4-bit color is exactly what the VGA16 server does (4bits being 16 colors).
That's whay it's called VGA-16.
As for the SVGA Server not working, that should be expected. The SVGA
server doesn't support his card, plain and simple.
The documentation for the SVGA server documentation states that "unlisted
cards are not supported". If his card is not listed, it isn't supported.
The VGA16 server is the only Server that supports "damn-near" any card.
The SVGA Server only supports certain cards. 3DLabs Permedia cards are
another example:
The VGA server supports them in "universal" 320x200 at 16 colors.
The SVGA Server barfs.
The (new) 3DLabs server works flawlessly.
Catrin's problem is that:
The SVGA server doesn't support his card.
The VGA16 server can only do 320x200x16, but supports (almost)
all cards. So it can be used, but it kind-of sucks.
He needs to find a Server that supports his card. Probably the
S3Verge server, which has worked, but only a 8-bit color.
I Say this again: The SVGA server is NOT universal. It only supports
specific cards (though it supports cards form many different manufacturers).
If the card is not supported by the SVGA server, the server will barf.
That is exactly what's happening.
I suspect that either Catrin has a "cutting-edge" chipset, or
his configuration is incorrect.
Catrin - post you XFConfig file. Also, post your chipset.
I am not an expert with S3(V) cards, but there are probably many
people on this list using that server.
