Just to be clear, Catrin is reporting a much more severe problem than the
one you describe. You say you get 8-bit color ( = 256 colors, presumably
using the SVGA server), while Catrin reports being limited to 16 colors ( =
4 bits, using the VGA16 server). Whatever the problems with the S3Virge
accelerated server, the first thing to figure out is why SVGA isn't working
at *any* resolution and color depth ... then, perhaps, why the accelerated
S3Virge server isn't working in 8-bit color ... then, perhaps, how to get
24-bit color.

The first problem is very likely to be a sync-rate mismatch -- if not, a
copy of the XT86config file, plus the output from startx, will likely be
enough to identify the cause. The other failures are harder to guess about
and could be problems with the specific card.
