...arrrgh, SURE - this is a typo - you are right, of course it is 0x378.

Ah, anything claims 0x378. This has to be changed - and can be changed:

At least for the first time - we still don't know if your drive is
supported at all:

- no printer plugged into the parallel port
- no lp module (rmmod lp)
- no plip module (rmmod plip)
(these things can be solved at a later time)

Just for making sure:

You use the first parallel port, don't you.

What can you see after typing in

        cat /proc/ioports

and 

        cat /proc/interrupts

and

        lsmod

(please whole output - and please twice:
one time before trying to load the ftape stuff,
one time right after trying to load the ftape stuff)

what's the result of

insmod -V

(note the capital letter)

for example version 2.1.85? This would be good, 2.0.0 would be bad.

(but to be honest - your problems are different, I suppose)
