Since you sent this to me personally, I assume I must have sent you some
message previously. But I can't find it, so I'm not sure of the context for
your question. So please forgive me if I repeat myself. (I'm also copying
this reply to linux-newbie, since someone else might have an insight that
I'm missing).

If minicom can't find configuration information, I'm pretty sure it will try
to open /dev/modem . This is usually a symlink to the /dev/ entry that
identifies the port where your modem is located. So ...

1. What does /dev/modem point to ("ls -l /dev/modem")?

2. COM4 (or, in Linux terminology, /dev/ttyS3) is an unusual port for a
modem. Is it internel or external? If internal, do you *know* that it is not
a "winmodem," that peculiar sort of limited-function modem that can only
work with Windows? If you don't *know* one way or the other, you should check.

3. What are the listings of /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports?

4. What does setserial say about the modem port ("setserial /dev/ttyS3")?
