Subject: losetup doesn't recognize anything but XOR and DES?
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 01:47:26 -0400
Hi
I'm trying to get to work my encrypted loop-back filesystem. I'm trying
both on Kernel 2.2.18 and 2.4.1-pre12, with an otherwise standard RedHat 7
installation.
The loopback device works fine, but every time I actually try to do a
losetup -e serpent /dev/mydevice /mycryptfile
losetup complains that it doesn't support encryption "serpent". It doesn't
work with idea, either.
Both Kernels have the crypto patch applied and crypto options configured
either compiled-in or as a module. The modules I load are loop,
cipher-serpent, cipher-idea, and cryptoapi.
What's wrong? Why doesn't losetup support anything but XOR and DES?
(I just downloaded util-linux-2.11f, compiled it and ran losetup - same
result.)
Hints would be appreciated.
Pascal

I've downloaded SDL-1.2.0, and installed it. "./configure ; make ; make
install" it went just fine. The problems arise when I try to install
programs that need SDL. For example xmps. When I run xmps' configure
script, it says:
checking for sdl-config... /usr/local/bin/sdl-config
checking for SDL - version >= 1.2.0... no
*** Could not run SDL test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means SDL was incorrectly installed
*** or that you have moved SDL since it was installed. In the latter case, you
*** may want to edit the sdl-config script: /usr/local/bin/sdl-config
configure: error: *** SDL version 1.2.0 not found!
What's wrong? I think I also had this problem some time ago, and I think
I've run into similiar problems with glib and gtk+. I didn't install SDL
with a prefix..

I had similar problem (a number of people are getting it as well). I
almost given up & wanting to try Mandrake 8.0 instead.
However I discovered the workaround by chance.
What I did was to boot up using cdrom.
At the the boot prompt entered the following to perform a text-based
install.
boot: linux text hdd=cdrom
After that just go through with text mode install.
It'll fail a couple of times stating "not enough space" & throw you back
to the X server video card detection. Just press OK & it'll copy the files
across.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the pointers, I guess I asked my question wrong. I am looking for

this is now in glibc but I haven't found any details with respect to versions,

All I want is a precompiled Glibc 2.2.x for my RedHat 6.2 installation s=

I can install KDE 2.1.
But all I can find are downloadable source tars. I don't want to have t=

And why is GNU's Glibc FTP site passworded???

The later versions of SDL install themselves into /usr/lib/ instead of
/usr/local/lib , where previous versions installed themselves. If you
have the Makefile for your older version of SDL hanging around, run it
with target "uninstall" and things should be fine. Otherwise, rm -rf
/usr/local/lib/*SDL* /usr/local/bin/sdl-config /usr/local/include/SDL .
The problem that you're having is because /usr/local/bin/ is in your
$PATH before /usr/bin/ , which is usually a good thing but can cause
annoyances like this.
Welcome to the Linux version of DLL Hell ;-)

Subject: Selecting screen resolution with GDM / changing res NICELY in GNOME
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 09:33:06 +0800
Does anyone know how I can set up GDM to change the screen resolution of
my GNOME session? What I'd like is a menu of sessions that lists
"GNOME" and "GNOME Big screen", so we can pick before we log in.
Now, I DON'T mean all that simple basic stuff about changing video modes
in XFree86 using CTRL ALT + and CTRL ALT -. I know all that. The
problem is, if I change resolutions once GNOME has started the GNOME
panel and windows won't automatically resize, plus this tedious virtual
window is left around. All this is OK for me but I need to set this up
so high school kids can use it, and it should work easily and nicely.
That means no windows or panels left hanging off the screen, and no
virtual window causing things to disappear every time a kid moves the
mouse too far to the left. It also means not using 1024x768 as a default
(because most of them complain it makes the letters too small on our 15"
screens).
In the past we didn't use GDM and solved this problem by having different
versions of startx, which picked different XF86Config files to get the
desired res. I've tried similar things with GDM but get hung up trying
to restart X in the right mode.
Ideas, please? I have also thought of fixing it at 1024x768 by default
and increasing the font sizes, but I'd like to leave that as a last
resort.

I put a line
DHCP_HOSTNAME="cl23456-a"
in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifconfig_eth0
and it worked.
I would not work without this line.

Installing glibc-2.2.x will, if you succeed, break just about every binary
on your system making it completely unusable.
Install RedHat-7.1 and you will be much happier.

I hate like the dickens to agree with the good Dr. Breuer, but
I have to say that it sounds like maybe a hardware problem.
Double-check the termination of the SCSI chain, especially
make sure there is only one termination on the drive end
(if there's only one drive, make sure it's terminated; if
more than one, make sure that only the last drive on the
end of the cable is terminated).
Let me ask the Stupid Question. You did include support for
your particular SCSI adapter in your kernel, right?
Can you elaborate on "Parition Magic crashes"? Does it just
dump core ungracefully, or does it give any error messages
when it departs? For that matter, if you can lay your hands on
a DOS / Win9x boot disk, can you partition the disk with
that? Although not ideal for Linux use, this at least will
give some indication whether the hardware is indeed crappy.
Some more verbose error messages might help diagnosis.
And, as Dr. Breuer said, what does /var/log/dmesg show?
This would be an indication whether the drive is found at
boot time by the kernel and what geometry the kernel thinks
the drive has.

With *.src.rpm files, you may also be able to specify a particular "target"
such as i686, PPC etc. This is handy if you want to compile your source to
be optimised for your architecture.
So if you have a Celeron, P2/3/4 or AMD Duron/Athlon, you could try:
#rpm --rebuild --target=i686 name_of_package.src.rpm
Whether or not you get any significant performance boost is questionable as
most libraries are compiled against 386's :-/ But if you're going to go to
the trouble of compiling.....
The other thing to be aware of is that not all source RPM's allow for every
possible build target. Some may only allow i386/alpha/ppc and others will
let you use i586 and i686 etc. Just try them out - no harm done if it craps
out part way through the compile.
Cheers,
James

font.
Here is how I am changing the font size
1) goto drop down menu "Edit"
2) choose "Preference"
3) When a window pops up, goto "Appearance" then change the font.
For some reason, the font is not evenly changed. Some texts appear big
and some are unchanged. I am having very difficult time reading it.
If there are other ways of changing the font size, please let me know.

Most likely on your CD. If you have X running there should be something
to install RPM packages. Otherwise read 'man rpm' about how to install.
