I have added

loadkeys is a useful pgm. For X, look at your XF86Config file. Have a look
inside /usr/lib/kbd and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb branches for all sorts of
keymaps, etc.

Eh? The cardmanager complains about the card? Or the database? You
might want to check which in the source.

Well, isn't that your onboard serial port? I'd disable that in the bios
or try and encourage the driver to choose a different setting! Isn't
it already configured to avoid certain ports and io regions? (see in
/etc/pcmcia/). Add that one to the list!

It may well be a winmodem pcmcia. Ask on some pcmcia list. Or ask David
Hinds directly. He sometimes hangs out here too.

Subject: re-install on top of existing install
Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 23:05:46 GMT
If I re-install overtop of an existing install of RedHat7, how much of
my settings and configuration will I lose?
I want to reinstall as I was advised that was the only way to fix this
problem:
OK, so I had KDE1 from the RH7 CD instaled but decided I wanted to
upgrade to KDE2. So I downloded all the KDE2.1.1 RPM files and tried to
install. I got dependency warnings saying that KDE1 depended on files
that were to be overridden with KDE2 files. So I went, ok , let's
uninstall KDE1. So I did and then installed the KDE2.1.1 RPMs but KDE
will not start from the console. If I run Gnome and then run 'startkde'
from a terminal in Gnome, it starts as an application in Gnome. If I
run "switchdesk KDE2" it says KDE2 is not installed. I tried
uninstalling and re-installing KDE2 RPMs but still no luck. Any help?

Or it might be reading the disk. Or both. My guess is that it happens a
little while after you boot up, and that it's anacron doing some
housekeeping behind the scenes. Amongst other things it rebuilds the
slocate database ('man slocate' for details) and rotates your system logs.

I am planning on putting Linux and and keeping one partions

Would converting my partitions to Logical cause the two new

If so, would parition magic do this?

You may get lucky if your home directory is out of harm's way. I'd plan on
losing everything else. I completely hosed a Mandrake 7.0 distro trying to
upgrade to KDE2. I nursed it back to life, but it wasn't pretty or much fun.
Decided I didn't need 2 all that much. If I ever do want it, I think I'll
just get a distro that comes with it. (Mandrake 8, RH 7.?)

Even an idiot should realize that no one is looking at a page that
isn't displayed. Ergo, pages not displayed may be updated. Which is
what he clearly intended to convey, before you went out of your way to
be obtuse and argumentative. Unless, of course, you really are that
stupid. You seem bent on convincing everyone that you are.

Subject: Kabir's book
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 02:09:52 GMT
Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has read/used Mohammed Kabir's "Red Hat Linux
7 Server", and had this problem:
I have loaded the Linux 7 server that comes with the book. But when I try to
load the XFree86 rpm files in order to install and configure Xwindows, I get
about 3 failed dependencies. I have check all of the incuded CDs and cannot
find the necessary RPMs to complete Xwindows installation. The intro to the
book describes the included version of Linux as "a special 1 cd version". I
always assumed that meant some things would not be included in it. However MOST
of the XFree86 rpms are here and Kabir clearly wants us to be able to install
Xwindows in the book. Either my CDs are a dud or I am doing something wrong.
Can anyone tell me which?
The command(s) I am using, as decribed in the book are simply:
mount (cdrom)
rpm -ivh XFree86*.rpm
the failed dependencies are:
libGL.so.1 is needed by XFree86-4.0.1-1
xinitrc >= 2.9.8 is needed by XFree86-4.0.1-1
Xconfigurator is needed by XFree86-xf86cfg-4.0.1-1

I just installed RH 7.1 two days ago, and I have yet to have a problem with my
Radeon 64 DDR VIVO card. You may want to try to use the XFree86 -configure
command. I was told it is the "correct" way to get a XF86Config file. You may
want to install the xf86cfg rpm on disk two and run that command, in /usr/sbin
I believe.

In all fairness, if you ask the level-1 "techs" at nearly any company about
Linux, they're more than likely not going to have a clue about it.
>The drivers are *not* officially delivered by HP.
Name me a printer manufacturer that includes Linux support software
("driver" is somewhat inaccurate) in the box.

PCL 6 and 5e according to their website. "PostScript" emulation is
mentioned, but that leaves open the question of whether it's
printer-resident or host-based (like Ghostscript). This sounds more like a
case of not doing your homework before making a purchasing decision.
>Better not use Linux and HP Products, if you want avoid troubles;
I've used a DeskJet 682C and a ScanJet 4p under Linux and have never had any
problems setting them up and using them. (I still have the scanner, but I
sold the printer about a year ago and replaced it with a Lexmark Optra Color
40...having PostScript and a huge buffer (I bumped the printer's memory up
to 36 megs) is *nice*.)
FWIW, you mentioned that you traded in an HP for an Epson (or maybe it was
someone else in this thread). The software support for Epson printers may
or may not be OK under Linux, but you couldn't pay me to use an Epson. I've
used printers from nearly every major manufacturer at one time or another,
and Epson inkjet printers have pretty uniformly been complete garbage from a
standpoint of reliability and longevity. Their main weakness is the
print-head assembly, which in most models is permanently installed in the
printer. When the printer isn't in use, the heads aren't always securely
capped. This leads to ink drying in the heads, causing clogs. With most
other printers (HP, Lexmark, Canon, etc.), if the heads are excessively
clogged, you buy a new ink cartridge or a new head assembly and snap it in.
If (more like "when" than "if," really) the heads on an Epson clog up, you
get to either (1) send the printer in for service (hopefully it's still
under warranty) or (2) disassemble the print carriage and try to clean the
heads yourself.
(No, I don't work for HP, Lexmark, or any other company mentioned above. I
just have experience with more than a few of each companies' products, and
use some of them at home.)

Don't give a rat's ass about win98; but I'll tell you partitions in msdos
[& early win?] are assigned in order: 1st primary from each disk; all
logicals from disk0, then from disk1, ... ; remaining primaries from disk0,
then from disk1, ...
So the answer for your question is yes, if both partitions on the
removeable drive are logicals [the 2nd one obviously already is].
Why are you asking a windows question in a linux forum?
