Hi,
If you know how the printer filter driver works within Linux,
you will understand what I am talking about here.
I want to use a laser printer which are hooked to the ethernet RJ45
from Linux hosts. A printer can have an IP number. However,
if you use it that way, the Linux lpd simply sends a raw request
to the host, i.e., the printer. In this case, unlike a Linux or
MSWindoes
host, the printer does not have any printer filter software, i.e., the
ghostscript software in the case of a Linux.
So, basically, printing will fail.
What can we do about this? In the case of HP printers, they
provide Solaris JetDirect Software. However, there is no
such thing for Linux.
Thank you.

If "matlab" is a libc5 program, then you need the libc5 versions of the X
libraries (libXt, libX11, etc.). On libc6-based systems (like RH 7), the
versions in /usr/X11R6/lib are the libc6 versions.

Don't mix packaged versions and a recompiled version. First remove the
packaged wine totally. Then use wineinstall to iinstall the selfcompiled
version. And you the recent version or CVS.

The latest version is 1.19.
If it happens only occasionally, then it's a feature, not a problem.
(Newer versions will behave the same.)

Hello,
Can anyone suggest a good site for downloading of Koffice.
I have tried ftp site people.readhat.com, but ended up with lots of RPMs'
unpenetrable depencies, unable to run it on my KDE.
It seems that www.kde.org does not provide official binaries as yet.

If you install the kde2rc2 rpm's, the newest koffice is part of it. KOffice
needs the kde2 and qt2 libs.

On your Linux system, configure the printer settings as if
the printer was on the parallel port. This will result in the
printer filters being set up and an entry in the /etc/printcap
with a part like:
lp:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd ... etc
now change the 'lp=/dev/lp0' part into:
'rm=<host name>:rp=<queue name>'
in order to let lpd contact the print server <host name>
and submit the job to <queue name>.
Good luck,
Roel Brand.

Well, DHCP services are usually very reliable and not a high load on the
server side, so usually there're no problems as long as the hardware
works properly, so I usually overload dhcp services on the most critical
box. This way, even if that box crashes, yes DHCP is lost, but it
doesn't matter sooo much since most (or all, on short networks with only
one server) usability is lost anyway. Again, though I haven't use such
approach, and given that people is not usually turning on and off their
boxes it can be more than enough for redundandy purpouses to have a
second dhcp server turned down mirroring the main one: as soon as you
know the main server is off you can turn on the backup (since, as I
told, lossing the dhcp server for some minutes has usually neglegible
impact on the network functionality).

That's simply untrue. The splitting among MUAs and MTAs has nothing to
do with unices but with a reasonable way to manage electronic mail.
1/ it's perfectly possible to have a MTA/MUA single program (ie. you can
just telnet 25 into sendmail).
2/ The history of e-mail with lots of different protocols and encoding
content justified separating the server2server management from the user
interaction: that's the MUAs age
3/ The MsPC boom with those toy-OSs forced another step in the process:
who to give e-mailing capabilities for OSs unable to manage their own
mail? Here comes POP.
4/ Netscape (Netscape Communicator, I mean, since I *think* you meant it
also) IS NOT a MTA. Full stop.

No: your mail USER agent. Where is it told it has to be graphical?
(and it's good news it has not to be so: who would I manage to convince
my cron daemos to talk to a point-and-click program?).

Then you have an easy solution: stick with OE. (Oh! you tell me you need
Windows just to use OE? Then complain M$, not me). I myself think that
Outlook (not Outlook Express) has a fairly good user interface and
user-side functionality, it is only that I don't want to pay the prize
involved, so I stand with Netscape Communicator and that's all.

There cannot be just a slave on the controller, it's master (and slave)
or single device.
Anyway, is the disc formatted? You cannot mount a drive, you can only
mount a filesystem, so if that's non-existing.....
try fdisk -l /dev/hdd just to see if the drive responds, and try either
dd to see if you can read raw data from it. If there's no data on it
yet, run mkfs on the disc first.

I don't understand much about the technical issues being discussed,
whether netscape is or is not a mta, and so on.
But in my setup, a single user box, netscape can handle email, whatever
acronym it belongs under, with a little configuration that you can get
from your isp. To make sendmail and other such programs work, if the
out-of-the-box configuration doesn't suit you, you have to do some serious
study.
Perhaps there are some, but I haven't seen an email program like pine that
also just takes care of the mail without sendmail or fetchmail. That's
the kind of program I thought the OP was looking for. Something that
specialized in email, but didn't need sendmail/fetchmail for most
single-user box situations.
I know that pine can be configured to treat your isp account as a remote
mail box, but I don't know if it can move the mail to the isp without
something like sendmail.

It may depend on where you have this cron job. If it is in /etc/crontab, it
will run with root authority and (I believe) root's environment (unless you do
something to change it). If you set it up in /var/spool/cron using crontab -e,
it should run with your permissions and the environment you had when running
crontab -e (IIRC).
