First, let's cover the basics. You are getting only 16 colors because that
is all the XF86_VGA16 server will support. XF86_SVGA will support 256
colors. THe "accelerated" servers -- there is one for S3Virge -- can support
even more (as well as finer resolutions), depending on the card (mainly its
memory).

You don't say which of the X setup tools you are using, so that makes it a
bit difficult to help with specifics. When people are having trouble with X
setup, I usually encourage them to use xf86config, the simplest and most
demanding of the setup tools, but also the most informative.

Assuming you've tried unsuccessfully to use the SVGA and S3Virge servers,
you probably failed for one of these reasons:

        1. You specified a monitor vertical sync that was too low to support
                any available resolution.
        2. You specified a monitor horizontal syncd that was too low to
                support any available monitor resolution.
        3. You specified too little video memory as available on your card
(in your case, this last one is unlikely, since you know
you have 4 megs and that's plenty for typical resolutions).

So I suggest you try again using xf86congif, specifying the right numbers
for the 3 things above (consult your monitor docs for items 1 & 2) and
trying both SVGA and S3Virge-accelerated servers. If they fail, post again
with details (probably the details for SVGA are best).

BTW, the only way I know of to make the icons "smaller" is to use a finer
screen resolution. At 1024*768, I find them sufficiently non-intrusive for
my needs.
