hehe nice..why don't u try to set it up from /etc/inittab??

ok ..take a look in your /etc/inittab to see if ttyS2 it's not
already assignet or locked.

well try to compile your kernel  :)  with pppd networking support

try this first...i hope it will workk...
ahh. btw ..what kind of modem do u habe?? internal or external??
if it's internal u may have some irq conflicts...for example on my
computer i have two modems..a catv modem and another one internal.
the last one work properly only on 2e8 irq5.
anyway try frist to open it's port using minicom ..try some nit string and
than ata.
