I've been having the same trouble with an S3 ViRGE card from Gateway. I've
tried different servers including the accelerated S3V server, but I only get
8bit color as well. I discovered that all my resolutions with more than
8-bit color get thrown out by the X server.

This is confusing, because in NT, I have used resolutions with 24-bit color.

I used the xf86config utility. And I did verify the vertical and horizontal
frequencies from the monitor's manual. So I'm at a loss as to why X throws
out the screen resolutions I'm interested in using.

Perhaps something similar is occurring to Catrin.
