Actually, Samba supports encrypted passwords. You'll need to specify
"encrypted passwords = yes" in smb.conf, and then create an smbpasswd
file. Read ENCRYPTION.txt in the docs directory of the Samba distribution
(the downloadable tarball from samba.anu.edu.au). 

The smbpasswd file is a special format and can be generated by using the
mksmbpasswd.sh script that comes with the distribution of Samba. Once that
file has been generated, you can use smbpasswd to change your password.
