Because it has nothing to do with runlevels. I've never heard of anyone
inserting local configuration settings in /etc/inittab before. I presumed
that was what the purpose of /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

There is absolutely nothing that has to do with anything other than runlevels
in /etc/inittab. What dist are you running?

Man, I've been compiling kernels all month. Each compile has ppp support
built in, (nearly always straight in, but I've also tried the module route
sans success).

It's an internal USR 56k Sportster.

Possibly. I just don't understand why it works perfectly with my 2.0.36
kernel, but when I boot my 2.1.12x kernel, there's nada.

Good idea. I'll have to give minicom a go, but it's still annoying that it
reports that I have no ppp support in the kernel when I know I do.

Thanks for the reply,
