Yes, it's possible. You may need to change your boot loader
configuration, though. For instance, if LILO is currently installed in
the Linux boot partition and that partition is set as active, with no
other boot loader present, you'll need to move LILO to the MBR, because
the stock MBR won't direct the boot process to a logical partition. (I
think I've heard of people putting LILO in the EXTENDED partition, but
I'm not positive of that.) Alternatively, you could add a third-party
boot loader and leave LILO in the Linux partition's boot sector.
[Actually, you'd probably have to re-install it after converting the
partition.]

For converting the partition, you can either back up, repartition, and
restore, or you can use Partition Magic (http://www.powerquest.com).
IIRC, version 5 was the first to add the ability to convert a primary
partition to a logical partition or vice-versa. Version 6 is the latest.
However you do it, you'll also need to edit your /etc/fstab file so it
shows the correct device filenames. You should have some sort of
emergency floppy ready to do this. If you plan correctly, you can do it
just before shutting down prior to making the changes, so you won't need
to boot the emergency floppy -- but you'll still need some way to boot
first before restoring LILO (say, using your Linux kernel on a DOS
floppy with LOADLIN). It's also wise to have the emergency system in
case you made a mistake in editing /etc/fstab.

They don't need to buy anything. IIRC, almost all Windows machines have
Adboe's Acrobat /Reader/ installed - and if not, the *reader* can be
downloaded for free.

If they want to generate PDF's, surely they could use ghostscript
(which, IIRC, is available for Windows as well (I know it's available
for Mac, so I assume it's there for Win as well)) to convert a ps into a
pdf.

Well, it always depends on who's sending you the stuff: if it's anybody
who values your opinion, that person should be willing to make the stuff
available to you. Personally, I refuse to accept any *.doc *.xls or
whatnot. If the person sending the stuff can not be educated - well,
tough luck. In these rare cases I can read the stuff with some other
application, but anybody I'm in regular contact with knows not to send
me crap like that.

Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 15:30:06 -0000

Hi! There,

I converted .ttf to bdf to pcf to .pcf.gz.
Install OK.

When I use that font under kedit, the visible cursor is off 2 positions to
the right from the invisible real cursor.

If I insert a character or delete a character it will mess around with 2
characters to the left of the visible cursor.

Works great with other fonts. Can any one help me on that?

Where will I find the the meaning of the header portion of .bdf.

Something to do with the header portion?

Well, it's the same on my system.

What does the output of "mount" say? If you see "none" mounted on
/proc, then it can't be a regular file. But it almost certainly isn't one
anyway, so don't worry about it.

Jesus Christ, man, this isn't Windows. Deleting yourself as a user
just to fix an application problem is a bit harsh. Trust me, it is _not_
normal to need to reinstall things - programs, users, OSes - to fix them.
That's brain damage perpetrated on you by Gates and his cronies.

If deleting your home directory and recreating it fixed problems with
Netscape, then try deleting your ~/.netscape directory, hopefully backing up
your bookmarks.htm and address book (pab.na2? I forget.) first.

I have attempted to communicate this problem to the people at Yahoo!, but I

Hello

I try to build a kickstart installation for our company. I put the ks.cfg
(see below) on the boot floppy, which I created from the boot.img image from
the RedHat 6.2 CDROM. Booting works and kickstart seems to find the
configuration file. In the log file on the nfs server I see that the client
can access the exported directory, which contains all the Red Hat source
files.
But then the kickstart displays the following:

"install exited abnormally -- received signal 9"

My configuration file looks as follows:
lang en_us
network --bootproto static --ip 192.168.1.136 --netmask
255.255.255.0 --gatway192.168.1.1 --nameserver 192.168.1.11

part swap --size 128
part / --size 400
mouse none

Has anyone an idea what the problem could be?
Thank you.

OK as far as it goes, but many Excel files I get or send have commas
in the cells, so a .csv file is no good. Making a tab-separated-values
file (.tsv) is usually a lot better.

Perhaps they could get ghostscript, but they have stuff in Microsoft
Word, not .ps, so how do they convert Word .doc files to .ps files so
they can use ghostscript to convert that to .pdf? If they could create
.ps files, they could send them to me like that. But they are
unwilling and mostly unable to convert anything. They assume that
EVERYONE uses WORD and telling them this is not so does not convince
them. They insist my computer is broken.

You are lucky. I have gotten them to tolerate e-mail not in HTML
format, but they wonder why my replies do not have all the fancy
fonts, sizes, and colors that they included originally. If they
included images, they just get something like:

(or something like that) instead of the image we are trying to
discuss. I know I could make this Netscape use HTML just for them, but
it is too much bother.

But some outfits will send data only in .xls format and if I do not
like it, I cannot get it. Luckily, I can usually import it into
Applixware, but not if there is Visual Basic in it.

And some send data only in .doc format. The trouble with those is that
you never know what version it is, and if it was done with the default
"fast save" mode, I cannot import it into Applixware. Of course, some
Microsoft Word versions will not read that crap either. Serves them
right.

No kidding, Netscape 6 is hardly worth installing because it takes
longer to start up than any application that I have ever used on
any platform. Sure it can read HTML and Java, but do i really need the
latest, most advanced Java machine running that starts _16_ java_vm
processes in addition to the 5 processes for Netscape alone?? I don't
remember Netscape Communicator 4.7x being that bad.

KDE is very nice, and when I ran it I hardly ever used Netscape. Kind
of like M$ where it only makes sence to use IE/outlook express and
just apply the security patches every week. For now I use Pine for news
and email, and Netscape for web documents since I like Enlightenment
(can't wait for E17 =)

You could try to adopt the following bash script, it's made for sending files
as attachment, you may look at an email (ALL Headers shown) with an excel
sheet attachet and adjust the script, case it's not working out of the box
for you...

Good luck

# Note: This script does not include any error checking, so

# The correct syntax for using this script is:

Did you ever try to tell the U.S.Government or a local government not
to send it to you? And if you got them to not send it to you, have you
any idea of the consequences of not responding to something they sent?
They have many useful applications that run only on Windows.
Fortunately, most of their stuff is in .pdf, so they are not too much
of a problem.

Where the problems are especially severe is local governments, where
someone took a 6-week long night school class and are now Microsoft
Office experts, so they have their official stuff come out as
Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint documents and you are supposed
to read it. If you do not, you are s.o.l.
