That line from free is poorly labeled: interpret as total mem used if you
subtract (ignore) mem for buffers & cache, total mem free if you add
(ignore) mem for buffers & cache.
I dont' know the answer to your original question. Maybe the mem is still
occupied even though you deactivated services?

I would like to make backups of my hard drives on multiple CDs.
It seems there are some tools for linux, like cdrecord, but
I do not know if there exist tools which can create bootable CDs.
MS Windows world has some tools capable of this task.
Are there any in linux world?
Since my system is mutiboot with win95, linux6.1, freeBSD, Solarisx86, etc,
each of them taking about 2GB, ideal tool should be able to create bootable
CDs for all of the OSs.
I am not familiar with booting mechanism. So there may be some
special way of creating bootable CDs with cnventional tools like cdrecord.
I would appreciate any pointer/comment.
Thanks in advance.

Why not put the files you want to transfer into a ZIP or a tarball? The
nice thing about archive file formats like those is that they preserve
attributes as well as compressing files and packing many files into one.
Note that WinZip can read tarballs as well as ZIP files.

Compile ssh from source? All the initscripts would do is start sshd at
some point; you can just put "/usr/local/sbin/sshd" into
/etc/rc.d/rc.local for that. I have no idea why ssh requires a glibc
upgrade; I have compiled ssh and openssh on machines with glibc 2.0 and
2.1 with no problems.

cdrecord does not create a bootable CD; it just takes an ISO9660 image
and writes it to a CD. Check the man page for mkisofs, paying attention
to the -b and -c options. The basic idea is that you create a 1.4 or
2.8M floppy image, then specify the name of that image to mkisofs in the
-b option. I don't think you can specify more than one boot image
though. However, if you get the 2.8M image of Tom's RootBoot, you can
make a bootable CD that will boot into a Linux rescue system that has
enough stuff to recover any Linux installation. If you choose an
appropriate format for your backups, you can probably use Tom's to
restore Win9x, *BSD, and Solarisx86 installations as well.
Check freshmeat.net for CD-R backup tools. The 2.8M Tom's image is
available at http://www.toms.net/rb/ .

Is there any commercial Linux-based touch screen restaurant software
that will do the following
1. Accept order entries from multiple workstations for up to guest
tables and large dining parties/banquets
2. Prints guest checks for each table or dining party
3. Accept employee clock-ins and clock-outs for 40-50 employees
4. Maintain cash register and sales totals
5. Provide a variety of other functions, mostly related to payroll. For
example: tracking tips by server.
6. Works on Linux, either SuSE 7.1 or Red Hat
7. Allows remote access to payroll data -- perhaps with the ability to
transmit payroll data directly to a payroll management company
contracted to print payroll checks. Remote access may be accomplished
through a VPN.
8. Can be remotely supported by a restaurant employee and a technical
consultant hired for the purpose
9. Can be evaluated on a trial basis for at least 60 days by at least
3-4 different people in different locations.
10. Can accept the sales and employee data maintained by a certain
Windows-based touch screen restaurant software system (R/Power) and
easily convert it to the new format as and if needed
11.Can be installed and running by the next morning, in time for
breakfast.
Is such an application out there? I'd appreciate being pointed in the
right direction. Please feel free to email me privately if you wish.
Thanks!

I've been using serial terminals on headless boxes for years. I know it worked
with the 2.0 kernels (patched?) and might have worked with the 1.x kernels with
patches, so it shouldn't be a lilo problem. Here's what my Lilo.conf looks
like:
boot=/dev/rd/c0d0
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
serial="0,9600n8"
prompt
timeout=50
message=/etc/lilo.message
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2
label=l242
append="console=ttyS0,9600"
read-only
root=/dev/rd/c0d0p2
Note that the 'serial' options are in quotes and there is a speed after the
console device.

man ls
total xx - xx is the number of blocks used in this directory, per
default reported in blocks of 512 bytes (unless the environment variable
BLOCKSIZE is set to some other value >=512). If you use "-k", it will
report the number of blocks used in blocks of 1024 bytes (=kilobytes).

I use pppd to access the internet through a 115,200 bps null-modem
arragement, and it works fine: with one exception:
File downloads stop after about 38000 bytes, and never start again.
Even stranger, this ONLY happens when downloading Debian packages from
Debian sites. HTTP, FTP, using apt-get or manually with ftp, tried lots
of mirror sites, it doesn't matter. I get about 38000 bytes, and that's
it. Apt eventually complains about a socket timeout.
I thought it was serial port overruns, and took all the steps to prevent
that (pppd options, irqtune, hdparm, lower speed), but that doesn't make
much sense as downloads work fine on any other file from any other
site. It's only the debian sites I can't download from -- Packages.gz,
.deb files, anything. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

V Communications (http://www.v-com.com) makes various disk utilities,
the most popular of which is probably System Commander. This is a boot
loader, similar to LILO in some ways but with a somewhat different mix
of options. Neither it nor any other V Communications product will let
you switch between OSs without rebooting. In fact, the concept doesn't
really make any sense, because two OSs can't fully share a single
computer, at least not on x86 hardware. The closest thing to what you
describe is an emulator like Win4Lin (http://www.trelos.com) or VMware
(http://www.vmware.com). These let you run one OS within another.
Typically, the emulator sets up a partial or complete simulated
computer, so the OS running in the emulator thinks it's running in a
separate computer, and doesn't have direct access to the real low-level
hardware. This is acceptable for many purposes, but does have
drawbacks. For instance, the emulated OS typically runs more slowly
than it does when running directly on the same computer.

The problem with using TT fonts is that unless you like the 12-point size,
you'll have to resize them each time you start netscape. Nuisance.
The other problem is that you can't have netscape see both a normal and a
bold font in the .ttf subdirectory. Whichever one it finds first is the
only one it will use. And some fonts look really crummy in the size you
want, so expect to do a lot of playing around. I ended up choosing
11-point Arial bold for everything. Gates must know something...

Just search for ttf in windows and you'll find LOTS.
