Gotcha.  But no, there's nothing like that in /etc/inittab.  If it were there,
it would give me the 'device or resource busy' message regardless of kernel
version wouldn't it?

Really?  That's weird.  I do have shadow-passwd installed, but I'm running
5.1.  I might ditch it and see if that does anything.  Thanks for the advise.
