors can handle that.

Try mtools, the mdir and mcopy commands are designed to allow
DOS-like access to DOS floppy's without mounting them.
[bluster@zephyr]$ mdir a:
will list the dir of a MS floppy, and
[bluster@zephyr]$ mcopy a:*.* /dir/to/copy/files/into
will copy them onto the linux system.

Drag and drop in KDE file manager, or at a shell prompt:
[bluster@zephyr]$ cp file copy-of-file

[bluster@zephyr]$ man cp

I would strongly recommend using the Bastille linux hardening
scripts available through the homepage bastille-linux.org or
download directly (~200KB) from:
http://download.sourceforge.net/bastille-linux/Bastille-1.1.0.tgz
Bastille will activate most of the operating system's built in
security features very effectively, including installing a very
good set of firewall rules. Setup is pretty easy, with lots of
onscreen info about each option.
And version 1.1.0 is optimized for RedHat6.2.
Hope this helps!

Wow. Word must be far worse than I had initially thoought if using it
causes so much brain damage that it renders the user incapable of learning
simple tasks with even a lifetime to do so.
Learning to use LaTeX is certainly no more difficult than learning to use
Word. Provided with a set of LaTeX templates, I've seen people with no

In Redhat linux 6.2 kernel 2.1.14, I want to make my linux firewall
forward ports such that Microsoft gaming Zone can get thru the firwall
from the Win98 machine behind the firewall.
Can someone tell me how you are doing it?

You aren't trying to run wu-ftpd outside of inetd, are you? Because
it needs to run from inetd which sets up the socket for it.

No , SuSE comes with new raidtools, but without new RAID in kernel.
Check the bootup messages. It will say something about 0.36 IIRC.

Subject: Re: what is the most convenient and effective way to backup?
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 01:49:54 GMT
My work tree is mostly ascii text files. Over some 15 years it's grown up
to a little over 100 MB. My practice is to save it zipped onto an LS120
disk -- actually, 2 or 3 of these, duplicates; and I carry one around with
me.
I like the LS120 disks because they are same size as 3.5 in floppies and I
can carry one or two of them in the same small carrier with floppies. My
idea is I don't need the system because I can make a new one if the worst
happens; and then set in my LS120 and in a few minutes I have my whole
original tree back. I do incremental backups between large ones.
All this has paid off once in a big way. A hardware problem crashed my
Linux as it was booting, and I found my whole tree badly munged. Page
after page on the screen of warnings about cross-linked files. I just
killed the whole mess and replaced it from my LS120 backup.
Remember: saved from *15 years* and no way could I do that again. So I
was serious about backups before this happened, but now I'm *really
serious* about backups.

Hi,
I found that many search engines or review sites refer tools to
redhat.com ftp site. but when I tried to download them, I always get
the "Login incorrect" error:
The requested URL could not be retrieved
_________________________________________________________________
An FTP authentication failure occurred while trying to retrieve the
URL: ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/sourcenav/releases/
Squid sent the following FTP command:

and then received this reply
Login incorrect.

Is the redhat.com ftp site available to the public? How can I
download? Thanks.
FYI, here is the two of many urls recent I tried:
ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/sourcenav/releases/
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/powertools/6.1/SRPMS/tkgoodstuff-8.0-8.src.rpm
