Thanks for the suggetions.
I tried but had no luck with "man initrd". What does that line in lilo.conf
do? Anyone?
Specifying init=/sbin/init at the lilo prompt did not start init either. The
boot process still stopped after mounting just the root file systems in
read-only mode, leaving me in a bash shell. It appeared as if none of the rc
files were executed at all.
I did not see any error message or anything out of the ordinary. The last
messagese on the console were:
"VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
change_root: old root has d_count=1
Trying to unmount old root ...okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 60K freed"
Something must be wrong. Was my server hacked? Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi,
When I boot and log into Caldera eDesktop 2.4 as a user, I get a
message saying:
"Welcome to your OpenLinux system!
The X server is not configured yet. Please gather information about
your mouse, video card, and monitor, and run 'lizardx' as root."
Well, I already installed XFree86 4.0.2, and got everything finally
configured for my Toshiba 8100 laptop (savage chipset). I installed
Ximian Gnome as root, I was able to get in to Gmome and use it fine,
and then reboot (just for fun), and to login as myself.
I now only get the term screen (prompt) asking me to login, as gnome
nor KDE doesn't boot automatically, and after logging in as myself and
trying to start gnome by typing "gdm", I get the error message:
"Only root wants to run x^hgdm"
Can anyone help me? How do I get Gnome to boot automatically and so
that a normal user can login from the Gnome login screen?
Regards,
Scott

if not that might be the problem considering that's what the error

Hello,
you can do this with dd, tar or cpio.
There should be manpages for all of them on your box.
Just be sure to keep a hardcopy of your /etc/fstab and fdisk -l,
will make your life much easier in case of hd failure..:-)
Good luck

Hmm.. strange.. i got a celeron 433MHz ,160MB ram.. and a ati rage IIc
videocard..
My experience is that kde2 is just about as fast as my win2k installation on
the same
machine..(though, qt,x,kernel,kde2 are compiled from source...)
Are you sure your linux uses ALL your ram,many times you must add parameters
to the kernel/lilo to enable all your ram..
And, is X configured for your videocard, not some 'generic' driver?

Hello to all Linux users. Some of you guys may have read my plea for
help some of you may not. I am currently completing my master degree in
Information System and I need respondents from all Linus users.
I have adopted a EUCS instrument to aid me in my research. The End User
Computing Satisfaction instrument was formulated by Doll and Torkdazeh
in 1988 and validated by confirmatory factor analysis. The
questionnaire may appear abit confusing but it has been proven an
effective tool in measuring end user satisfaction. Please take the time
to fill out the short 12 question instrument at
http://www.gonzalo.net/satisfaction.htm. All opinions are welcome.
Your help is critical to the completion of my degree.
Assistance will be greatly appreciated. To all those who have filled

Thank you so much John :-))
I did this (for anyone interested):
<?php
// change directory for every file --> omitting leading directories
function tarChanged($filename) {
$parts = split('[/]',$filename);
$nbElem = count($parts);
$chgTo = $chgTo." --directory=";
for ($i=0;$i<$nbElem-2;$i++) $chgTo = $chgTo."".$parts[$i]."/";
$chgTo = $chgTo." ";
for ($i=$nbElem-2;$i<$nbElem;$i++)
$chgTo = $chgTo."".$parts[$i]."/";
$chgTo = substr($chgTo,0,strlen($chgTo)-1);
return $chgTo;
}
$files2compress = "";
$archive2send = "data.tar.gz";
for ($i=0;$i<count($files);$i++) {
$changedDirFile = tarChanged($files[$i]);
$files2compress = $files2compress." ".$changedDirFile;
}
$command_TAR = "tar -czf ".$filename." ".$files2compress;
$out = system($command_TAR,$output);
?>
Where $files = array with each element = filename with full path, e.g.
"/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/13-02-99/file1.txt"
$command_TAR looks like this:
tar -czf data.tar.gz
--directory=/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/ 13-02-99/file1.txt
--directory=/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/ 13-02-99/file2.txt
--directory=/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/ 13-02-99/file3.txt
...
--directory=/data/thisproject/othermachine/ 16-08-01/file1.txt
Yippieh, I'm happy that it works! Maybe it's not the most optimal
code but it works :-))

So you have certaint believes on how the concepts "knowing" and
"believing" are related, do you? :-)
I believe that everything we do or think is based solely on "beliefs"
and value judgments. See "Lila" by the author of "Zen and the Art
of Motorcycle Maintaince" for a pretty good explaination on how I think
the Scientific Method, facts and beliefs relate.
Given your definition of "know" I don't see how the word can be used
at all.
Well, I don't know with perfect certainty, but I believe I can make
it to the coffee machine.

/home/moorse>man -k initrd
initrd (4) - boot loader initialized RAM disk
mkinitrd (8) - creates initial ramdisk images for
preloading modules
pcinitrd (8) - create a PCMCIA initrd ram disk image
Nothing out of the ordinary, RH default uses a initial ram disk.

Well. OK. Then let someone else answer. It's pretty clear from the
rest of your reply that you don't have a clue as to what is going on.
For those who might be able to answer let me rephrase what I said
before ( though I think it is clear what is going on, I think I could
sum it up better ).
One binary file /usr/bin/emacs-20.7. It reads my frame widths and
heights from my .emacs and sizes accordingly. Several other files
which are symbolic links to /usr/bin/emacs-20.7 or are symbolic links
to symbolic links etc. and which have the (local) name emacs
do not size according to my .emacs ( other properties are handled
properly ). When I copy /usr/bin/emacs-20.7 ( after removing
/usr/bin/emacs ) to /usr/bin/emacs and start emacs with the command
/usr/bin/emacs, it does not size properly. When I create a symbolic
link with a name other than emacs to /usr/bin/emacs, and start emacs
with that link it sizes properly.
To put it simply these is something unusual about the string "emacs"
whenever someone starts emacs with that name it fails to load my
properties, whenever I start emacs from a name different than "emacs"
it initialises correctly.
I've checked my ~/.Xdefaults and also /etc/X11/apps-default/Emacs
and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Emacs and those don't help.

Sure is.

Isn't that what learning from experience is all about?
I take what you say, process it and make a value judgment...
Owing you $1000 is very low quality, while owing you nothing
has a higher quality. At least as far financial quality goes.
A quick check of my ethical system ( moral quality )... Nope
can't make any value judgements that indicate I might be obligated
to you.
Check my charity systems... Nope don't have a good reson to give
you $1000 anyway.
So, I believe I don't owe you $1000. A brand new belief.
But here is the important part:
I don't "KNOW" that I don't owe you $1000. Your not a collection
agent from Citibank, are you? Long lost relative?

Switched definitions is what I fear is happening with the
Atheist/Agnostic disscussion.
Sure definitions are arbitrary but, In my opinion, the definitions
of Athiest/Agnostic have been fairly stable for around 100 or so
years. Perhaps even longer.
I don't think it's good to allow a small group to change a definition
to suite it's agenda.
You'll nver find a "cracker" who says he ain't a "hacker".
It appears that some Atheist would rather redefine the situation
to make it look like the "others" have belief systems, while they
do not.
I think it might be related to the belief that Science is not a
set of beliefs.
Gosh too many belief's in one sentence!

3.1.2. Test the CD-image
Linux has the ability to mount files as if they were disk-partitions.
This feature is useful to check that the directory layout and file
access permissions of the CD-image matches your wishes. Although media
is very cheap today, the writing process is still time-consuming, and
you may at least want to save your time by doing a quick test.
To mount the file cd_image created above on the directory /cdrom, give
the command
mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 cd_image /cdrom
Now you can inspect the files under /cdrom - they appear exactly as
they were on a real CD. To umount the CD-image, just say umount
/cdrom.

I do not know about your logic, but I have trouble with your vocabulary.
Telnet is a great security leak because anything you do with telnet can
be sniffed by crackers on the Internet. In particular, everything you
type or anyone types to you can be sniffed, INCLUDING YOUR PASSWORDS. So
you surely want that off. (Use ssh if you need something like telnet.)
Likewise, if all you want to do is use ftp to bring information into
your machine, at your initiation, you do not need to run an ftp daemon
or even permit anyone to use it on your machine. So you can turn that
off also. If all you want to do is run ncftp, or one of its friends, you
can do that with both telnet and ftp off in your /etc/inetd.conf (and if
you have an ftp daemon running, you can, and probably should, turn that
off too, probably in the /etc/rc.d/rc?.d directories if you run a
distribution like Red Hat).
